March 9, 201016 yr Hey guys, the question I have for the gurus out there is this,I want to get the new 980 i7 processor to replace my i7 920, will I need to reinstall my OS afterwards, or will it just be good to go.I know I have to update my BIOS to take advantage of the 6 cores. Thanks
March 9, 201016 yr PingPong: I don't know about your BIOS, but you should not have to reinstall your OS. Just put the new processor in per the manufacturer's instructions, fire everything up and you should be good to go. Assuming you're on a post-Win2000 OS and not something like Widows 95 or ME or something like that . . . :( Smooth Skies! -- Chuck B. I don't know what you are using for a motherboard but most X58 mobo's got Gulftown BIOS updates late last year. March 12, 201016 yr p.s. In your sig you list that your i7 920 is clocked to 4.2GHz while your more pricey first-gen extreme chip is only at 4.0 LOL! March 12, 201016 yr It's highly recommended that you do a fresh OS install with that upgrade.Since when, why do you say this and where is it highly reccomended? Its the same chipset, same drivers so there is nothing to loose or gain. Are we suposed to re-install the OS everytime we disable or re-enable cores, or when we over clock or under clock, install new ram? No.Paul

What's the point?Being said by a man using really ancient hardware :( Some of the first generation processers and from some manufacturing batches was impossilbe to OC as high as processor from other batches. AnandTech had an article where they compared different 920 processors and some of the processors wouldn't allow an OC above 3.8GHz while others easily reached over 4GHz.EDITED: Ryan, I just read your post about your dream build. Turn all your clocks ahead 1 hour, check the batteries in your smoke detectors, and be sure to do a complete reinstall of your entire operating system and programs. :( Smooth Skies! -- Chuck B. March 12, 201016 yr Being said by a man using really ancient hardware :( EDITED: Ryan, I just read your post about your dream build. Finally :(lol, isn't it amazing when a 3GHz AMD cpu is called ancient? And I agree with you. Tech moves fast these days.Anyway, the title was more than appropriate - I'm not sure if that purchase will ever be made... March 12, 201016 yr Maybe a solution and end to this discussion could be: Benchmark your system. Install the new processor and fire up Windows. Restart windows a couple of times. Benchmark your system. Compare to your previous benchmark. Do you get the expected performance compared to other benchmarks of similar systems? If the system doesn't perform as expected - reinstall Windows. My two cents :(
