For many of us, the movie "Airplane" rates as the high point of comedy. Its star, Leslie Neilsen, who played the doctor to deadpan perfection, passed away today at 84. "Airplane," along with the "Naked Gun" films, stood apart from the other comedies of their time.

I agree. Don't think I missed any of his movies. Surprising he passed away so soon as 84 isn't really old anymore with all the technology. May he rest in peace!Best regards,Jim

Was sad to hear about this. Leslie Nielsen will be missed, may he rest in peace. 'Airplane' and the 'Naked Gun' films are among my favourite comedies, and I used to love watching 'Police Squad!' re-runs on TV. He wasn't a dedicated comedy actor in the beginning of his carrier though - I think the first time I sore him was as the captain in the 'The Poseidon Adventure'. He was in 'Forbidden Planet' too.Sad news.... A true movie star - He won't be forgotten.

Sad indeed, We're losing so many of the original actors of the 40's and 50's. Mr. Nielsen was a dramatic actor for as long as I can remember. He got tired of that and went to comedy.

A sad loss indeed, from straight acting stuff like the amazing Forbidden Planet, to the deadpan comic genius of Police Squad, Nielsen was one of the great gifts of the movie world. Forbidden Planet was based on Shakespeare's The Tempest. The magician, his beautiful daughter, shipwrecked sailors and the monster Calaban. It all fits.
