January 4, 200422 yr Commercial Member HI Dick,Yeah, that's pretty much how I do it. I have a generic "blank.raw" the size of an LOD5 quadrant to fill in where needed.I suspect the non-seasonal CTDs (and the "seasonal" as well) are coming from a change in the FS2004 terrain engine that isn't reflected in the old FS2002 resample.exe. I also suspect that once our INFs are processed with the new FS2004 resample.exe, the issue will disappear. Just a matter of the technology catching up with itself.Probably why MS hasn't addressed the issue with a patch. The "patch" will be provided in the new Terrain SDK.-------Justinhttp://www.fsgenesis.netHigh Quality Scenery for FS200x ________________ Justin - Toposim http://www.toposim.net
January 4, 200422 yr Author Hi Justin.I hope you're right! Here's a large LC I made for CFS2 to force tropical texures farther north and west in the pacific:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/56102.jpgYou an easily see how I trimmed the huge source drastically, and then let the "world" tranparent envelop the area to square it off. Works like a charm.Dick
January 4, 200422 yr Author Hi all."Now, I find the sim is never at fault. Never. There's too many people running fault-free. I would guess that less than 5% of FS9ers are having these types of problems, and they are either using addons ( or addons that were never removed properly ), or they have bad hardware ( usually memory sticks or a BIOS problem with the motherboard )."You'll have to excuse me while I prepare a large helping of crow to eat!I did find a CTD, and it is seasonal with NO addons ( November 21, 2003 ). LFMR_2.FLTI saved the flight and am attaching it in a zip file. I also then changed the season to a summer date, and NO CTD. LFMR_3.FLTGo figure!I'd appreciate if this could be confirmed by others. Then we'll send it off to Microsoft and see if they can respond to it.Also... if I turn my Terrain Texture Size down to medium, there is no crash. ( Texture or mipping problem? )Dick
January 4, 200422 yr No problem here-just tried it ....http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/Geofdog2.jpg Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!
January 4, 200422 yr Ciao, obviously I cannot give you the RAW and INF files used to create that BGL, 'cause I'me not the autor of this work! :-)But I believe you're on the right way.... actually I'm looking for CTDs with default scenery (ie no mesh or landpacks), but no luck till now...
January 4, 200422 yr Ciao,BINGOOOOO!!!! I got the crash!!!! And what a crash!!!! A system trap at 23% of loading... BUT the date was not correct... 21 november was still good here (ie no crash), I changed to 22 november and... CTDs... or better, system crasp... if you like to know:-che trap was in ati3d2ag.dll, a page fault in a non-paged areano crash with a lower texture quality... maybe everything is just due to a problem inside texture engine of Fs2004...
January 4, 200422 yr Ciao, unfortunatly I'm sad to say that this patch does not solve the problem of seasonal CTDs... maybe some other trouble... but on my pc this patch is next to useless... :-(
January 4, 200422 yr Commercial Member Dick, Confirmed, CTD at loading this flight, it crash with 0% Addons! But now:-If I set the texture size to medium, there is NO CTD-If I set the texture size to max it crash, there is CTD.If I use my addons mesh below, with texture to max there is NO CTDhttp://www.simviation.com/terrain.htmhttp://avsim.com/terrafish/All Orlando Mesh from avsim. It's between the mesh and texture, not sure who is the problems.I think it will be some texture, there is should be few texture or many that`s have error in the format, maybe the road or others texture I will check.-If it is not the texture, it will be the mesh related to the texture applied on top.-Or simply the Mesh Logicaly it should by the texture since texture size to med fix the problems.ThanksChris Willis[link:fsw.simflight.com/FSWMenuFsSim.html]Clouds And Addons For MsFs Kind RegardsChris Willis
January 4, 200422 yr Commercial Member Hi, Confirmed, it's not any BMP texture in fs2004 cause CTD-It's the mesh-Texture applied to the mesh-Or the texture size thingsThanksChris Willis[link:fsw.simflight.com/FSWMenuFsSim.html]Clouds And Addons For MsFs Kind RegardsChris Willis
January 4, 200422 yr DickI tried them and got a CTD at "Loading Terrain 50%" on the first one.I changed the Terrain Texture Size to Medium as Chris also did and it works OK, no CTD.The second works OK as is.The CTD put 3 entries in the Computer Management (compmgt.msc) Application Event Viewer. They are not very informative, at least not to me, as they state that the event id cannot be found. Someone else with more expertise may be able to tell something from them.I have never seen this type of crash with FS9 on my installation before this. I have gotten a few atc.dll abends, but that's a different matter. I have no land class or mesh addons for this area.
