Logitech G940

Interesting information - thanks for the review. Unfortunately it misses on one very key point for me. It's not a yoke. :) (nothing the reviewer can really help, though) Although I sometimes pine for the days of my CH Products Flightstick and Throttle to zip around the skies in an acrobatic jet, the vast majority of my sim flying is done in yoke equipped airplanes. From the trusted Cessna trainers to the venerable 747, I've been flying with "two" hands on the wheel as opposed to just one for many years now. We seem to be missing a good, solid, conservative YOKE these days. The new CH Products offering looks like a yoke gone crazy. The Saitek seems iffy. ...And the Premier offerings are too rich for the average simmer's blood. A controller manufacturer could probably do very well if they created a new, modern, CLEAN yoke with basic controls and design lines. I've had my CH yoke and pedals for YEARS now. (6? 7? More?) It's been the most stable item in my computer inventory. They've survived multiple moves, an apartment fire (pedals still bear the soot stains), and they've seen simulations come and go, but they're getting rougher and rougher. I was excited to read the review, and I saw the throttle module and got happy, saw the pedals and got happier, and saw the joystick and it all deflated. I'd love for Logitech to develop and market a yoke-based version of this package - even perhaps adding the yoke as a secondary add-on item to purchase and drop into the system. Good review. I loved the optional dog fur which was pictured in one of the shots. I wonder how much that adds to the price. ;)

The thing I don't understand about this review, is how could the reviewer give this product the AVSIM Gold Star Award, when there is a clear problem with overheating and reported arcing, which could be very dangerous? The reviewer himself experienced the overheating problem. I don't think it's appropriate for AVSIM to be recommending a product, that exhibits potentially dangerous electrical problems.

Thanks

I agree with this actually, I think it should have gotten a red flag as a potential fire hazard myself.

I do what I believe is right, not what is popular.

I have one, got it last week.No overheating issue here at all. Slight noise from the servo's if you leave it static for a little however as soon as you move the controller, no noise. As for the arcing. Its a powered unit. I unplug the power to the unit, then plug in the USB, and then the power to the unit. No issues if you do that. I am sure that Logitech wouldn't have put a product in the market that's going to catch fire... think about it eh?As for the simming... I had an X-45 before this. All I can say is that the FFB and the dual throttles make flying a dream. Want a helicopter without hydraulics for steering, turn that centring spring on so that it pushes back everytime you turn and it's very very good.Yes I think the software can be improved however the product manager has been on many forums now updating users about their progress on the unit's software. My biggest issue is knowledge on how to program the unit so that button's change colours when things go wrong. With in time, people will no doubt be producing xml scripts which allow for this. My issues which I am working on are.1. The throttles in FSX only go between 10-75%. Idle doesn't exist at the moment and neither does after burner unless F1 and double F4 are put to use. 2. Brakes need to be adjusted with their Null zones a bit better as brakes are very lightly on at the moment. So I can still take off with no issues however when I release my toe brakes I don't want to see a red indicator in the bottom left. So, I think at the moment unless you own one a lot of hearsay is going around which I personally don't think is that true. They are a brilliant system IMO.I suggest if you know someone who has one, go and try it out. That's probably the best way to see what they are like.

Hello gentlemen :)I apologize for my slow reply, but I'd forgotten I had an account here! Anyway, I feel that I have stated all that I have to say in my review, but I thank you very much for your feedback and input. I really appreciate it more than you know. But I will comment on the fire hazard- I think it's only dangerous if you leave your computer on constantly without attention. But I won't try myself :(Marqui- it's odd that that was your first post. I wonder if you work for Saitek :( I doubt you'll ever read this, though. Again, thank you so much, I really appreciate hearing from my readers.Have a wonderful Halloween!Kevin

I have recently bought a Logitech G-940 'HOTAS' System, which I intend to use with MS FS-X and flying helicopters. (I also have a complete Saitek Pro Flight System for use with 'real' flying machines!) There is very little to find about 'near real' controls for flying helicopter around, so the G-940 was the best I could find. To come as close as possible, I have made myself a sim-chair, where the the Joystick is mounted on a movable column between my legs (like having it in my lap), and the Throttle is mounted on the left side of the seat, near the floor, and in a 60 degrees upright angle! In real helicopters the 'Collective Control' looks like a cars handbrake lever, mounted on the floor on the left side of the seat, which you pull up (or down) to control the rotor lift. The Logitech Throttle falls naturally in my hand, it's easy to move and you can still adjust the small controls with your (my) thumb!!My problem is that the direction is wrong! When I lift it, the main pitch/trottle should increase, not decrease!I can invert the Joystick axes in FS-X, but I found no way to invert the Trottle function.(Software mod (patch) from Logitech? - Reconnect the Trottles inside (digitale) 'pot's'?)Anyone out there who also have similare problems!Kind regards Jon Olav / Norway :(

