What's a great LCD monitor for FS9?

Featured Replies

I hope that XBRIGHT displays, or equivalent, will be capable of 1600x1200 at 12ms or less, with pixel pitches that are finer than today's offering. Just a case of unified capability, where all elements that come together to deliver the finished product are fully matched in density, and that at as high a level as possible. I think I am blessed by this beheamoth. It will most likely be my last CRT with any luck, though because those specs are getting closer every day. But, again, it is a true honey.

Yeah I have a 213T as well. It really is a beautiful screen.I've found many other LCD's to have a "washed out" apperance to them whereas the 213T has very vivid warm colours. FS9 looks stunning on it!

That Samsung 213T also looks amazing. The response time is quite slow, but you folks are real happy with it for FS9 it seems.Shows that science is NOT everything. Appearances do count!JS

>17-incher. The vendors are darn near giving away CRT monitors>now, for good reason... no one much wants them anymore.>Why would we not wan't a CRT? My impression after looking at a TFT flat screen is that there are only two advantages with TFT1) They are smaller and occupy less space2) They consume less powerBut when it comes to picture quality i see no significant difference and then I'm also thinking about textreading. Then there is disadvantages with TFT for example dead pixels. Also still I find them more expensive.I admit that I havn't compared them side by side. I know have a six year old 17" CRT. I have been considering replacing it. Would a new 19" or 21" crt be a bad choice?

"I admit that I havn't compared them side by side. I know have a six year old 17" CRT. I have been considering replacing it. Would a new 19" or 21" crt be a bad choice?"This gets beyond the rational studying of spec sheets. It is an unenjoyable task for me to have to go do some work on my wife's 17" CRT these days. I have had my 19" LCD since late October or early November... not sure... I have 2 disused 17" CRTs here on the floor beside me. I will not go back. I have been using CRTs since my 1st Apple2 back in '80... no more.Got to a computer store where you can use them side by side. If you still prefer CRTs then you should stick with them. Bet you don't. ;)

>Watching the hairs stand up on the back of your hand is PROOF>of my warning. This dosen't happen with LCD.>>I rest my case. Dave,The phenomenom you describe is caused by static electricity generated by the EHT voltage feeding the CRT, not gamma radiation.Gary

And yet I work with a brand new 17" LCD at work, and my home CRT is clearly superior in almost every way. Plus, image quality does not deteriorate when looking from the side or above. LCDs are not without their downside, and TOP END CRTs can be quite amazing (versus lower end CRTs and LCDs).

JS, def go look at the Sony 19" SDM-HS94P/B. Best Buy stocks them right now at $599. They do have amazing IQ, though again the pixel pitch could be smaller. 12ms response time. My brother is still amazed 1 month after purchasing.

I haveNo of course you won't go back to 17" CRT from 19" LCD. But a 19"LCD should be compared to a 21" CRT. The price is in the same rangeand a LCD corresponds to +2" CRT as far as I have heard.>Got to a computer store where you can use them side by side. That can be a little difficult. Where I live the stores don't usually have several monitors on side by side.

Noel:Looks very stylish! But....native res is 1024x1024 and I think I would like to stick with an LCD that has a native 1600x1200 res that I've used on my CRT for 2+ years now. Thanks for post!JS

According to Tom's Hardware, until very recently manufacturers have had problems in producing larger screen LCDs (> 17 in) with fast response times. However, it also seems that you can't always take at face value the specs quoted by manufacturers: eg response times will vary greatly from colour to colour and shade to shade. What is quoted is some overall number that may or may not have any relationship to what the user sees on the screen.Bruceb

The price is in the same rangeand a LCD corresponds to +2" CRT as far as I have heard."I went back through some old e-mails and figured out that I actually purchased my LCD much earlier than I realized. Septerber 27th to be exact. I found that interesting for 2 reasons. For one thing it was just over a week after AVSIM Conference. I knew the conference had influenced my decision but didn't remember it being that immediate. For another it is my wife's birthday. So kind of me to buy myself a new monitor on her birthday. :-shyI found this statement in an e-mail sent that day:"When I was looking at monitors the guy tried to steer me to a ViewSonic flat screen CRT... a 19" one (18" viewable) for $199.00. It did get my attention for a minute if only because I can remember when a 19" regular CRT was a thousand and more like fourteen hundred for a flat screen one. How times change. Of course I can remember when our standard 17" CRTs were like $699... *heck* I paid $499 for Rhonda's less than 2 years ago. Now they will practically give them away. It is hard to go into any of the big electronics/computer places these days without seeing a stack of them on sale for $49.95. I've also seen a lot of deals where they throw them in with other stuff as a freebee."The "*"s denote a minor edit for the sake of forum decorum. :) My point is that I remember that 19" CRT and that it was way too big to fit into the space I have available. It was also far to heavy for me to lift with my doctor's approval. And that was only a 19 inch one.Your response to my suggestion to look at LCDs & CRTs side by side went like this:"That can be a little difficult. Where I live the stores don't usually have several monitors on side by side."I have no idea where you live but most consumer electronics stores have such capability... and most computer component stores as well. But if you have no such capability then I guess you will have to rely on research. That is unfortunate because research alone will not tell you the full story on this issue. :(I have no desire to argue any of this with you. There would be no point anyway. A major part of such a decision is personal likes & dislikes... personal choice. I hope that whatever you decide to purchase for your own use is something that you will like and enjoy for a long time to come. :)I'll close with a screenshot from that September e-mail:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/105231.jpgThe caption below it reads: "I'm getting the hang of this new monitor a little bit at a time. I found that it helps if I set mail text to maximum viewing size. That way I can see it with these tired old eyes. :)" It took me a while to get used to using Windows in 1280X1024. I was used to 800X600 and occasionally 1024X768 so the transition was a bit bumpy for me. I guess you guys seem to be used to using higher resolutions so you should not have that problem. I can't imagine Windows Solitare on a 1600X1200 screen... it is tiny enough on 1280X1024. :-lolAgain... all my best wishes on finding a monitor that suits your needs and your likes. http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/105233.gif
