January 27, 201214 yr I was telling a coworker today that I've been getting more OOM's especially in Orbx land. He recommended turning off the page file (I think.. or something to do with the PF).Wouldn't this be a bad idea? Also, does anyone have any recommendations to stop OOM's other than turning down settings? | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |

Although, P3D might be implenting 64Bit architecture in the far future. Edited January 27, 201214 yr by benorg

January 27, 201214 yr RyanThe paging file has nothing to do with OOM's  . OOM's are due to the fact that the 4GB of VAS (NOT physical RAM or paging file) become defragmented or depleted. As benorg says OOM's are a limitation of 32-bit software even running on a 64-bit OS.IMHO it is a bad idea to remove the paging file as the Physical RAM (simply) uses it to cache data etc as well as other Windows functions (eg hard page faults). The size of the paging file is still contentious but with big modern HDDs it really doesn't matter what size you choose. I let Windows do it for me. It does get defragmented over time and some defrag programs can defragment it too. As an aside I have been looking at a registry hack that prevents VAS fragmentation but at the moment it is no better than using say an "Autosave" function every 2 or 3 minutes. This hack uses the 'HeapDecommitFreeBlockThreshold ' pointer at various values but I cannot find a value that works consistently.RegardsPeterH
January 27, 201214 yr It got me thinking: MAYBE swap file is causing more defragmentation of the VAS and possibly a high(er) VAS usage. The OOM itself happens when VAS has reached 4GB.I never did a really consecutive test with or without swap. But if you have enough RAM (8GB+), does it hurt to try it out?

As we're all aware only some programs require PF. I'll be switching mine off now and testing. Also, I don't see this benefiting us either. At all. January 27, 201214 yr I had it off on my old system with 8 GB RAM and it seemed that this reduced the shutters a lot and made all somehow smoother. I never had any OOM's whatsoever. Best regards, Steffen Fight time: NGX 737-700: 37,0h; -800: 47,2h
January 27, 201214 yr Ever since I got 4GB of RAM have I been running without swap. Never ever a problem. I'll be switching mine off now and testing. Please tell us your experience. It's impossible to measure the fragmentation though.
January 28, 201214 yr Welp. It's 26 hours later and I've had no issues (not that I suspected any). FSX performance is the same (didn't suspect it wouldn't be). I'll dig this thread up if I have issues relating to PF being off. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules

January 29, 201214 yr I don't personally recommend turning off the page file. It shouldn't be getting hit at all with FS running under normal operation if you've got enough physical RAM installed (6+ GB), but it is used under some abnormal conditions, such as a bluescreen crash. Kind of a boring subject, really! If you want to run with it off and have a stable system and 8GB+ memory, go for it. You'll get no benefits. If you want it enabled, have at it! ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
January 29, 201214 yr Author Are you guys even getting OOM's? The only time I get them is in Orbx Land.
