Engines Keep Failing

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I made a post about this recently with the PMDG but it turns out it happens in all aircraft. Every flight, regardless of the aircraft, at some point the engines fail. Yesterday as I was flying SFO-IAH the engines failed before departure, after departure, and I must've restarted them 8 times before I landed in Oakland. Last week I flew IAH-SFO after reinstalling FS and they did not fail. I installed Squawkbox and suddenly the issue started occurring. I removed Squawkbox and it still happens. Does anybody have the slightest idea why? Thanks

What is your "default" aircraft?Possibly you have changed it to a cold and dark startup and the battery switch and/or avionics switches are turned off. Those settings would then be passed on to whatever aircraft you decide to fly and unless they are turned on, the engines will fail as soon as the battery is exhausted. There may be other reasons but I would investigate that possibly first.

My current default aircraft is the C172. To get cold and dark I load in the 172, pull the mixture, turn the key, and turn off the master. After that I load into my aircraft for the flight such as the PMDG.

Make sure none of the random faiures are enabled...

Im not sure that would be the problem, only because the OP said he restarted the engines 8 times while in flight. Im not sure if you would be able to restart with the dead battery. On the other hand, would the engine restart even with the dead battery by using ram air???I have no idea what could be the issue, never heard or seen anything like this other than it being pilot induced. Hope you can get it sorted out, and if you do hopefully report back as I am very interested in what the solution is to this.

Hi,As mentioned, a dead battery can cause this - try turning on your generators. But it could be something deeper - sinister even. It is a conspiracy I tell ya! Anyways, I had a problem where every plane I flew would run out of gas because after the main tank was emptied, the fuel did not transfer. It had fuel on-board but ran out during flight. I checked the fuel transfer switch and it was on. Still no luck. Then one day I decided to move my fs9.cfg to a different directory and let FS build a new one. Problem gone! Maybe this would help with the dying engine issue? Of course there are some tweaks to make to the new config to conform to your likes/dislikes but it's worth it. FS loads a little faster too! Good luck.

I am definitely going to try rebuilding the fs9.cfg. That definitely sounds like it could fix it, thanks a ton.

Sure, I hope it helps. I have no idea how some settings get changed - I'm certainly not doing it intentionally. It is a mystery and happens to me quite often. Not so much with FSX as FS9 but it happens on both. I do fiddle about with the sim and it's probably something I install/tweak/uninstall in search of the Holy Grail in performance and scenery excellence. I need to fly more and tweak less, that's what I need.

Unfortunately, deleting the fs9.cfg did not solve my problem. I will explain everything that I did up until the failure to see if it helps. I loaded my flight in the C172, pulled the mixture, turned off the ignition, and shut off the master. After this, I switched to the PMDG 737-800. I did my typical set-up and pushed back from the gate. I started my engines, began my taxi to the runway, and about 3 minutes after the engine start they both failed. I checked to make sure that failures were not turned on or set at random. Everything seemed perfectly normal. Thanks for all of the help.

This sounds like a fuel related problem to me. If random failures are turned off, then I have no idea what else could cause it. At least you eliminated the fs9.cfg as having some unknown thing. Right? I mean, when you refreshed fs9.cfg, did you start over with the default flight at KSEA in the Cessna? At that point, you should have gotten back into your plane of choice, set the airport of choice, parking spot of choice, then shut that airplane down to cold 'n dark and don't rely on the Cessna's cold 'n dark settings to work for all aircraft.Strange happenings - we are probably overlooking the obvious. Anyone? Beuller?

Are you using a yoke with 3 levers on top from CH produts.I had a problem no matter what aircraft i was using engines would die on me.I found out that the right lever controled the mixture. If you move it all the way forward it was fine. I finally desabled it and never had a problem since. That was my problem.Hope it helps.Nebojsa

I am using the CH yoke. I will try moving the mixture all the way forward and see if it fixes the problem. Thanks.

If you fly jets, you don't need the mixture and propeller lever assignments, so delete them. It will protect you from potential surprises.

Thank you so much, this fixed the problem. I flew a 5 hr flight last night without any issues. I really appreciate it, thanks!

:( .Great, and thanks for letting us know.Sometimes you never hear from the person and you dont know if it helped or not.Happy flying.Nebojsa
