Does FS9 benefit from quad core or dual core

Featured Replies

Hi,maybe this is a dumb question, but I'm thinking about replacing Pentium IV 3.6 GHz CPU with a faster one. This will then be a dual-core type or quad-core-type. (I know...... I will have to replace the motherboard as well)As I understand not all programmes (software) will be affected by such a change as they aren't programmed to que up tasks with multi-core-technology.What about FS9 ? If I replace the single 3.6 GHz CPU with lets say a Core 2 duo 3.33 GHz - which should result in about 6 GHz processor speed; will I get a FS9 performance in accordance with this upgrade ?Carl

FS9 does not benefit from more cores, but it certainly would benefit from the upgrade from an ancient P4 to the much more efficient architecture of a Core2. You would see massive performance improvements from such a move. Also, CPU speed isn't additive nor multiplicative. The clock speed is the clock speed regardless of how many cores you have. An application has to be multi-threaded in order to benefit from multiple cores and/or HyperThreading.

Forget Core2 and go with the new Intel i5 750 CPU, a P55 motherboard and 4GB of DDR3 RAM. Without you having to do anything the i5 750 will run at approx. 3.4GHz with load on just the one core and FS9 will LOVE it! As will you by the way...

Don't forget the video card guys! That aged agp card will not work with the P55 (Or any other motherboard produced today). If it's FS9 alone, you could build a cheap Core 2 system... One like mine can be built for under $700 if you know where to look.

I have (of course) PCI Express 16 graphic card. I thougt you had to be an archaeologist to find an AGP card nowadays. :( Carl

There's still people buying ATI HD AGP cards.

These people are neither PC nor gaming enthusiasts. I haven't used AGP since 2004.

In a word, yes. The duos and quads are a massive improvement even if their clock speed doesn't look all that much different from the single core system. And, to second what others have said, a good video card really helps too, the more memory, the better.

Lose not thine airspeed, lest the ground rise up and smite thee.

Thanks Capn' Obvious! :( But seriously, I'm aware they're "archaic".

I actually have a PCI card.... but that one just drives a third monitor (15" TFT...) while the 8800GT takes care of the other two. I did order a 5870 today which will be interesting to use with Dirt2 and DX11!

Why bring it up then? It has zero relevance to the topic at hand.

What specific video card do you have right now?

As I wasn't sure about which forum to post this topic I also put it in the FS 9 forum. Please follow the following link if you would like to see what kind of hardware I have put together on my list so far.http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtop...p;#entry1642236I also want to thank you for all the helpfull information so far.I am of course a bit exited if anyone should like to comment on my list for a new rig.Carl

Because he has an old system. Also, if you have read the entire thread, you'd see I didn't bring it up initially.EDIT: Crap, maybe I misread something. Sorry guys. That or someone edited there post and took the AGP part out I swear I saw...

Reading around -several web sites - that i7-8xx and i5-7xx turbo boost can benefit single core applications.I hope this is true but somebody has to test it.Also maybe win7 does a better job with i7-8xx and i5-7xx turbo boost, and single core apps than XP32. But then there are the Addon installers that have to be compatible. Sam
