Hi Guys and PMDG staff,Now,I have every single FSX title [and some fs9] products from you.The addons have been amazing but there has always been one area which has been a let down.and that is the liveries and wing/engine textures on the aircraft.. Mcphat are at least doing some HD Md11 textures..check this picture below, and notice the absolute stunning wing texture2010-9-26_13-30-14-384.jpgAre PMDG doing something different with the textures this year? Will they be to a similar quality to ?MCphat [if thats possible?]Alex

I think Ryan has in the past detested the deification of "McPhat" (I can't stand typing that name, it's so dumb, but that's beside the point) and has indicated that PMDG is quite capable of achieving that quality and I believe him so I'd guess they're going to at least approach that quality, always being observant of the quality/FPS trade-off. So I guess it's not a question of whether they can, but whether they should.

That is THE most important thing people need to keep in mind. When someone comes along and makes HD textures available, they do it with good intentions and it is never seen as anything bad (which is great, until it slows someones comp, or effects FPS, video memory consumption, etc...). But, when a developer that has had years of overall customer experiences that have one issue after the other that differ so greatly from one user to the other, it's hard to base their entire product/liveries on something that may effect part of their customer base in a negative way.Having said that, look at the 747-8 textures :)

Not sure if i am allowed to say because its not PMDG? [someone clear that for me?]But if you all check the 747 and md11, and go onto wingwiew for example, there is a very low resolution there. So thats the question really, will the NGX be similar to the wing above?

This is just me eye-balling the picture, but I would guess that it was the Captain-Sim 752 with Eastern Airlines McPhat textures.

Take-offs are optional, landings are mandatory.
The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.
To make a small fortune in aviation you must start with a large fortune.

There's nothing less important than the runway behind you and the altitude above you.
It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground.

Personally I reckon PMDG have got the level of textures just right - not too much of a memory hog and detailed enough to be ok for 99% of users. Again personally I can think of only one reason to have HD textures and that is to show off movies and pics in HD - no offense intended to those who want them of course as it's just my opinion.I'd rather have a good view inside the office rather than outside where I hardly ever look on a flight - probably why I haven't dowloaded the HD MD-11 textures produced and on AVSIM.John Ellison

The PMDG 737NGX bitmaps exceed 300 pixels/meter and are exceptionally crisp and detailed. I doubt you will be disappointed.

There is about 0% performance hit when i use McPhat UHDT compared to low res textures with some of my planes, so I dont really buy that there's a tradeoff between looks and performance in that regard. I'm pretty happy that vscimone is saying that the textures will be high res tho, not that I'll look at the outside much. After all, its inside the cockpit all the magic takes place

Something might be wrong with my math here but just by going off of a quick google search, it says a 737 is 42.1 meters long. I then multiplied it by 300 and got 12630 haha. That of course would just be the fuse lengthwise (horizontal) so would imagine that the 300/1 meter is squared, therefore giving a texture resolution of 4210, or most likely the closest of 4096x4096.Of course I may be wrong but hey, I'm curious too :(

We photographed the entire exterior of a 737-800 in a ridiculous resolution up close to it if that tells you anything... tongue.gifFor what it's worth btw, we don't like that plastic-looking specular shine effect McPhat and other seem to love applying to their paints - real airplanes don't look like that. We're going for the same look you'd see with your eyes on the average 737 at the airport or whatever.

Ryan,I agree with you on the "plastic" look of the McPhat textures. Even the dirt on the flaps seems to be shiny and refelective. Great to know that you took exterior shots of the actual aircraft. Also to the people saying McPhat is a stupid name when I was writing it abouve I accidently wrote McFat. Now that sounds like what you get served at Mcdonalds :D

So you're putting in a meter what the eye should see in an inch? That almost 40 times less then what we should be seeing. Obviously, I kid. (Offset printing has a nominal resolution of 300 DPI (dots per inch) derived from what the eye can actually see as maximum. And there are almost 40 inches in a meter.)
