May 30, 200917 yr Opa,Yes, previously I was instructed to get thoes .. which I did but same problem.See, a few posts (replies) earlier here, see screenshot, there are four .ttf fonts with the name "Garmin".Do you have those in your FS9 fonts folder?Nope - just the ones I listed.I also checked my entire FS2004 setup and find no fonts anywhere with Garmin as a part of the name.Under Windows/Fonts ther are twp with the name Garmond but that is NOT the same thing.A friend of mine had a somewhat similar problem last year with some of the gauges in the default Extra300 panel - they did not display any font. We never did find out how to correct it (I could not dulplicate the problem) and no one in the various forums could help either. We restored the original fonts and associated gauges to no avail - so finally chalked it up to a "glitch" in the operating system (XP) and moved on.Good luck!
May 30, 200917 yr Hi vonmar, and everyone. You should be able to find the fonts, except the Garmin?, on CD1 under\MSGAME1.CAB. See pic. Below.Just 2xLeftClick the " MSGAME1.cab" file and you should see / access the contents, assuming you have XP or Vista OS?My guess is that he Garmin were installed with the GPS as a Gauge? Can someone else verify that you also have the Garmin Fonts? Maybe that I've got them from another installation? TV
May 30, 200917 yr Author Avcomware,Yes, thank you.I had previously copied the 8 fonst from FS9 disk 1 without a problen. But, I still have Italic fonts displayed on the default FS9 Garmin 500. Best Regards, Vaughan Martell PP-ASEL KDTW
May 30, 200917 yr Commercial Member I took the time to parse the default Garmin's XML code. It uses the font 'Arial Black'. Arial Black is contained in the ariblk.ttf. This file shows a creation date of Thursday, November 02, 2006, 2:27:22 AM and has a size of 119,492 bytes. This font should be located in the Windows/Fonts folder. Now, I'm using Windows Vista... but I don't think the actual font file's changed between versions. Ed Wilson Mindstar AviationMy Playland - I69
May 30, 200917 yr Moderator Those "Garmin" fonts are a red herring. They belong to another gauge that was installed. The default GNS500 has only these fonts specified:Arial BlackArial BoldArialMore to the point however, the word Italic appears nowhere in the XML script......the mystery continues... May 30, 200917 yr Something else you might try - a really long "long shot" but I have seen stranger things ----Double check all of your default font settings in such programs as Notepad and your e-mail client etc.Is one of them set to italics perhaps?Strange as it may seem, some functions of FS2004 are "tied" to other MS applications. As an example, some printing functions in FS2004 will not work unless you are using IE as your browser - they will not work if you use Mozilla or Opera. As I said - a really long shot - but there just might be a correlation.Godd luck!
May 30, 200917 yr Hi.This is getting interesting.Try to find your "ariblk.ttf", should be in the Windows folder. Display it, 2xLeftClick on it and see what it look like. See pic below of mine, and the GPS looks like. It's the Font used. TV
May 30, 200917 yr Author Opa and Avcomware,On a pervious response I did a test with Notepad. The fonts are ok.However, i got looking at all the fonts by double clicking on them. They all looked good.** Including ARIBLKNow I went back and looked at them with a fonts program program.I checked each Arial font. And I noticed a difference. In the viewer all fonts had normal vertical charcters just like it should be ... except Arial Black! When I look at Arial Black in the font viewer it displays Italic.Well, I went back to Notepad and displayed several different fonts. There is a little selection box where you pick the type of font and size you want. The list box listed the types in this order:1. Regular2. Italic3. Bold4. Bold ItalicWell guess what, when I looked a Arial Black the order is:1. Italic2. Bold3. Bold Italic4. RegularAnd it "appears" FS9 is picking #1 ... Italic. So, could you go to Notepad and check the "order" the Arial Black font is in on your PC?If I knew where to get a replacement Arial Black font it would also be a quick test!!!! May 30, 200917 yr Author I just took a screenshot of what I seen: Best Regards, Vaughan Martell PP-ASEL KDTW
May 30, 200917 yr Vaughan buddy!I can see we're still at the same place that we were yesterday when you had to go...Now, do you remember when I suggested to you that we do a quick re-install of FS9 because we could possible isolate the issue to being either a Windows issue or a FS9 issue? Takes about a half hour. How many hours have we spent on this topic so far now :)You know, sometimes a by-product of doing a switch-eroo install can fix settings within windows that we normally might not come across in our day to day simming. It's really easy to hose FS9...there are so many things going on at the same time...from questionable textures to draconian DRM techniques. One thing that I've learned over the years is to always have a clean install of FS9 in a separate folder somewhere. That way I can research what the original configuration looks like.So I might suggest to you that we act like we're doing a new install of FS9 by renaming the current flight simulator folder to a temporary name. Something like "Flight Simulator 9 Original". Then simply repeat the original installation of the sim. By that I mean, run the install from the original disks and choose the same folder and location as you did when you first installed FS9.If your original install was to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9" the that's where you should choose to reinstall the program. You'd also have to run the UPDATE 1 service pack to mimic your current installation. There would only be one more backup that we'd have to do before the install takes place. There is a folder where FS9 keeps a number of your personal settings based on your User Name. The folder is "C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9". You should MOVE, NOT COPY this folder somewhere safe so when we do the fresh install it doesn't get over written. Not that I really think it matters much but I like to be a thorough as possible. So these are the steps that you could take...1) Move the "C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9" folder to a safe location and makes sure it's identified that it is the original FS9 folder.2) Rename your current Flight Simulator folder to "Flight Simulator 9 Original"3) Re-install Flight Simulator to the same location as you had used originally. 4) Run the UPDATE1 service pack5) Take a flight and post the resultsAt this point you should now have 2 FS9 installations and can simply rename either folder to "Flight Simulator 9" to make it the active sim! If the new install doesn't have any issues and the font appears correctly in Garmin 500 then do the renaming option again. Rename the new installation folder to "Flight Simulator 9 New" and the original installation folder back to "Flight Simulator 9" and take another flight. You'll be flying with the old sim now, (with the new personal settings), and you can see if it still has italic fonts in the Garmin 500 and we can proceed from there with a bit more confidence anyway. Give it a whirl, I don't believe it will hurt anything.Mark
May 31, 200917 yr One more thing I'd like to add is if there is anyone out there in the world who might have any different advice or see any caveats to doing this type of an operation. Add your advice if you'd like...it would be appreciated I'm sure!Mark
May 31, 200917 yr Author Mark,Thanks for the information.I made a copy of the instructions.Naturally, I have not attempted it yet ... we will see!Note:When I was in the US Navy we stopped in Hobart.Great place! The girls were like 3 girls for every guy!!!One great gal took me home for a wonderful home cooked meal.Everyone is super friendly in you corner of the world. After I win the lottery I'm on my way back for a visit.
