add on livery, wheres the .ptp?

Featured Replies

Hi long time no see, anyway Ive had the best time in fsx ever. The NGX is amazing! But I have a problem with add on liveries. I cant seem to get them. First is the pmdg .ptp ment to be a word file? I download it from pmdgs site and once its done I get a word file with strange things written in it. Is that ment to be there? Thanks for now

The .ptp files are NOT installers. They just contain the information the Livery Manager will need to install the liveries. That's a new approach PMDG is taking towards livery instalation, which is MUCH better that running installers, also because now you can install all you liveries at once instead of running each installer at a time. You can access the Livery Manager via the Start menu, inside the NGX folder. When it opens, click on "Select Livery to Install" and select the .ptp files you downloaded. More information on the Livery Manager can be found in the Introduction manual.

So download them again. Create a folder on the desktop or someplace else where you want to store the .ptp files and place them there. The Livery Manager is the only way to install the liveries. It's probably the only application that can read and extract files from a .ptp. You can find all the information you need about the Livery Manager on the Introduction Manual, beginning on page 0.00.126.

The most important thing everyone is forgetting to ask/tell you is that you first have to unzip the rar file to extract the ptp file. The installer will not see them in the zipped format. Unpack/unzip the rar liveries to a folder, then point the livery manager to that folder, it will then find the ptp file.

No, no Word docs in sight. Maybe .ptp is recognised as an extension that also means something (else) to Word. Word could well try and open if you just doubleclick it in that case. You should, download the file to a known location, unzip or unrar it if required. If it has a .zip filename, thats easy just right clcik and select unzip from the menu. If it has .rar extender thats tougher you'd need to google find and download 'WinRar' free trail or such to unpack it. All AVSIM downloads are .zip others I don't know. Then from your Windows Start menu / Programs find PMDG Simulations, click, see PMDG NGX. click, see Livery Manager, click, that'll open the livery manager, see 'To Install a Livery' click the button. That opens a file requester navigate to where you have the .livery.ptp file, select it, click the Open button on the file requester --- that should install your livery.

After you 'extrract' the file from the zipped folder by right clicking and selecting extract to . . . assuming you are using win7, you have to point the Livery Manager to the liverery location and that means inside the unzipped folder where the actual file resides. If you put several livery files together in one location (same folder) then the Livery Manager will install all of them in a series of installations - maybe a minute or so. Ray

Somehow zip files have been associated with the Microsoft Word application on your PC. When you click on a zip file they should open in a Windows Explorer folder, not Microsoft Word. The easiest way to resolve this is to download and install WinRAR from this link: http://www.rarlab.com/rar/wrar401.exe. WinRAR is an extremely popular, small and harmless utility that can extract the contents of zip files. During the installation, allow it to associate .zip files with the program, this means that it will open zip files instead of Microsoft Word. You will notice the icon for the downloaded livery files will now be a stack of books instead of the MS Word icon. Double click on the livery file and drag the .ptp file from the archive to the desktop. You can now use the PMDG livery manager to browse to your desktop and select the .ptp file. You can delete the .ptp file from your desktop once it has been installed (but keep the downloaded livery file in case you wish to re-install it again later. Hope this helps! PS. It might help if you display file name extensions on your PC, follow this article: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Show-or-hide-file-name-extensions

Those are not Word files, your computer only thinks they are. You're viewing the contents of .ptp files which aren't meant to be opened like that, they're not executables like the 744 liveries were. All you need to do is open the PMDG Livery Manager & add those liveries.

I think I misunderstood your original problem. Download winzip or winrar (any archiving utility) and try opening it with that first. Then you'll have the ptp file.
