Hi guys, a simple question...related to PMDG 737 NGX.

1) Can i insert winds aloft data only for cruise waypoint?

2) Have I to use "descent forecast" page on FMC for inserting three different altitude?

3) and for climb phase, no entry?

I have fsbuild and in its navlog are reported winds aloft for every wypoints of my route, can't I insert those for climb and descent?

Many hanks

Check out pages 131-143 - the Winds Aloft Addendum in Tabs's NGX Tutorial #2. there's great guidance on how to utilize the winds aloft data and enter them into the FMC.

I get winds aloft data from ActiveSky 2012 (and ASE and AS6.5 as well provide it). There are online sources for this data; in the US, try this link: http://weather.uwyo.edu/upperair/sounding.html

I use NOAA for my winds, http://aviationweather.gov/iffdp/.

how do the weather guys know the winds aloft anyway? i mean do they have some giant 40,000ft tall windsock or what?

Always wanted to know hehe.

There are weather balloons for measurements and mathematical models how to calculate wind directions and speeds according to many parameters (pressure systems for example) for forecasts.

Actually its not necessary to enter winds aloft into the FMC, but its a good practice.

Thankyou guys, I red carefully tutorial 2 and also the part related to wind alofts.

But wind aloft FMC entry is related only to cruis?e and descent forecats?

No entry for climb waypoint?

Another question: fsbuild provide a navlog with winds aloft for every route waypoints, climb cruise and descent. Why we can only enter cruise waypoint, and descent forecast? What is the function of this navlog with winds aloft data for every waypoint if you can only input cruise, no climb, and descent only forecast?

I'm no expert, but I'm guessing that winds aloft data have the most value in helping the FMS calculate more accurate VNAV predictions, which to me would seem most important in the cruise and descent portions of the flight. On climb out, I'm sure winds aloft affect the flight, of course, but in 15-20 minutes, one is at cruising altitude, and that amount of time is usually insignificant as compared to the rest of the flight, particularly when it comes to VNAV calculations.

Dear RW pilots...does that make sense?

Yes Rudy, you are right. Maybe this is the reason why in FMC you can only enter cruise and descent prediction for winds aloft.
