FSX & FS9 on the same machine?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, this has been a question of mine for some time now but have never gotten around to asking anyone. One of the main things I find frustrating with FSX, despite all the bugs, is how there is no decent 777 on it. Until PMDG comes out with their model which is still some time away i've been thinking about installing fs9 onto my machine and flying the T7 on that. As well as having great graphics and frames because of my specs. Would there be any problems having both on the same machine? Should I run FS9 on one Windows 7 account and FSX on the other to make it cleaner? Thanks for the help guys :)

Nope - you will REALLY complicate things if you do that!: just make another directory called 'FS9' or something like that, and then custom install it to that folder. Don't install into C:Program Files(86).e.g.'C:Flight Simulator X' and 'C:Flight Simulator 9' ...or... 'C:FSX' and 'C:FS9', or both on the 'D' drive, or... one on one drive the other on another drive... doesn't matter.

I run FS9 and FSX on my machine. They're installed to their own hard drives but there are no problems whatsoever.

Currently my FSX file is located under C:Program Files (x86), Microsoft Games, Flight Simulator XSo are you saying if i install fs9 i should install it straight under C: and then FS9?

FAA Multi Commercial Pilot/Flight Instructor

You should uninstall FSX and re-install it under C:FSXYes, a custom install to C:FS9 or some easy path.

Absolutely. And I would move FSX out of the Program Files (x86) directory as well. The file redirection that is done with anything installed in a "Program Files*" directory in Vista/W7 will cause many, many headaches. The redirection can't be disabled, either.

Can I just drag my whole FSX file into C:

Can I just drag my whole FSX file into C:
No, that won't work at ALL. WIndows (the registry) won't know where FSX is anymore and your addons (if you have any) will be screwed up too. Whatever you do, don't do THAT! :wink:Do you have many addons or do you fly FSX rather out of the box? In case of the latter and if all is working fine, you might leave it as it is. But if you do have addons and/or plan to buy (more) addons and install things and uninstall things etc. etc. etc. it's wiser to reinstall (after a COMPLETE uninstall!) FSX into the top directory of any drive (C: or D: Or E: etc.)P.S. There are utilities that, so they say, will fix the registry when you move FSX around, but trust me: it won't work. It may work a little, but in the end will have to reinstall anyway. I tried it once: never again. :(

.. and when you do uninstall FSX - first copy the whole thing to some safe spot, as the FSX root contains some 'nice to keep' files - like your WaterConstants.xml for e.g. 'Modules' contains your FSUIPC.ini. The files outside should be moved, too, as they will be over-written by the fresh install...C:Users(your user_id)DocumentsFlight Simulator X Files, (which contains your logbook.bin), then your ...C:Users(your user_id)Application DataMicrosoftFSX (which contains your exe.xml, the dll.xml, the Cameras.cfg, your standard.xml and so on.. lots of good files..THEN unistall it, and then go in and delete all of the folders completely. After this, run a registry cleaner to ensure no problems if the registry doesn't "like' the new install. THEN reboot and install. There's a lot of experience above telling you something....... :(

Co-incidentally, I was about to ask a similar, related question. I'm familiar with all of the above advice, but my situation is slightly different in that I have FSX in a custom directory, D:FSX, and I keep this machine JUST for FSX. It has nothing else on it by design, other than FSX and a gazillion add-ons. It's running great like that and I really don't want to upset it.However, because I have a love for the classic era, and because there's so much good stuff for that which is FS9-native, I also have FS9 on another machine. However, swapping all the home cockpit stuff around when I want to change eras is a pain, so I thought about going back to a dual FSX/FS9 install on the FSX machine, which is a more recent and more powerful device. However, I'd heard that the order they're installed in is important and that FS9 should be installed first otherwise certain registry pointers get screwed. Anyone got any comment on that?Cheers,Andy

No, the order of install does not make a difference.

I have decided I don't really want to have to completely uninstall fsx and move it to the C drive because of how long it takes, But I do still want FS9, can I install fs9 straight to the C drive or do i HAVE to uninstall fsx first and move it also?

There's a few key files I back up to make FSX re-installation quicker.
  • C:UsersUserNameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftFSXControlsStandard.XML
  • The FSUIPC files in my Modules folder.
  • EZDok Camera list. (.ECS files exported via the EZDok program)

The rest (GEX, AS2012, UTX) takes <1hr. Heck, I reinstalled last night. My installation is pristine again.
