Trees? You asked for them- new screens

Yup - lot's of trees make a huge difference to create a realistic look. I'm not sure however if I like the decission to make them bigger than reality to better fill the gaps. It sometimes looks a bit odd like in http://www.x-plane.com/wp/wp-content/gallery/forests/baron_58_10.jpg.Also I wonder why some trees are crossed billboards and some are only plain (see http://www.x-plane.com/wp/wp-content/gallery/forests/baron_58_13.jpg). I don't know how to say that - I hope you understand what I mean. Viewed from top some are + and some are only |. That is something I already wondered in V9. I think it might look even denser when all trees where crossed. But maybe that has something to do with performance.

These trees that seem to represent forest trees, unfortunately look way too large. sad.png I know in many forested areas, trees can grow to be quite large, but the scale of these look quite out of proportion. I do think, however, that the scale of the trees in the urban and suburban areas look correct, which is good and just hope that these forest trees are a version 9 remnant that will be reworked to something fitting the quality of everything else in the xp10 title, which to me has been impressive.

I think the tree bark is the wrong texture.

Does X plane have a file where one can tweak stuff? I would think the tree size issue is no biggie to tweak to one's liking. I am new to X Plane and find the screen shots look great, but some good points are being raised. The trees look a tad large beside the homes, not a deal breaker though.

Yes, the forests can be tweaked (as essentially all artwork in X-Plane can). There is an abstraction layer between the scenery and artwork. The scenery only knows, that a given forest stand (essentially a polygon) is associated with a so called FOR file (forest definition file). How that given forest looks in the end is defined in that file (each forest type has its own - X-Plane 10 will know about 260 different types). It defines the textures used, the size variations, the random distribution of trees etc. ...And no, we didn't take the definitions and textures from XP9, but from my big - and quite successful at that time (and I think still in XP9) - forest scenery packs which I did for the USA and Europe (see : www.alpilotx.net ). But, this is only to have a nice starting point as customizing forests is quite time consuming (and I am sure you agree, that there are worse approaches). Over time we will for sure invest a bit to tweak the forests more (there is even chatter inside about completely revamping forests - but no exact plans or time lines until now ... so don't ask).

What, I've had xplane for 2yrs and thought your trees were (logically?) included as default!! They're not?! Ok, going there now..Re shading of trees, you could go in and adjust in an image editor, although a .for of only one tree would be hard

Not sure if anyone checked but you can see other screenshots by going back a directory. http://www.x-plane.com/wp/wp-content/gallery/I'm really starting to like the lights in the night shots. Especially since I fly at night 80 percent of the time in FSX.

Is someone "barking" up the wrong tree. Groan..... I am allowed to tell corny jokes, I'm middle aged!

I did ask for cats and dogs in the next sim.
