What happened to my fs9.exe file?

Featured Replies

Hi. Today my fs9.exe file, instead of showing the usual black aircraft, now shows the MS default (as per screenshot). It still works, but all my flt files are also now showing the same thing. The FS9 icon in the taskbar when it is running is also this 'blank' icon.I copied the file over from backup (in the backup folder it shows as normal) but as soon as I paste it into my FS9 folder, the icon changes to the MS default one.Yet another mystery. Hard to believe sometimes the way one's PC changes with no (known) instructions to do so!!Martin

.. thanks, but it's not a shortcut, it's the exe file itself. If I try on one of the flt shortcuts, the proper 'black plane' icon shows, but the shortcut pic remains the same.

Did a system restore to a point I made yesterday and now all is fine again. Obviously a Windows problem, because I only have System Restore active for my C (Windows) Drive - I back up my FS drives in other ways. This sort of thing is happening all the time, but I don't suppose I am totally alone in this..M.

Thought that would do it!!About a year ago all of my desktop icons changed to Adobe PDF icons and no matter what I clicked on it would only run Adobe Reader. Something in the registry must have got screwed but a system restore put it all right.David

I've been having weird issues with my photoshop file icons lately, it seems if I just "Save" rather than "Save as" PS throws out the little preview thumbnail or whatever it is and any .psd file without the thumbnail wants to display the icon for whatever type of file I last worked with. I've had .psds show up with the FS9 icon, Nero, Active Sky, whatever. Rebooting seems to fix the problem for a little while but soon it returns. I didn't think it was anything to worry about, but I've noticed now that some programs CTD immediately whenever I navigate to a folder that contains some of these un-thumbnailed .psd files, i.e in gmax if I pull up the material editor and try to apply a .psd as a texture, as soon as I open the folder containing the .psds everything dissapears and I'm immediately staring at the desktop. This happens in other apps too, not just gmax. I think this all started about the time I installed Sketchup, and the CTD happens in Sketchup quite regurlarly. Maybe my hard drive is about to pack in, I don't know. Anybody else ever seen anything like this?Jim

It was OK for a little while, but it's gone back to the blank MS icon again!! Oh........ !!!!!

This sort of thing is generally due to registry corruption... could be due to disk errors or some other exe that you installed recently.DJ

Odd that it's only FS9.exe that is affected. All other programmes, including FSX, are OK. Also odd that a system restore fixed the issue for an hour or so, then it came back.Ran CheckDisk - no problems. No viruses found ...

I got so fed up of this (the icons would be fine for a while after a System restore, then suddenly go 'blank' again) that I have restored my C drive using a Window 7 System Image I made a couple of weeks ago. This undoes my recent Windows updates, including the installation of Windows 7 SP1. If (and it is 'if' as yet) I don't get this problem again I will know it is something to do with SP1, or one of the updates I have let Windows install. If so, I am switching the update service off - if it 'aint broke, don't fix it, and all that..If it does come back again, I am going to be really stuck (and cross!)....Martin

Sounds like your icons cache is getting corrupted. If thats all it is, you can force a rebuild of the cache through control panel:Control Panel, DisplaySelect Appearance, in dropdown select IconIncrease SizeDecrease SizeDave

Not sure if it is as simple as that (happened immediately I installed Win7 SP1 - went away again as soon as I uninstalled SP1), but will try that first if it happens again.M.

Martin, forgive me if this is a daft question but since Win 7 and FS9 are both MS products, have you asked them?D

I don't know how to ask them - without paying a large fee. My Windows 7 is OEM and FS9 is too old to qualify. :(M.

Attn. 'davegriff' Dave ..... - well it WAS as simple as that - I didn't have the problem for weeks and weeks, then it came back today, so as you suggested I deleted the icon cache (not quite how you described in Windows 7, but easy enough to find out how to do it|) and the FS9.exe file and icons associated with files that open with FS9.exe are now back with the black a/c icon. Thanks,Martin
