June 6, 201015 yr Well here i am, struggling with the decision to upgrade from XP64 to W7 64. I hate the idea of starting all over again as it will take at least 3 days to get everything back up again. Should i do it? Is it really worth it? June 7, 201015 yr Personally, I love it.There's a good reason to upgrade, something I remember Ryan mentioned some time ago: Microsoft is no longer giving support for XP, and that means no more security patches and stuff. Besides, and this is something I haven't tested myself given that I've never used XP64, W7 is known to give a slight boost in performance to FSX
June 7, 201015 yr I highly recommend it. I have been running W7 64 for 5 months now and I have had no problems with it and I love it. If you upgrade to W7 it will be a change of scenery which is always nice.
June 7, 201015 yr Commercial Member Best OS MS has ever made as far as I'm concerned. You also have to contend with the fact that hardware manufacturers are beginning to abandon support for XP, the new GTX4xx series video cards for instance are having major driver issues in XP, but not in Win 7. June 7, 201015 yr Having done the upgrade, I will say, plan on it taking a loooooong time. I upgraded from Vista Home to W7 Pro, which required a clean install. It wasn't terribly onerous, but its a lot of sitting around and then reinstalling stuff - lots of stuff. I had all but one of my product codes for FSX related products handy, and I dug the other one of of my outlook archives. Was it worth it? Yes, absolutely. I like the OS, have had minimal problems with it. YMMV. Doug Orvis PP-ASEL-IA (USA), Based at KHEF Picture courtesy of Kyle Rodgers
June 7, 201015 yr Author Thanks for the input, i will be upgrading then, i know its going to be a long painful sleepless process trying to get my sim back to the way it is now but im sure it will be worth it. Im now deciding between Professional and Ultimate. I've already ruled out Home Premium because that one doesnt support the "XP Mode" addon which might come in handy. June 7, 201015 yr Pro is probably your better option unless you really need all the extra fancy protection and encryption stuff in ultimate.Just remember DX9 and the UIautomation.dll you need. Oh and the scenery addition workaround, if I could remember which fs version lol.You certainly wont regret it anyway.John Ellison
June 7, 201015 yr Author well ill be using both FS9 and FSX, but what UIautomation.dll and scenery addition workaround are you talking about? Bryan Richards "People depend so much on automation that they forget how to get the automation to work." B.W.
June 7, 201015 yr well ill be using both FS9 and FSX, but what UIautomation.dll and scenery addition workaround are you talking about?RE: the addition of scenery to FS in Win 7.There is a known "bug" in Win 7 which makes the activation (adding) of new scenery entries a bit more problematic than it was in FS2004.This thread will describe how it is done (complete with pictures):http://forums.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?t=205432Someone else will need to answer your other question.

June 9, 201015 yr Well I'm going to build a new computer within the next two weeks. Do you have any pieces of advice on how to deal with W7? Any workarounds to help fsx? Steven Penninck
June 9, 201015 yr Author Thanks everyone, im gona pick up a copy of W7 tomorrow and get to work...the only advice i can offer is go for a 64bit OS to prevent OOM errors. Bryan Richards "People depend so much on automation that they forget how to get the automation to work." B.W.
June 9, 201015 yr Read a couple of posts back in this thread for the UIautomationcore.dll fix & the add scenery workaround for FSX in W7 :( Also, and this is likely to be valid for Vista too, using classic windows theme helps FSX a bit with frames in windowed mode. June 9, 201015 yr Well my former pc ran vista on it so...I know about the 64 bit and all that because that's what I used and I did use windows classic when I ran fsx on the old computer. Steven Penninck
