Strange glitch bedeviling FS9

Featured Replies

I'm curious, how many people experiencing this CTD are using Ultimate Traffic? I ask because the only times it happens on my (very high end) system is when I activate my traffic, and then only with UT installed... otherwise I never get a CTD.Best,Joel

I think we're seeing a pattern. These CTD events are occurring at specific spots, either with default or addon scenery. I do think Microsoft has to get involved in this one. In all the years of FS98, FS2000, and FS2002 I never experienced this. All those programs had addons galore. This is something new.I hope Microsoft reads the posts in these forums, or if someone knows one of the programmers, they could forward the locations for MS staffers to try out. This is not meant as a blast at MS, it's just that we love the program and we could use their help since they put it all together. I know this can be fixed. But how?Lee

Ok, I'm popping in.For the past two weeks I have HOPELESSLY been trying to take off from Zurich airport.Add-on scenery, default scenery, AI, no AI, default aircrafts, third-party aircrafts, default panels, third-party panels, you name it.NO CHANCE.No later than a couple of minutes after take off...CRASH TO DESKTOP.And sometimes it would be even worse; in best cases my machine would freeze on a blue screen reporting memory errors, in worst cases on a screen full of garbled signs accompanied by a loud and continuous noise, RESET required. So I started fiddling around, un-installing and re-installing everything possible, moving cards into different slots, changing drivers, but the CTD kept killing my flights.I refuse to believe it's a memory error. Everything has worked fine since now, and if the problem is related with memory, IT HAS TO DO WITH BAD PROGRAMMING WHITHIN THE SIM!And I'm afraid it's something complicated, because it must be a combination of time of the year, terrain, geographical area, and probably how aircraft instruments relate to all of these aspects.INFACT, the only way I was able to make my flight proceed further than the end of the runway, was by GETTING RID OF ALL LINES IN THE PANEL.CFG RELATING TO GAUGES, i.e. FLY THE PLANE WITH A DARK PANEL.Not anything you would want to do if not for testing purposes, because it is exactly what makes us so keen and proud about flight-simming: to be able to read all those complicated black circles with spinning hands and misterious signs and digits.SO, besides the fact that fs9 is getting very close to leaving my hard drive because it is WAY TOO FULL OF BUGS AND GRAPHICAL GLITCHES (please, take a look at the obsolete graphics engine!), MY VERY PERSONAL VERDICT on this last INSANE bug, is that it deeply lies whithin the new version of the sim and the way it was rushed to us poor but guilty (of excessive expectations, that is) customers. Please, stop justifying bugs by blaming them on add-ons.The simple truth, the truth nobody yet wants to hear, is that probably we will have to wait 'till 2006 to strt FLYING again. If we have the patience, that is!As far as I'm concerned, after ten hours spent flying against one thousand spent tweaking, it's pretty much definite frustration and dissatisfaction all way round.Best to all.luca

I also have just recently been getting CTDs, and I don't have any add-on scenery! Also, my CTDs have occurred while just setting up a flight in the menu, with a default plane. My only change that I can think of is the upgrades for UT, not including December flight plans, just SP2. I sometimes get the CTDs when I try and select Reality XP 530, however, the 530 worked fine all fall.Pretty irritating, and I think MS NEEDS to fix this!!Chris

We all need to keep our heads calm and cool and approach this methodically. There's a lot brains and creativity in our flight simming community. Maybe one of us will find a solution. Or, maybe MS will discover the glitch and offer a cure. If not, I applaud the gentleman at the German site who went a long ways to apply a cure. I have noticed less CTD occurrences since applying his fix. I am not sure it is the total answer yet.It also seems that certain commands trigger the CTD, not just the location. I've noticed a couple occurring upon going into spot view, answering ATC or going to a side or wing view.Could this be a Windows XP related problem, given all the new security updates we have had to install lately from Windows update? Perhaps Windows xp is just shutting down FS9.There are many avenues to explore.Lee

I can confirm this one, happened to me also at Hartford. A/C was at 33,000' southbound KBOS-KCLT. FSMeteo running, NO ATC. Just OK, let's stop now......I did go back, set up a whole new flight two days later and same results, so there is definitely a "black hole " there. No addons in that area.Ed GreenJust as an addenum after scrolling down, Ultimate Traffic was in use.

