Featured Replies

Hey All,I was just skimming through the manual and stumbled on the 4GB patch thing for FSX. Is it possible/needed for Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit? Thanks

No, the 4 gig patch is not necessary for 64 bit OS, these will already utilize all your RAM.

Thanks. I knew the 64bit allows something stupid like 64gb of RAM, but I wasn't sure if it was a limitation for FSX or not. Thanks again!

It never hurts to ask, especially since Microsoft like to change their minds on what they give us users and like to use things like memory limits to sell other version (Like they now do if you want the latest Direct-X,,, gay). Personally I think they need to make one version, maybe two but that's my opinion. It's kind of funny (ok not funny at all) that even with the best version money can buy, you still have an OS that doesn't allow you to have your programs run as expected from the Program Files directory without disabling UAC or needing to alter priveldges, doh. Personally I would like to see two OS's.1 = Windows Locked = Yes this is your copy of Windows but be prepared to be told we will need to get the administrators ok even though this system only has one user.2 = Windows Unlocked = Your apps are yours to do with and you will not be micromanaged or have any need to disable all of our Nanny group policies, security features, etc... :Big Grin:The break down for Win 7 goes like this:Version.............................................Limit in 32-bit Windows................Limit in 64-bit WindowsWindows 7 Ultimate, Enterprise & Professional .............4..................................... GB192 GB Windows 7 Home Premium ....................................4GB ..................................... 16 GB Windows 7 Home Basic ......................................4GB ...................................... 8 GB Windows 7 Starter .........................................2 GB...................................... 2 GB Vista is a pretty similar break down:Version.............................................Limit in 32-bit Windows................Limit in 64-bit WindowsWindows Vista Ultimate, Enterprise & Business..............4 GB.................................... 128 GB Windows Vista Home Premium.................................4 GB..................................... 16 GB Windows Vista Home Basic.................................. 4 GB...................................... 8 GB Windows Vista Starter..................................... 1 GB................................. No 64bit version I just figured I toss this here for others in case they're curious, but mainly because I'm rendering something that is going to take all night, and is still on the first pass..... :(

What is necessary is FSX SP2 or Acceleration...DJ

Wrong!!! bc i have needed to use the 4gb patch on my win 7 64bit,and i have accel sp2 installed. now i am not getting anymore run out of memory errors.

The piece in the manual is in two parts. The first talks about patching FSX to enable it to use more than 3GB of RAM. That's not necessary if you're running FSX SP2 or Acceleration as they are already '4GB aware'. The second part is about altering the Windows boot file and will not work, and as someone has already pointed out, isn't required, on 64-bit versions of Windows. In summary the first part of the advice in the manual is only valid if you're running a pre-SP2 version of FSX, and the second part only for a 32-bit version of Windows if you have 4GB RAM installed.Andy Lawton
