December 18, 201114 yr The FAA authorizes pilots to replace their paper chart binders with iPads. CNN Video.Rovio Mobile to develop a TSO'd version of Angry Birds for cockpit use (game pauses automatically when GS Alive),I suppose they'll be velcroing the iPads to the control yokes?Cheers,- jahman.

December 18, 201114 yr Alaska airlines and many other 135 operators have had them for awhile now. We save nearly 100 pounds in paper and leather with them out now. Chris Miller
December 18, 201114 yr I would rather have my stuff on paper,, what if your ipad fails/breaks/batt dies? And you have none of your paperwork? Ill pass,, I mean its a great feature to have, but I would never rely on it. -Sean L PPL + IFR, SEL HP/Complex.. LAS WN Ground Ops
December 18, 201114 yr Then I go to my iPhone-and I've had paper fall to a place I couldn't get to it before too. I still print out extra approach plates though. Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!
December 18, 201114 yr Hello everyone. If any pilot uses a single source of information, electronic or paper, will eventually run into trouble, especially IFR in IMC. I've seen pilots run into serious problems by not having access to information.Eventually the PIC is responsible for the flight and having getting ALL the information needed / available. Have a Great Holidays everyone. TV
December 18, 201114 yr Amazing how the rules change when money is involved.Regardless of whether it effect airline saftey.''yeh...dont worry about it, we're making money!'' Regards Luke M
December 18, 201114 yr There are many back ups to still use. If Everything goes down then you can ask the controllers to help. What would happen if you spilled your drink on your paper plate? That's dangerous I'm not flying with paper anymore! Chris Miller
December 19, 201114 yr Perhaps if the PF and PNF each have their own iPad they would have enough redundancy fo a "fail operational". With a single iPad could print-out back-up charts charts on a portable printer or at the terminal before boarding.Cheers,- jahman.
December 19, 201114 yr We have two iPads, plates on the MFD and the approaches are in the database of the GPS. If those all fail you have more to worry about. Chris Miller
December 19, 201114 yr This is great news, two ipads do allow enough of a fail safe.Im stilled heated about the tone used in the video though :( , electronics and passengers during critical phases of flight do not mix. Also mr news man, GPS is the primary source of navigation for many airliners now. OK rant over, sorry. Tom "I just wanna tell you both: good luck. We're all counting on you."

Also mr news man, GPS is the primary source of navigation for many airliners now. OK rant over, sorry. He has a point though, and he knows of the exceptions. He really is an expert, no kidding. His point is that the BS about phones and other devices interfering with navigation equipment need to be put to rest. Although without that little rule, I'll have one less thing to boss passengers around about... ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
December 19, 201114 yr ...I'll have one less thing to boss passengers around about...Remember, you can always call "Turbulence!" into the mike and then yank around the aircraft at your pleasure.Cheers,- jahman.
December 19, 201114 yr If only there were a "like" button around this place. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
