Moving Cloud Shadows....Still?

Featured Replies

Just got the latest update and I'm still experiencing the moving cloud shadows when panning around. Is this a common problem that is being addressed? I keep hoping with each update that it gets fixed. It's quite a distraction in an otherwise wonderful simulation. Is this related to a driver or something else? Thanks,Scott

Scott,It would seem it happens to some and not to others. I have the moving shadows topped off with lighting that dims itself randomly. It is annoying and I do hope they can come up with the culprit that is causing it. Probably a GPU driver-related problem.

Thanks for the reply, Mike. We're both running Nvidia....and the driver I am using is several months old. What driver are you using? Anyone here running Nvidia and not experiencing this?

Scott

I don't get the moving cloud shadows (or at least they're not obvious), but I do get the random changes in light intensity. I'm running Linux with an nVidia card.

Scott,I'm using the 285.62 drivers. I think there is a newer beta out, but I'll pass for now unless someone using it can confirm it fixes these issues without breaking something else.@ MM,Are you doing a dual boot, win7 Linux? What drivers for the nVidia?

Yeah, dual boot, but I'm running XP10 exclusively in Linux. Latest stable drivers through Kubuntu are 280.13.

I have the issue with the demo, running with an nV GTX 260 - Had it on the older driver set 258.96, and still have it on the most recent production drivers 285.62.... the shadows seem to "roll" across the landscape as if they are tied to the airplane movement, and not the clouds and earth.

Greg,Exactly what is happening to us. It would seem we all use an nVidia card, so this may be a clue. I hope it's a simple solution. The next beta was due yesterday, I guess they wanted to add something they felt was important.

Having issue on GT 540M (laptop) with 285 drivers and 9800GTX with 292 beta drivers, both in win7 64. Don't see the cloud shadows moving much (sometimes) but more noticable extreme banks of 45 degrees or more.

Aaron,So no real problems using beta 292 drivers? I might give them a try then. Do you get any outside light intensity changes, like everything suddenly becomes overcast?

haven't noticed, but haven't been flying much as I've been working on a program to plan out my projection setup and it's nearing the useful stage where I can put in my details and it will spit out the data I've been waiting a week and a half for.And I always upgrade to the Betas on my main rig, mostly as I run BF3 and Skyrim and they seem to have a big part in the updates. Graphics-wise, I don't have shadows enabled other than the very basic ones and I have been usually flying in non-cloudy or complete overcast conditions. I did notice a few times with scattered or broken clouds, it seemed that the ground popped to a darker form, then I'd see the shadows floating. Once I leveled out and made shallow normal turns, didn't see much that I can recall. I'll try to pay attention more if I get back in the pit soon.

If I was flying with clouds, and the wind was blowing, I would expect the clouds to move. The changes in light from darker to brighter is what happens if the cloud gets between you and the sun. If that didn't happen I would expect a lot of people to be griping about how unrealistic the sim is. Not seeing different light intensities. LOL :-) Doesn't that seem reasonable?

I get this when banking and turning, but I have an AMD 6790 with 12.1 preview drivers...

The only way to properly reproduce this problem is to go to chase view then spin the view around the aircraft exterior by left clicking with the mouse and dragging on the screen. Weather conditions need to have broken clouds, overcast is not going to show the effect. The brightness level changing in the cockpit has nothing to do with simulating passing through a God Ray, again you can easily reproduce it by panning the view in the VC, the sudden brightness shift happens in the exact same place every time you pan back and forth.

Cheers, Andy.

If one has to jump out of the plane and do this and that in order to see it is not a crepuscular ray, it doesn't seem to me to be much of a problem. Money%20Eyes.gif
