New FSX computer

What a ridiculous thing to say. Just how many people do you know over the last four years that have switched back from FSX to FS9? Two? Maybe three? And the hundreds of thousands of us that have switched from FS9 to FSX, do you think we are all idiots? Do you really think there is anything you can say that will convince us that FS9 is not dead? Remember - we all used it once and most of us no longer even have it installed!
+1 :(

Hello.Just a bit of experience, as I happened to just changed my computer, what I got too was to make this "little" configuration that would be about 1500 euros.Processor : Intel Core i7-950, that was the highest perf/price I could get, the 960 adds very little perf for twice the price, which is not making it worth it in my opinion.Memory : 6GB DDRAM3 Corsair PC 12800 (1600Mhz) CL8, here I went for a three modules of 2GB to take advantage of the Triple Channel technology.Motherboard : Asus P6T Deluxe V2, here it is not what changes the most in the performance, but I had already ASUS MB previously and never meet troubles so I conitnued with themGraphic Card : Well I'm not only a simmer, but I also play some heavy graphics games, so I went for a NVidia GTX 580, latest and most powerful card existing right now, and it is just barely more expensive than the 480 for best performance with lower noise and better thermal dissipation. I also now that in general Nvidia is better for FSX :)Power : Antec TruePower 750W, to give the baby what it needs in terms of power and keeping a bit of marginTower : Antec P193 I like the interior which is well thought, and the little systems to reduce noice, like for the hard drives.Hard Drives : I took 4 1TB disks, 2 are for the systems and my personal data using RAID1 to have a backup and protection over them, the other two being simple hard drives with no RAID, FSX being on one and the applications that can be installed outside of FSX being on the second. So far I've not made a lot of flights yet but I've got sliders maxed or almost maxed and not made any special tweaks with traffic AI at 50% for both type of planes, I've been running with REX Overdrive, Active Sky Evolution, FS Global 2010 and Ultimate Terrain Europe X, and have been doing flights between Frankfurt and London Heathrow both with the scenery by Aerosoft (Mega Airport) with AES active and using the 747X and MD11X. From what I could see the FPS were a little low on these big airports but nothing too bothering, rather around the 20fps limit (I've uncapped the fps limiter) and as for the config file of FS I only set the HIGHMEMFIX as Well as the USePools 0 optimisation, I have to search a good list of the tweaks that works and that I can use to further improve. So I do believe and hope the NG will work correctly, I've also checked FSL Concorde-X which ran smoothly at london too, though I did not did the full flight but I had troubles of performance with my old configuration that just completely disappeared. So far so good I would say :)

Good grief!!! All that and FSX still runs only at 20fps in high density areas? I think that this is why so many of us are steering clear of FSX until something better comes along. If it doesn't at least I can run FS9 with everything maxed out with what I have now. I want to fly not fiddle with the innards of the box or the software. I have no doubt that FSX is better but I could not stand the unpredictability or the expense I read about in these forums.Gerry

Well there is something to take into account though that is the limitations of FSX, no matter the Hardware a game engine has it's limitations. And even on an old game like Train Simulator you can find big addons with lots of details where the highest computer will still crumble, just because it is over the engine limitations. I don't know what they are for FSX but they are here nevertheless. And so I'm not bothered so much, it is really the minimum I got on big scenery and it depends on lots of things, I've also AA and filtering activated, and for the weather cloud density and distance are set to their maximum too. So it is very fluid and more than enough to get the approach without being bumpy because you're missing horsepower.

Guys,I realize the PMDG forums aren't AVSIMs nerve center for FSX Computer building, but I have to ask if any of you have tried putting FSX on a second HDD instead of the Master, and if that brings any bonus to FPS or performance.I've heard stories of people installing FSX and FSX ONLY onto its own Harddrive and getting almost 10 FPS in response. Any thoughts on that?

Don't get the GTX480 - the GTX570 just came out today (I ordered one late tonight at newegg when they went up) - it's faster than the 480, way less power/heat and is ~$100 cheaper.

Yay the 4XX generation is not very interesting now that the 5xx is here which basically is the fixed version of the 4xx with less power consumption, less loise, less heat, and about 20% more power for graphics.
