Getting The Most Accurate Winds to the FMC

Featured Replies

I want to help the FMC out as best As I can with Winds Aloft information. The only place I know to enter in Winds aloft is on the Perf Init page, is there anywhere else? Also what is the easiest ways to find ACCURATE winds aloft for specific routes, I am using Active sky 2012 does it tell you those winds? Thanks Evan Thrams

I believe if you create a flight plan in AS 2012 it'll give you the winds aloft data along your route, what part or parts of the world are you looking for winds aloft data?

Go to the legs page and the next page will let you input winds. set your flight plan in 2012 and print out the log it has the winds aloft. I send the flight plan to fsx with my flight planning software.Hope this helps,Don Emerson

besides the above mentioned ones, also have a look at the descent->des forecast page. you can enter winds at various altitudes (all this info is in the as2012 report) to increase the precision of the top of descent calculation.cheers-andy crosby

Which waypoint along your decent should someone use as a reference for your winds. If the descent is a few tenths of miles then the winds might be totally different between the beginning of the decent and the end near the arrival airport.

To be honest, entering the average wind speed on the PERF INIT page is going to get you similar results as entering it fix by fix. ActiveSky will give you both pieces of information (a route average and fix by fix) provided you use the Briefing function. The average takes a lot less time, but is really just as accurate.Aviation is run by numbers. We have numbers for everything, but don't get lost in the details. Precision is nice, but nothing is ever perfect. The forecast said one thing, and it'll actually be something else. Even the reported weight for your passengers and bags are averaged (every passenger is 165 and a bag 35 - depending on the airline). The point is to be close, not exact, as aviation deals with two highly variable elements: people, and weather.

Don't get hung up on putting the winds into the FMC - it will take into account current wind anyway. Most times you'll be taking over from the aircraft anyway in descent at some point so anything you enter will be moot.Best regards,Robin.
