Looking for realistic water

Featured Replies

I posted a few screenshots in another topic and got comments that the water doesn't look realistic AT ALL, mainly because of the very obvious reflections. I've been trying various things but I don't really know how the water should look like in real life... :( Could someone give me some directions? I fly low and slow GA only. Maybe there is a specific FSWC preset I should use to get more realistic waters...? I also own FEX and REX so feel free to give some tips on them too. (And btw I only fly above PNW, so water colors can't be changed there.)

Hi Jan van E,As i said in the other topic, the ocean water where i live looks something like this:ScreenHunter_09Feb202148.jpgthisScreenHunter_04Feb202121.jpgor thisScreenHunter_09Jun020523.jpgBut i realize you just fly in PNW and i don't what the water looks like there.I think you should use REX and FSWC and make some changes to see what looks better for you. You don't need to close and re-open FSX to see the changes you make in FSWC, just go from window mode to fullscreen and it will apply the changes.Regards.

In my opinion, REX with water set to 1.x high on average is pretty close to reality. I live 2 blocks from the Pacific Ocean, and I have flown out of KLAX over the water 40+ times this year and that setting is what looks the closest to what I see out of the windows.Alvega,You are fortunate to live by water that looks that clear and reflective.

Alvega,Please share your REX texture & FSWC settings. Thanks,Jose

Water must be on 2.0 and REX with the wave action set to sparkling gives some great looking water.

That setting is nice for screenshots but not for realistic waters... :(

What REX-settings should you advice? And do I really need to use FSWC to get rid of unrealistic reflections?

REX sparkling water with FSWC Ashton's settings are pretty good (though not necessarily for everywhere).

J - Do I take it correctly that you dont have/use FSWC? You really should get it. Its very helpful.I dont know what you think of the water in any of my screenshots but my FSWC settings (v3.15) are:(in order)FSWC: 70,10,6,65,178,67,39,0I use water 2.low and I like the way those settings make inland water and bay areas look. Its not right for oceansor high altitudes but it looks great for low flying (IMO).Everybody has a different opinion of reality so Ill not get into that. Get FSWC and try out my settings for a while. Note that I dont know what they look like with 'water 2.mid or high'.I never cared much for the cloud reflections. I like to see trees and buildings and mountains reflecting but not clouds. It doesnt look right to me.One more thing: I use a fairly dark green water for inland and bay areas. Ive never uploaded it becuase its not done.I cant make tropical water look right. FSX uses tropical water in both Mobile Bay (Alabama USA) and near Brsibane. One is green and fairly clearand the other is blue with coral (I think). You cant have both until FTX decides to redo the wtare for all of Australia. i hope they will.

There's always a sunset happening somewhere in the world that somebody is enjoying.

Funny, I was working on a high definition photoreal island scenery the other day and was trying to incorporate the photoreal water around it into the blend for the FSX water. no matter what settings I used in my .inf file, I could not get it to look right, even went back to the SDK to see if I was missing something. I then went and checked out some of my payware sceneries that had this effect (Tongass, Plum Island) and sure enough, they were not displaying properly. My drivers were current, but couldn't figure it out. Turned out is was FSWC that was keeping this from showing properly. I set it back to default and it displayed like it should, so I am not using it any longer since it obviously changes some shader settings that affect others.I have been flying quite a bit in DX10 mode lately just because the water looks so good, love the white caps.

Best, Michael

I'll try that FSWC preset: what FSX settings is best for this? 2.x low or med or high...?

I do have FSWC (hence my question for presets :( ). I'll try your settings too! I'm all into low flying above inland waters, so that sounds good. It's a pity you can't have reflections of trees and mountains without clouds...

Actually I was wrong--I've been using REX Sparkling but changed to "Use this!" That setting plus Ashton's setting in FSWC makes a good combination. I use 2.0 High with those settings. The water comes out dark but works well, especially for lakes and rivers.

Just wait a couple of days and I'll upload to the library an updated shader mod for FSX Fully Shader 3.0 compliant.