January 4, 200422 yr From other posts it appears that a temporary workaround is to set your Terrain Texture Size slider to Medium in the Display Settings dialog. Hopefully this will let people fly until we find out what's really happening.
January 4, 200422 yr Ciao,yess... that's correct. At least I can confirm that setting Terrain Texture size to medium I do not have any more CTDs in any critical places... till somebody founds a solution, this seems to be the only one workaround...
January 5, 200422 yr Author Hi arexx and all.Problems with default CTDs do seem to be cured by Joachim's terrain.cfg patch and textures.I had stated I thought these to be a "bandaid" solution... but it does cure the default CTDs I have tested ( pretty good bandaid ).It requires textures placed into the 'worldtexture' folder, and replacing the terrain.cfg with his example ( back that up first ). The textures will do no harm if simply left there. The old terrain.cfg can be restored if a problem arises.Do we know the root cause?... not yet, but the CTDs I checked in the defaults are due to seasonal changes and the AB files which are the airport background VTP2 polys ( delete the AB*.bgl for the area and the problem goes away ). As Joachim found, the polys are not the problem, but the special masking of the textures seems to be, and that is controlled by the terrain.cfg file. I don't know if all default CTDs are caused by this, but all I have checked are. http://jobia.bei.t-online.de/crashdes.htmAll this may seem a waste of time, as Holger and others have tread this path before, but I have been concerned about the lack of default examples that can be shared by FLT files. We need more FLT examples of the default seasonal CTDs to confirm.======================The Italypack landclass files have a problem unrelated to the default CTDs I have checked. There does seem something wrong with the BGL itself. Without the raw source and inf files, there seems little that can be done about it, except keeping the Terrain Texture setting to medium. That actually seems to discard the upper mip level of the textures... which leads to some blurring. But not much else can be done unless the author of the files decides to fix the problem.Dick
January 5, 200422 yr Bravo, folks....Congratulations for admitting what many of us have already confirmed, but some of you refused to acknowledge. Please remember that in the future, maybe give those who are having problems a bit more leeway before you start blaming the CTD's on them, instead of placing the blame where it squarely belongs. On Microsoft.I may not be able to unscramble code as well as some of you, but I know when it is not MY system and is the fault of the program. The Ball is squarely in Microsoft's court now.So I ask again,Where is my patch Microsoft? Also, Thank you for sticking with this and trying to work it out. Now, It makes me wonder if Microsoft has known about this and if so, why they have refused to even acknowledge it.Regards,Joe CryptoSonar on Twitch & YouTube.
January 5, 200422 yr Author Hi Joe.I believe Microsoft is aware of this, and there is a patch released...by Joachim. At this point, there would be no need for MS to fix what has already been fixed... other than for a few simmers to feel compensated by an admission of guilt by MS. And the only thing they are guilty of is trying to give us more illusion of realism. They didn't test all the seasonal changes? No. If they had checked every possible thing, we'd be waiting 100 years for the release of the game. My attitude towards bug-hunting is to find them and squash them... not just point the finger at the Design team. We seem to usually find a fix somehow. This seasonal CTD is not a dead issue yet. We should still see some FLT files saved to give this some better confirmation. And I do wonder if users of early versions of Justin Tyme's national landclass were experiencing the same problem, and if that can be fixed in the same manner. We also have other CTDs that are not related to seasonal changes, and I would love to see if those are repeatable on my computer. So far, no FLT and WX files have appeared.Dick
