February 19, 200422 yr Back in 6th grade, I played a MS Flight Simulator numerous times during lunch break.I can't exactly remember which version it was, but I think it was either FS4 or FS5. It certainly wasn't FS95.You would always start out in Meigs Field and it had an aircraft similar to the X-15, but it was fictional. I remember it was extremely fast, and could climb into the air extremely quickly. I'm not sure if it was rocket-powered (like the X-15) or if it was jet-powered. Then again, back on those days, it didn't really matter. :)Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
February 20, 200422 yr FS4! At this time, the sim also included an aircraft editor, in which you can change the wing profile, thrust ratio etc...!
February 20, 200422 yr Hmm- sure it wasn't the ol' Chuck Yeager flight sim? I tend to remember this program, I flew it a while but went back to FS :)http://www.c64unlimited.net/games/c/Chuck%...20Simulator.htm
February 20, 200422 yr FWIW could it have been Jet by Sublogic? What year were you in the 6th grade? That would help.Todd
February 20, 200422 yr I am positive that it was a Microsoft Flight Simulator.I was in 6th grade from 1997-1998. It was an old computer sitting in the back of my teacher's classroom.Yes I remember the Aircraft Editor! And no, it wasn't Chuck Yeager's Air Combat by EA. Boy, that was a fun sim though!Regards
February 20, 200422 yr Neither FS4 nor FS5 had a rocket powered plane. Both did default to the Meigs airport, but the default aircraft was the 182RG.FS5 and FS95 looked somewhat similar, and this is what FS4 looks like:http://www.pbase.com/image/25227968/original.jpg
February 20, 200422 yr As JeanLuc stated, FS4 had an aircraft designer and some kind of experimental Jet included. I'm pretty sure, that's the one you mean.Wolfgag
February 20, 200422 yr Wow Jim,That pic sure brought back some memories. My first flightsim was Sublogic Flight Simulator by Bruce Artwick, I think the forerunner of the MSFS. That was on a PCXT 4.77Mhz with dual floppies and Herculese graphics card. Jeez, did I spend some time on that baby. Also remember having to get a friend to copy my FS3 disk from a 3.5' to 5.25" floppy because I didn't realise that I had bought the smaller disk version and the other was at least 3 weeks away to swap.Cheers and thanks again.Chris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern AustraliaMy "Around the World 4" flight pagehttp://members.iinet.net.au/~portercbp/fly...e%20World_4.htm Core i7 3820 | Asus P9X79-DELUX SLI M/b | 32GB Corsair DDR3 1600Mhz RAM | DeepCool Gemmaxx CoolernVidia GTX580 1536MB GDDR3 Video | ASUS MW221u 21" WS LCD2 x Kingston V300 240gb SSD RAID for OS and FSX | 2 x Seagate Barracuda 1Tb SATA HD's in RAID | 1 x 1Tb ext b/up driveAntec P193 Case | Corsair 1000W PSU | MS Win 7 Professional 64 BitMy website and aviation photo gallery - www.christopherbporter.com
February 20, 200422 yr I'd like to suggest something (ok, call me crazy afterwards... :-)Why don't we take a screenshot of ALL MS flight sims at the same place (rwy 36 at Meigs with same aircraft) and post it on a thread or screenshots area?I think it'll be a lot of fun to see how FS evolved over time up to FS9 and we could have it documented...
February 20, 200422 yr You know, I was thinking exactly the same thing, it would be really cool to see the evolution of this hobby in one place. It is really funny how, at the time, I thought that FS4 was the most awesome piece of computer programming and how great it was to live in a time that we could use such a technically advanced piece if equipment. I did wish that the graphics were better but I never thought that it would come this far. Anyone one who played FS back then, could you foresee the advancements that we have today, can you imagine what FS will be like 15 to 20 years from now? Anyway maybe if we could get pics from all of the versions of FS we could get Avsim to put them in order for everyone to see, it would be historically interesting. February 20, 200422 yr >Anyone>who played FS back then, could you foresee the>advancements that we have today, can you imagine what FS will>be like 15 to 20 years from now? I can see it now, FS2020: Holodeck Edition. :-lol I think the program in question if FS4. I remember there being a fictional aircraft that they tossed into the program. I had the box but I think it got tossed by accident. I wish I could find the disks so I could boot it up on my Mom's old computer. I had FS4 for Mac, which I believe was the last FS version for Macintosh ever made.
February 20, 200422 yr How about Sinclair Spectrum? Straight line to show horizon, circles to show lakes, 3 digital readouts Hdg,speed.alt (who needs more?) and that was green lines and black screen.I spent days on this!C64, Atari 1020ST all had some Sublogic version.I never complain about what I see in Fs9, I am still in Awe!
February 21, 200422 yr >I think it'll be a lot of fun to see how FS evolved over time>up to FS9 and we could have it documented...There's a 'FS History' dedicated website right here :http://www.simflight.com/~fshistory/fsh/timeline.htmIt's run by a dutch guy, Jos Grupping, who is trying to get the whole FS picture together. Not an easy task so it seems... why don't we all try to help him out ? Ronald : Sinclair Spectrum ? 48K ? You bet ! Bought it because of a program called 'Nightflight' . Great choice of title because everything was pitch black except 2 rows of 8 white dots ( could've been even 10... ) depicting the runway. A crudely drawn artificial horizon,ADF, altimeter and airspeed indicator were the means to help you find your way in the darkness. Very exiting to see them white dots turn up, great fun ! As far as ik know here's where it all began. :DJan
February 21, 200422 yr Jan,Yep from black & white dots in 1984 FsII, with 8 colours and 4 instruments. This is why I bought the C64 and then Atari!Oh God did I say 1984? 20 years! 20 years of killing (sorry teaching) adolescent kids and coming home to 'relax' as I have permantly opened computer attempting to get that extra 1 fps. Yep we aint changed!(lol)Now to sit and 'fly' the world, with superb scenery rendition, (Innsbruck still blows me away) in a customised 737 zillion colour screen with stereo everything. 20 Years? Its amazing what has changed.I joined Compuserve earliest FsForum and ended up advising others about what I hadn't a scoobies of whatI was doing!Yep, no change.
February 21, 200422 yr How about final flight-starting with the vic 20 in 1981- a single line on the screen (runway) and a word saying "you Landed" or "you crashed" -graduating to fs1 , jet on the commodore 64-then the amiga.I got my private using fs4-and thought it was a great tool then. (It was).Sure puts things in perspective! How far we have come-and oddly the complaining is more than when we had so little-for the same price I might add?!http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/rxp-pilot.jpg Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!
