February 20, 201214 yr Commercial Member Not sure what you think you need SLI 580s for - that requires a 1KW+ power supply and is generally major overkill unless you're running at huge resolutions on a 30" display or something. A single GTX580 will run basically any game there is maxed. I play BF3 maxed on my 570 at 1920x1200 and it's great.FSX is much more dependent on CPU than GPU anyway - I wouldn't hold my breath that a 580 is going to solve all your problems there. February 22, 201214 yr I'm gonna buy the EVGA GTX 580 DS Superclocked very shortly! Let's hope it will reduce the famous FSX stuttering effect for me. is this the same Arjen who 's just bought the 560Ti I'm sure you said that a new card wouldn't make any difference in another post.worth checking in fsuipc that autosave is OFF.read in another post that this is another cause of stuttering.good luck with new card :smile:steve-0just read your post about why you are swapping card..hope it works out for you:-) Edited February 22, 201214 yr by stevehowe REX SKYFORCE 3D steve howlett
February 22, 201214 yr Now that we are on the topic.. :) I have an "ASUS ENGTX460 DirectCU 2DI 1GD5" (my motherboard is:ASUS M4A87TD USB3), should I stay with that or move to the GTX 580? And which one, I see ASUS ENGTX580, EVGA and so on? Plz help, it's a jungle for me.. :Nerd: :Peace:RegardsJakob 737 CL/NG skysurfer
February 22, 201214 yr Definitely not the 580 for you. 460 is still an excellent card for fsx. You'd probably see some improvement depending on your CPU, but not nearly enough to justify $500US. If you do choose to upgrade your gpu I'd suggest you consider the 560ti instead. It costs half as much. February 22, 201214 yr Hi Ken! Okay, well I have a AMD Phenom II X6 1090T 6-Core TurboBoost 3,2Ghz pr. core. And 16GB DDR3 RAM. :-) 737 CL/NG skysurfer
February 23, 201214 yr Then i'd recommend sticking with your 480. I doubt you'd see much difference with a CPU under 4ghz, at best you'd probably be able to run slightly higher aa. The 480 is still a good card for fsx. Kenneth Weir My Saitek yoke mod i7 2600k @ 4.7 8GB Gskill CAS7 2x GTX580 SLI Surround + GT520 Accessory Win7x64
February 23, 201214 yr Hi Ken, first off, The cpu is over 4ghz I have 6 cores and each core performes 3,2. ;-) Well I will then stick to my 460. :-) Edited February 23, 201214 yr by JakobF 737 CL/NG skysurfer
February 23, 201214 yr Hi Ken, first off, The cpu is over 4ghz I have 6 cores and each core performes 3,2. ;-) Well I will then stick to my 460. :-)No, it doesn't work like that. It's 3.2ghz, not 3.2 times 6.The overwhelming bulk of fsx is in the main thread, which can run on only one core. Quad-cores or higher are better because you can separate the main thread from the fiber & texture loading threads. There are a few good discussions in this forum about affinity mask that'll go into more detail about fsx & multi-core cpu's if you're interested. February 23, 201214 yr Ahhhhh hehe then I'm sorry. :-) But It's quite fast, so I'll just stick to the rig I have. ;-) But thank you very much Ken! 737 CL/NG skysurfer
February 23, 201214 yr quick question but are there limits to what kind of video card you buy with your specs? If not would it be worth it for me to replace my nvidia8800 to a GTX560, 570 or 580? Joe Barton
February 23, 201214 yr I'd go with that, Ken.I upgraded my GTX460 to a GTX 580 and can see no framerate difference.Games like Assassin's creed are much clearer in the 580,but FSX, Nada.. If not would it be worth it for me to replace my nvidia8800 to a GTX560, 570 or 580?It's not so much a limit as balancing your equipment. If your CPU is the bottleneck then even the best video card wont help. 570,580's I would reserve for quad cores or more running 4+ ghz. Even if you plan on upgrading soon I still wouldn't buy a 5xx card at least until after the 6xx's are out & prices drop. That'd be a better plan if you're wanting something to keep for future systems.560ti's are pretty reasonably priced though, so if it's just time for an upgrade I'd recommend it. I doubt youd see a difference between the 3 in any system as far as fsx is concerned. February 23, 201214 yr If you bought a 560ti it would definitely be a whole lot of card for that CPU but it'd still offer an improvement over your current card, just don't expect an extra 20fps. Plus if you decide to build a faster system later on you could just throw it in the new pc. If you know you're going to keep that pc for another year or two you might be better off saving a little money & go for a gtx460 or something similar. It's entirely up to you & how much you feel comfortable spending. I put 2 580's in mine because I don't plan on upgrading again for another couple of years, plus they help with non-fsx activities. February 23, 201214 yr Im not really up for spending money (flight training starts very soon for me and thats more important to me) but my current computer is pretty outdated. DDR2s (really expensive nowdays) intel core 2 (cannot upgrade to i7s etc) Joe Barton