Qustion: Are you deleting the contents of Internet Explorers temp internet files before starting a flight? If you are seeig a repeated CTD, could you quit out, reboot Windows, empty the temp internet cache and then try reflying. There is mention of this in the readme and I wonder whether this goes back to the weather downloads?Allcott

Glad to see I'm not the only one getting random crashes.. I left my 737 on the runway at KSEA this afternoon in position, went to the fridge for a cold one, and as I came back down the hall I actually heard the windows XP shut down music... not only did the sim crash but it brought XP down with it.. I had 3 CTDs today AND I have the CTD fix installed.. I know it is NOT memory becasue I have several other games just as taxing as FS2004 that run without a problem at all. This is an MS issue, maybe in 2006 we'll get a fix. :-lol

Sure, I'll be glad to try it, but if that's what you have to do inorder to fly without CTD in what appears to be pretty specific and repoducable, then I kind of think that MS DOES have a problem.Ed

Well that will teach you Chris for getting a cold one when youshould be on the flightdeck! Wink!Peter Sydney Australia

I don't know about you fellow european simmers, (and maybe all others, as far as I'm concerned) but I CAN'T FLY ANYMORE.IT'S CTD's ALL OVER.No matter whether I have a clean install or not, no matter what fix I try, I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO GET OVER THE FIRST 10 MINUTES OF FLIGHT SINCE THE PAST TWO WEEKS.This crap has to stop.I won't even think about re-installing Windows all over.I don't have the time, nor the patience at this point. And from my past experience I'm quite sure it won't make a difference. The damn thing is just not working THE WAY IT SHOULD. And this time it's not just same strange graphical behaviour, IT'A A SERIOUS PROBLEM.For 15 days, with no success, I've been trying to lock down the cause of what's making fs9 COMPLETELY USELESS. I'm reallly running out of ideas, besides thinking of uninstalling this piece of junk from my computer.I'm close to claiming my money back.Sorry about my harshness but I think it's understandable, at this point.I'm mad and frustrated, and I hope i can share my feelings (some of them, at least) with you.luca

3 in 2 days :-fume2 trying to get out of Tel Aviv and I put that down to a scenery addon and another today flying west out of ENGM to ESSA. The latest one was with NO addon scenery and realtime weather running. On all three occassions, I have NEVER seen windows operate so quickly - CTD in a microsecond :-bluegrabANZ121

"On all three occassions, I have NEVER seen windows operate so quickly - CTD in a microsecond"NO KIDDING!THIS IS GETTING BEYOND FRUSTRATION. IT'S SIMPLY NERVE-WRECKING!There i sit like an idiot, in front of my panel, knowing exactly what kind of death is expecting me.And...PUFF!There it goes!Damn, this one sucks big time!luca :-8

I agree with Lurk. My schoolteacher would have described FS9 as 'a poor effort'. Apart from all this above (which I have not experienced myself cos I dont fly the thing much), the ATC is run by crazy people. I once got instructions to climb to FL1000! It chooses the wrong runway for the wind direction more often than not. You cannot use AI view, or Tower View on instant replay. And its soooo picky about graphics cards...and on...and on..and on. So there's not just one strange glitch but a whole heap of 'em! Anyone had any experience with X-plane? Maybe I'll stick with good 'ole FS2002 in the meantime.

Like I have said before - CTDs have not been a problem I have experienced EXCEPT when using add-on scenery that was defective.I probably fly at least 10-12 hours per week, all with FS2004.About ATC - why not abandon using robotic ATC and try something more llike the real thing by flying online with VATSIM - much more fun IMHO..Dave
