I'm currently using a Trial Version of Avlasoft as a replacement for the ubiquitous FSNavigator which is,alas, no more not in FS9 or FSX flavours. The Avlasoft program is superb.Only one drawback being the inhibitive cost of it which is equivalent to what I'd expect to pay for a sim aircraft add-on.My question is, is there anything out there, freeware or payware that does more or less the same job,i.e providing me with a tracked moving map that I can follow in a windowed mode instead of having to pause the sim just to check the map, which really takes away the continuity flow?Al(Chock),I'm sure you'll have a solution. Thanks in advance.

Yeah, that'd be Flight Keeper probably, which has the advantage of actually displaying town names as well as the navaids on the ACARS gauge if you want it to, so it tells you exactly which town you are over on your flights, and I kind of like that feature. There is also Feel There's 'Map!' for 21 quid, that is a bit like the displays you get in the cabin of an airliner that tell passengers where their plane is. Map! is less than Flight Keeper, but to be honest, Flight Keeper blows it out of the water in every respect and has about a billion other features too. Even if that were not so, you're far better off with FK, because you can actually take a similar map gauge to Feel There's Map! out of a few FS aeroplanes that have a similar thing, such as the Wilco 737 or the Aerosim B777, which is of course a 'free' way to do it, assuming you have any FS aeroplane that has one of those.Active Sky Evolution has a sort of ACARS gauge in it as well, which is less capable than Flight Keeper's ACARS, but if you have ASE, then it does mean you have that gauge (see the manual for info on installing it into your aircraft). If you get Reality XP's improved GNS 530 gauge, that has improved GPS stuff based on the real system, and that is effectively a moving map, although probably not exactly what you had in mind, then of course there is also the less capable FS GPS gauge, that will do it too, but to a less realistic degree. In other words, there are a few ways to do it.Al

Well, EFB does a lot more than displaying a map only, but if you just want to use THAT feature, it may indeed be too pricey then. What about the freeware Plan-G? You can connect it via Simconnect or FSUIPC and get the finest Google Maps with all aviation data as an overlay. You can donate if you like it since it offers far more than this too.

Once again, many Thanks Al.As always, I can count on you. In fact I do have the WIlco/feelThere 737 but it very rarely comes out of the hangar as there have been far better products than it for me to keep me occupied.

Yea, I am fully aware of what Aivalsoft's EFB can do. In fact I use every feature of it,adn very much like the feature where I can tune in the ATIS long before I hit my destination runway and thus can make changes to my STAR vectors, and would purchase it tomorrow if I did not feel that it was a wee bit too much to pay just for a piece of mapping software.Any suggestions are more than welcome as long as I can simultaneously use it in a windowed mode alongside the sim, which I can currently do with the EFB,instead of having to pause the flight and look elsewhere.Plan-G ended up screwing my FSX so much so that even Microsoft's technical support could not fix it as I related in a previous posting. In the end I had to re-install FSX and everything else. I don't fancy going down that road again.Nevertheless,Thank you.

Incidentally, it is Aivlasoft - not Aviasoft - everyone makes that mistake :( Al

Isn't EFB 25% cheaper at the moment due to them celebrating the award they won from simFlight and the iFly promotion, best get is quick while the offer is still on, it ends at the end of May I think.

Cheers, Andy.

Yup, you add the discount code 'EFB737' and you get 25 percent off.Al

Typos error on my side,Al. That's what happens when trying to type too fast.

Thanks all the same for that HU, but I'm aware of that offer having just bought the excellent iFly737NGX,but as they deal in Swiss currency, even with 25% off it's nearly £40, a figure I'd just about pay for an aircraft add-on. However, I'm sorely tempted but I've got my sights set on some or the ORBX reductions.

Rick Almeida

I would carefully consider the fact that whilst 40 quid is indeed a lot, you might regret having missed it at that price, since 50-odd quid is getting to the point where it becomes a bit painful. I balked at 50 quid when I looked at EFB a while ago, even though I liked the demo, and so the discount was when I pulled the trigger.Having said all that, I wouldn't mind betting Aivlasoft will roll out that deal again when the PMDG NG comes out, just so they don't appear partisan toward iFly, so it is probable that you'll get another chance at a discount when the other NG rolls out of its virtual hangar, and if that's a reasonable assumption, then you're not quite so against the clock as it might appear.Al

Another option is freeware from FSWidgets; see GMap 2.0 here: FS Widgets downloads
Thanks Al and Wayne. That discount is what is making me take one step forward to place the order, two backwards.I feel like a carp hooked on a bait in some cold 'n dark(oops, that pun!)remote lake in North Wales.

Rick, I debated for some time about the purchase of EFB from Aivlasoft given its price, but I finally took the leap (well before the latest discount offers!). No regrets here...it's a terrific tool for both flight planning and inflight information. I couldn't do without it now.

Hi Wayne. I have hummed and haa'd on this and as I write am using the Trial Version and I must say it is damn good, specially the bit where I can tune in the arrival ATIS and thus get which runway I should expect to land at so giving me time to re-program my FMC STAR, and am sorely tempted which I reckon might turn to a purchase. One question though? When using the Approach tab, does the space below where the grid box is to the left, show the descent path ala real-world Jeppsen chart? I was wondering had this been deliberately kept out of the Trial Version.

I'm not at my FSX machine, so I'm unclear of where you're referring to, but the descent path (beginning at the IAF) is shown along with altitude restrictions and vertical guidance.
