Fog issue with ASE

Featured Replies

Hi, since i have installed the SP3 I am having bad issues with fog. The main issue is related to bad lines at the horizon and graphic artifacts. The issue is progressive (as showed in the attached pictures (the scenery is showed in a good way at the beginning (first picture), but after a few and in different steps the final reults are artifacts at the horizon like shown in the last picture). Untl the SP3 I did not have this issue (by the way the picture show a station reporting 6 miles for visibiity and I use the DWC mode)\) Any support is appreciated to understand what I do eventually wrong Thanks and best regards Joe

Hello, This does not appear to be related to ASE, but if you are not happy with the way FS renders low visibility you may wish to increase your Minimum Visibility in ASE options. Looking back I don't recall seeing the mountains obstructed in this way before (last pic), and ASE SP3 had no change that would affect such. Do you use a graphics add-on? Have you tried changing "sky" textures? These affect visibility depiction. Have you tried updating your video drivers? Really I do not think this has anything to do with our software, all ASE is doing is setting the visibility value here. Obviously the visibility is correct other than the way the far mountains are rendered here with the obstruction of visibility effect from FS. Perhaps other users have seen something like this before?

Hi, thanks for the replay. Effectively I have installed two new tools for to manage the shaders. Before I was using the Bojote Shader 3 Mods, but now I have installed and use FSWC (FS Water Configuration), but that should only modify the water reflection. The second one is a payware called Shade FSX that reshapes how the lights, shadows and fog appear, but for what I have red from its documentation if you do not activate it before to launch FSX nothing should be changed in FSX. The effect showed in the pictures appears even if I do not activate the two add-ons, but in the reality I have noticed it after the installation of these two products. About the sky textures I use FEX and my NVidia drivers are the 275.33 that reading around the forums should be one of the best for FSX. Is it possible to know what I should check in FSX to verify if something has been changed (i.e fog textures?) or should I try to completely reinstall ASE? Thanks again for the support and best regards Joe

Hello again, If you are using shader mods, really I cannot be of help here, I am not very familiar, but it does sound like a factor. One thing I can suggest though is that you "clear" your shader cache after making any disable/enable changes, otherwise such changes might not be reflected. I'm hoping someone with more experience in this matter can chime in?

Hi, thanks again for the support. I have flushed several times the shader cache and also executed some tests not running ASE and using instead the FSX weather engine without any result. This should confirm that the issue is not related to ASE. Reading other topics around the forums I'm thinking that the issue could be caused by something wrong in the file cirrus_overcast03 that for what i have understood is the texture managing the haze. I will try testing the one in ASE manually copying it in FSX. Any other possible suggestion will be more than welcome BR Joe

Hi Joe, cirrus_overcast03 is indeed the texture that ASE uses for "disabling the FS haze layer". This texture is chosen by FS to depict the "haze layer ring". When "Disable FS Haze Layer" is checked, we copy our "transparent" cirrus_overcast03 texture over so that the FS depiction is hidden... When unchecked, we copy back the original one that existed before ASE first enabled this option. It's worth noting that your depiction mode and vis smoothing option has an affect here. When DWC and vis smoothing is enabled, the vis ceiling is all the way up around 90K feet, where the "haze layer" would be depicted (but is hidden by disabling haze layer). When DWC or Vis Smoothing is off (i.e. Standard or Smooth Cloud Transition depiction mode), the vis ceiling is at about 3000ft.Given that, you may be able to isolate this issue by toggling your mode here. If you're not in DWC with vis smoothing enabled, please try that, and vice-verse. Interested in your results!

HI, after to have tried several options and a lot of othe thinks, I have decide to uninstall ASE and reinstall it... and everything has been solved in that way !!!! I reaslly would like to know what went corrupted.. may be I failed to installe the last build? Thanks for the support and cheers Joe

Hi Joe... I'm thinking maybe a mis-sync of graphics textures and/or options affecting textures (haze disable). But really not sure!

Isn't it so, that you have to copy "cirrus_overcast" again into the texture folder after playing around with REX textures? Whenever I set somehing in REX with new textures (I just use REX for textures) I copy back again the ASE "cirrus_overcast". Maybe this could be the issue?

Hi, doing more tests in reality the issue comes out again and is still more evident if I use the ASE texture. The issue is more evident, when the visibility is limited, in airports close to the mountain (like LIME): when ASE ends to depict the weather the mountains more close to the horizon turn completely white looking really horrible and unreal. I have also fully reinstalled all my textures and really do not know what to do now Yawn.gif

Have you disabled and re-enabled the "Disable FS Haze Layer" option, to reset this texture after making any theme installs? Does this have an effect? This assumes you are using the Disable haze layer option. If not using this, then it should not be related to this feature (option always off). We can do some in-depth analysis and troubleshooting on this with you via our helpdesk to get to the bottom of this (www.hifitechinc.com support button - please send your logs and all system info including all used add-ons). Still not sure exactly what is happening, and this seems isolated at this point, but there may be a problem in our software or in the interaction between it and other graphics add-ons in this regard, perhaps related to specific options, FSX configuration, tweaks, etc. Through in-depth troubleshooting I'm sure we'll figure it out.

Hi, I have disabled / enabled the oprion and manually copied or deleted the cirrus_overcast03. I will use the support as you suggest sending you all the inof and sending the config and log files. Thanks a lot for the support Best regards Joe

Thanks Joe, we've received your information and will be investigating fully on Monday. I'll post relevant results of this on this thread in case it helps others who may experience the same thing.

Would love to read what you come up with, as I have noticed this fog layer issue. Would you want any info from my set up? Andrew

Hello Andrew, The problem in this case turned out to be usage of a certain graphics add-on package. Not using that add-on made the problem go away. We suspect it was due to unexpected results with that graphic's SKY COLOR and/or OVERCAST CIRRUS textures. We recommend that when using graphics add-ons and experiencing strange effects with fog/haze or visibility, you try different types of graphics and perhaps even restore the original graphics to isolate the problem.
