Adding more physical memory

.. but, vonmar, you might like to search the forums here for "Large Address Aware" if you have not adapted the fs exe file (though if you never get any OoM CTDs, why should you? Do you run FS9/FSX on x32 or x64?)... Sorry if you are already fully aware of all this, I can't tell from your posts..

I do run FS9 and FSX.My first flight sim purchase was Sublogic, a few years back.I am now using Vista 32 bit OS with 4GB of memory ..The systems are sold in that configuration now.All programs I purchase are 32 bit programs, naturally. Here is what my system is using running a 32 bit program:Memory / Drive Status: Memory Load Index 26 pcnt. No, but of course everyone's system is different. I only get OoMs when I fly 'serious' a/c like the PMDG 747, especially when flying into 'serious' airports like Aerosoft's Heathrow with lots of traffic. I also have Ultimate Terrain.. With most a/c, including other payware like PSS I rarely if ever get OoM CTDs. PMDG is the main culprit, but the a/c are so wonderful that I would be loathe to ditch them.Odd: having limped to the gate at EGLL a bit earlier with PMDG's 747 - frame rates as low as 5fps, I saved the flight and shut down FS9. Came back just now and loaded my flight as it was just after touchdown, and with all other elements the same as before I now get almost 30fps taxiing to the gate. Why on earth??? Andy is absolutley right in his reply!Martin

Vonmar read this...http://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2007/03/23/memory-management-demystifying-3gb.aspx?And thishttp://blogs.msdn.com/b/ptaylor/archive/2007/06/15/fsx-and-win32-process-address-space.aspxOOM errors have nothing to do with physical ram installed. Not to mention, 64bit is much better at memory managment than 32bit......By default the SP2 FSX.exe has had the LAA flag added to it by default. Telling it to look beyond the 2GB virtual ram 32bit limit.Yes OOM errors are an issue for people running Ultimate terrain, memory intensive addons like PMDG and high quality airports.Try loading many large images into PSP and see how easy it is to get an OOM error. If your running the stock FS9/FSX then you won't have an issue.

Sounds like a memory leak but in all likelihood it's just the way Windows operates. It holds onto memory after the process is done so in your case it held on to it and it sounds like you were almost to the point of OOM but not quite. Also hitting the save key and then going back to your flight can restore some frames.

Yes, probably. But looking in Task Manager I can see how different things are from my old x32 setup - the frame rates are quite a bit lower on the whole (unless I save the flight and restart FS9, as I say - though the results of doing that are not alwsya as dramatic as I described above) but the amount of physical memory left is much greater - I used to get OoMs when less than c.50MBs of memory (out of 2GBs) were remaining. Now I may be juddering to my gate at as little as 5fps, but even at a busy, cloudy EGLL with a PMDG 747 and my changing from cockpit to spot view every 30" or so (fatal in my old setup), I still have at least 150MBs of free RAM (according to Task manager) and certainly no OoMs.Well, it's academic now because I am ordering my new PC tomorrow: I just hope and pray with the specs above that I shall be able to run FS9 with no further problems. Perhaps even FSX if I get around to reinstalling it (those amazing sceneries from Orbyx make it very tempting to do so!).Martin

"I used Process Monitor, but had already shut down all unnecessary processes before the flight...."Could you please share with all of us a list of the "unnecessary processes" that you shut down ? I've been looking for 12 years for someone, anyone that could give me this info as to what processes could be shut down only to keep FS2004 running correctly. Thanks jerrycwo4