You can't do this within the Logitech "Profile" settings ? Seems that will do whatever you need to do......could even do one side of the throttle levers for throttle and the other side for collective

I have a Logi G940 and haven't had any of the problems posted here. Their far superior to my old Saitek X52 and rudder pedals. The Logitech pedals are wider spaced and built for a mans feet.In a roundabout way I can use the pedals with my Saitek Yoke and Twin throttle quadrants. But I also would wish Logitech would come out with a Yoke to use with the G940.Would buy it in a minute.I also have the G25 Steering wheel setup and it's the best for racing.Maybe 2010 a YOKE ? :(

I am sure that Logitech wouldn't have put a product in the market that's going to catch fire... think about it eh?
That's very naive pont of view - risky products do get onto the market. Last month Belkin recalled its TuneBase in-car iPod dock because of a fire risk.http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2009/10/23/be...unebase_recall/Cars are frequently recalled for the same reason. Also last month Ford recalled a large number of cars.http://www.switchfires.com/

Hey, I'd like to know something specifically about this system before I make a decision to buy it.Allowing for expected variance in the "realism" of the feel of this, since it is a PC game peripheral, does the force feedback allow you to feel the resistance on the stick decrease when adjusting elevator trim? The ability to feel yourself trimming the pressure off the controls is something I really would love to experience, and I want to make sure that the FF on this stick behaves in that manner. Thanks

Things like that would be more a part of the sim you are using and how the FF is done within it and not a result of the hardware... but, of course, as you trim you no longer need to hold the stick in the direction you have it, so that in itself makes the pressure needed drop off. FSX doesn't seem to have much in the way of FF details, but I see there is an add-on called "FS Force" that improves all FF items and adds such things as expansion cuts in the runway so you can feel the speed changes etc. I may have to try that as FSX FF isn't much to rave about IMO.I've been using the R2 rotary dial on the throtle for elevator trim, it does have much better feel than pushing a button(s) for trim and pretty much gives the effect of what you are saying although not really a FF thing. Also been flying the G940 without FF turned on in FSX, but with the stick turned on (electrical centering & general feedback) and that feels pretty good without all the extra feed back MS attempts to give you. Nothing bad about the G940 as it just reacts to what is sent from the sim. Can't speak for any air combat sim, might be better FF written in some.

I just tried a G940 at Frys, although it had no power, and the joystick seemed very "loose". Is it better with the power on and do you prefer it with or without the force feedback? Do you know if FS Force helps any? Thanks,Howard

Hello Howard,Yes, it's better when turned on.. :( There are no actual springs used so no stick centering when it's not powered up.. you CAN use it with the FF turned on in the sim and just have the stick powered on. No feed back of course.. but works nice even as a non-FF stick that way. Don't know what sim you are usning, but in FSX the FF provided isn't very good... not the fault of the G940 as it only does what it's told by the sim. However, there seems to be the add-on called "FS Force" that does improve the FF. There is a version for FS9 and one for FS10, as of right now, I think I like it with the FF turned off, but the FS Force might change my mind when I get it.I don't use any current combat sim so can't say how the FF is set in those. When FF is turned on in a sim, the G940 is very powerful.Have a read the Avsim user review this thread referred to in the first post, will give you more input on the unitOh, and just so you know, mine has not even gotten warm with use let alone hot...

Has anyone been able to find this item in a non boxstore? I know logitech MSRP can be twice that of what you would expect to pay in a computer store. At a price of $400 CAD I'm really turned off knowing that I'll probably find this product for $200-250 somewhere else in the future.

Just wanted to mention something from the original review that said the FF seemed a little slow on reacting. I have a MS SIdewinder FF2 stick that I use for FSX and Aces High II, an online combat sim. I have noticed the same effect on my current stick. If you, say, throw the stick over for a fast roll, it takes a split second for it to fight (and I do mean fight) back. The MS stick is a BEAST with the FF turned on and one peek inside will tell you why, the servo motors are HUGE! I used to put motors like those in 1/10 scale RC buggies.I've read several reviews for the G940. A few have said that the FF is a little on the weak side compared to the MS Sidewinder FF2 stick. But as much as I love my snake, eight buttons and no programmability (the original software doesn't like WinXp and nothing newer is available) just doesn't cut it in today's Sim market. Despite the steep price tag, I want one of these.Power and Arcing issues I have NOT heard about until this review. My MS Sidewinder has it's power supply in the base of the stick but also has hand-detection. If you're not holding the stick then the FF servos are powered down and draw no power. I would hope the G940 has something similar. My snake is plugged in 24/7, btw.I'm looking forward to more reviews for this unit. Most of the guys in my combat sim squadron fly Saitek X52s and that's a fine product from what they tell me, but I gotta have the force feedback. In all my flight sims that support it, it just makes everything so much more real, especially when you're pulling hard Gs in a P51 with an FW 190 A8 on your six... Gotta love that stall buffet and tunnel vision...
