FAA Authorizes iPad Use in Cockpits to Replace Paper Charts

Featured Replies

The FAA authorizes pilots to replace their paper chart binders with iPads. CNN Video.Rovio Mobile to develop a TSO'd version of Angry Birds for cockpit use (game pauses automatically when GS Alive),I suppose they'll be velcroing the iPads to the control yokes?Cheers,- jahman.

Alaska airlines and many other 135 operators have had them for awhile now. We save nearly 100 pounds in paper and leather with them out now.

I would rather have my stuff on paper,, what if your ipad fails/breaks/batt dies? And you have none of your paperwork? Ill pass,, I mean its a great feature to have, but I would never rely on it.

Then I go to my iPhone-and I've had paper fall to a place I couldn't get to it before too. I still print out extra approach plates though.

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!

Hello everyone. If any pilot uses a single source of information, electronic or paper, will eventually run into trouble, especially IFR in IMC. I've seen pilots run into serious problems by not having access to information.Eventually the PIC is responsible for the flight and having getting ALL the information needed / available. Have a Great Holidays everyone. TV

Amazing how the rules change when money is involved.Regardless of whether it effect airline saftey.''yeh...dont worry about it, we're making money!''

There are many back ups to still use. If Everything goes down then you can ask the controllers to help. What would happen if you spilled your drink on your paper plate? That's dangerous I'm not flying with paper anymore!

Perhaps if the PF and PNF each have their own iPad they would have enough redundancy fo a "fail operational". With a single iPad could print-out back-up charts charts on a portable printer or at the terminal before boarding.Cheers,- jahman.

We have two iPads, plates on the MFD and the approaches are in the database of the GPS. If those all fail you have more to worry about.

This is great news, two ipads do allow enough of a fail safe.Im stilled heated about the tone used in the video though :( , electronics and passengers during critical phases of flight do not mix. Also mr news man, GPS is the primary source of navigation for many airliners now. OK rant over, sorry.

"I just wanna tell you both: good luck. We're all counting on you."

He has a point though, and he knows of the exceptions. He really is an expert, no kidding. His point is that the BS about phones and other devices interfering with navigation equipment need to be put to rest. Although without that little rule, I'll have one less thing to boss passengers around about...
