Concerned about Core i7

Featured Replies

I thinking about taking the plunge and upgrading to the Core i7 club. However I'm slightly nervous as there seems to be some mixed results posted here. It seems that performance in FSX does improve with i7 but that stutters can become a problem.Currently I'm running a Q9650 clocked to 3.6ghz (my Asus P5E X38 board doesn't want to go any faster!) and a GTX 285 and i seem to get reasonable frames (thanks to Nick N!). For example during the PMDG J41 tutorial flight I'm running between 30-45FPS (no stutters), that's with UTX and GEX. Would a clocked 4ghz i7 920 give me a significant improvement over this or just induce a stuttering headache and more hours of tweaking?

Hi,will do the same Tutorial with my i7 950 and let you know the FPS. Although FPS means not so much but it is an indicator. Have also GEX and UTX.Regards

If you're getting smooth perf at 35 fps on your current machine, I'm puzzled as to why you'd want to upgrade. If you bought an i7 and got it up to 60 fps, would that justify spending hundreds of dollars?RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO

Thanks Bob, sounds like you're getting great performance! I guess I like tinkering with my system, its been a little while since I did an upgrade so it would give me a project to work on.Although I'm getting smooth perf at 35fps I'm not running any AI traffic so I'd really hope that the extra punch of an i7 would allow me to fill my virtual skies.

I think that everyone who loves FSX wants 30 fps and smooth flight. 30 fps and smooth flight with very dense settings, AI, PMDG, etc. and even traffic at 25 % is attainable in NYC with the right hardware. I use 30, but 40 fps is what I'm striving for.I'm almost there. Using Maximum PC Dream Machine 2009, I'm well on my way. I'm going to add 6 gigs of RAM and an SSD drive, that should put me over the top.Don't worry about stutters that issue is easily resolved with the right drivers and a bufferpool setting.

--------------------------------------------------------------I agree! For those running Pent 4 systems or anything close in peerage...the gain is total. If I was getting smooth 35 FPS perf...I sure wouldn't be in a hurry to 'upgrade'.
