What are we Recommending in a Defragger These Days?

There are so many free defraggers out there...I was just wondering if anyone has a particular favorite, (Payware or Freeware), and what are the reasons for the favoritism :)Please advise and thanks!Mark

O&O Defrag. It's relatively fast and has five different defrag modes that arrange your data differently. Not Freeware.http://www.oo-software.com/home/en/product...frag/index.html

Ive been a Diskeeper user for a long time now, currently running Diskeeper09. I like it because its not failed me a single time- defrags thoroughly, runs very well on the automatic real time mode, defrags system files and also said to defrag under less than 15% free space, I dont let my free space drop below that anyway:)

I use Smart Defrag by Iobit. Freeware and works just as good as the payware program I was using. Has an optimizer that will consolidate most used programs. Go to Iobit.com for more info.-Greg

I would second that.I use the I-Obit as well. There advanced system care thingy now comes with the Game booster as well.(another program for shutting down system services prior to sim time)I am not sure how much better it performs than others of this type, but very friendly to use.As to defraggers I have used many, many and some more to boot(all freeware)and windows own as well. The only thing I can say about all these optimisers, defraggers and boosters is that they all seem to do there stuff(whatever that is)and when done I never notice any increase in performance or anything else for that matter .I still defrag though because the bible says....and it came to pass that the prophets , wise men and the elders with beards said LO! on the seventh day thou will defrag or get a cactus shoved up your.......Andy

Surprised noone's mentioned Perfect Disk. Very good program. Fast defrags as well. Also allows boot time defrag and defrag of system's files. Very professional guys.

This is what I have come up with after a lot of research on the topic...seems to work good but who knows...O&O is the best defrag program for the hard drive...and the first defrag ran should be SPACE, than Sort/NAME after that.PerfectDisk seems the be the best offline defrag, for pagefiles and MTF, etc...Apparently, ideally you should run both

I should add, Ultimate Defrag was pretty cool. My friend uses it and loves it. It allows for custom physical placement of files on the HD. Where "High performance" things such as Flight Simulator, can be placed on the outer HD tracks. This use of physics for file placement supposedly makes for better performance. Nifty.

I am very happy with jkdefrag http://www.kessels.com/Jkdefrag/ It is simple to use but still have many option to suit your needs (see on their webpage). I myself use the sort by name option (-a 7) each time I modify my FS installation: it is the option that give me the best result in reducing FS loading times (but I haven't tried all). And it is free ! The only impact of defragmentation on FS I noticed is reducing loading time thus I don't feel it is worth paying a sofware to do that when a freeware does the job efficientlycheersJulien

Forgive my incompetence- once or twice a year when I get bored, I check with Defrag in Win XP to see if it's time to run it. It has always indicated "Defragging not necessary". But I do it anyway just for the heck of it.I have no problems with my nearly 6 year old AMD XP2200. Totally reliable and smooth running with triple monitors. So the question is - Why defrag? Am I wasting my time? It seems to accomplish nothing. Alex Reid

It depends on how much you install/remove programs or save/delete files on your system. If you don't do that much, then you won't have to defrag much. Which is probably the situation in your case.I doubt any of these 3rd party de-fraggers really give you that much of a performance boost over the WinXP/Vista default de-fragger. There isn't a terrible amount of rocket science to it. They just grab clusters of a program and make sure they are physically located beside each other on the disk. It may save a second or two if the program is located on the outer edge of the platter but as I understand it, both the default WinXP and Vista de-fraggers do the 'frequently used program' re-location as well.Jason
