May 30, 200917 yr I don't think it will matter. I just checked both my original install and my update 1 install folders and the files are identical. Regardless, you will have a backup folder of your fonts and you'll still have the renamed copy of the fs9gps.cab cabinate file. I think that we're good to go if you do that because we can always revert back. Also, you might want to check, (but don't overwrtie them just yet), that the other fonts in your "Flight Simulator 9\Font" folder are in the Windows Font folder too. Just check for now.Mark
May 30, 200917 yr Author Mark,I did first verify .. They are in the windows\fonts folder and FS9's font folder. Then:I did copy the fonts off the FS9.0 disk ... they were dated 2001 and 2002 ... they unpacked and copied ok to FS9 fonts folder.I started FS9 ... same problem with Italics on GPS.I did not copy the old fs9 fonts (disk 1) to the master Windows Font folder ... That is all I have done ... to this point. Best Regards, Vaughan Martell PP-ASEL KDTW
May 30, 200917 yr I found Arial and Courier fonts in a Windows XP folder.I copied them to FS9 fonts folder.See Screenshot of my FS9 Fonts folder now.Same Italics problem.I think FS9 is telling Windows to use Italics font for Garmin 500cannot or Windows cannot find the font correct font, so Windows defaults to Italics.Maybe someone could check their:C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Fonts folder and see what exact file (name) I need?Anyone know how FS9 tells Windows which font to use in the Garmin 500?Like, is it a statement in a gauge or something like that? You know, I just noticed that there is an arial.ttf font file in your screen shot. Did you put that font file in there? Hummm...MarkMark,I did first verify .. May 30, 200917 yr Author Mark,In one of the first posts, Fr.Bill said to try the Arial and Courier fonts .. it did not work, so they were removed.I did the disk 2 stuff .. no luck, ... still have Italics on the Garmin 500 ... ! Best Regards, Vaughan Martell PP-ASEL KDTW
May 30, 200917 yr One more thing to try before we start copying fonts to the Windows\Font folder. Check and see if there is a font named "Arial Black". The file should be named "ariblk.TTF" and my file date and time is 8/4/2004 10pm and the file size is 115k.
May 30, 200917 yr Author Mark,Yes, it is in the windows font folder ARIBLK.TTF 117K created 2004, modified 1-1-2007.. I copied to FS9 font folder ... no help .. still have Italics... Best Regards, Vaughan Martell PP-ASEL KDTW
May 30, 200917 yr So let's recap, 1) We've got the original fs9gps.cab file, (copied from disk 2), in the "Flight Simulator 9\Gauges" folder. and the current fs9gps.cab file renamed to fs9gps.cab.xxx2) We've got the original true type fonts, (copied from disk 1) in the "Flight Simulator 9\Fonts" folderarialnb.ttfarialnbi.ttfglassga.ttfmaian.ttfmaiandb.ttfmsgothic.ttcnwgthc.ttfquartz.ttf3) All of the original true type fonts are also in the "Windows\Font" folderIs the above correct, and also, which aircraft are you flying and have you tried any other of the default aircraft yet?
May 30, 200917 yr Author Mark,Your recap is correct ... execpt I now also have the ARIBLK.ttf in the FS9 fonts folder.I have loaded several default fs9 aircraft ... even ones I have never flown ... all FS9 default Garmin 500 have Italics. If you have another idea I will have to test it tomorrow morning .. it has been a long day.Your help is very much appreciated. Best Regards, Vaughan Martell PP-ASEL KDTW
May 30, 200917 yr So the next thing that we do is move the ARIBLK.TTF out of the Windows\Font folder along with the other fonts from disk 1. Put them somewhere safe. Reboot your PC and then re-install the fonts. That would be the next move. After that we use the default Cessna 172 but before we do, we re-install that manually from the original Flight Simulator 9 disks.Anything beyond that I will be researching...Have a good evening, it's only 11:39 am here in Sydney :)Mark
May 30, 200917 yr Hi.It would seem hat you have some new fonts, and missing the Garmin? Here is what my Directory has:C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Fonts TV
May 30, 200917 yr Author Mark,You said:"So the next thing that we do is move the ARIBLK.TTF out of the Windows\Font folder along with the other fonts from disk 1. Put them somewhere safe. Reboot your PC and then re-install the fonts. That would be the next move."Yes, I can move ARIBLK.TTF from Windows\Font folder to a safe place. But, along with the other fonts from disk 1? I did not undestand. The fonts from disk 1 went to the FS9 fonts folder ... they did not go to Windows\Fonts folder.Did you mean cpy the fonts from FS9\Fonts to a safe place?"After that we use the default Cessna 172" ... OK" but before we do, we re-install that manually from the original Flight Simulator 9 disks." ... I have never reinstalled an aircraft from the FS9 disks before.... And, all aircraft use the Garmin not just the Cessna 172 ... so I am a little not understanding this part? Best Regards, Vaughan Martell PP-ASEL KDTW
May 30, 200917 yr Author Hi.It would seem hat you have some new fonts, and missing the Garmin? Here is what my Directory has:C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Fonts TVAvcomware,Yes, I see you have four Garmin fonts in your FS9 Fonts TV folder .... And, that may be my problem. How four fonts gone missing from my FS9\Fonts folder is a mystery! If you copy the Garmin fonts out of the FS9\Fonts folder (copy them to a safe place) will FS9 start without an error? And, what does the Garmin look like ... possibly Italics like my problem? It seems I need to find these ... are they on the FS9 installation disks? Best Regards, Vaughan Martell PP-ASEL KDTW

May 30, 200917 yr Opa,What Font "names" are you saying are on disk 1.Earlier post lead me to some but not the one that fixed the problem. All the fonts which FS2004 uses are on disk1 - in the the cab file named MSGAME1.cab.They have ttf or ttc as the file extension. There should be eight of them - seven with ttf and one with ttc.arialnb.ttfarialnbi.ttfglassga.ttfmaian.ttfmaiandb.ttfmsgothic.ttcnwgthc.ttfquartz.ttfThey go in your Flight Simulator 9\Fonts folder.I have no idea if restoring them will correct your issue but it might be worth a try.Good luck!!
