February 23, 201214 yr As the subject says, my trusty old TrackIR 4 just died. Should I shell out for a new one, V5, or should I find a used V4 for half the price? Alternatively I guess I could make something with free track, but I don't really want to ruin my web cam, and it sounds like a lot of work to build the IR led harness.I just tried FaceTrackNoIR, and spend 15 min trying to configure it. It was very wobbly and not at all smooth. In fact it made both my eyes and my head hurt. I also realised during this test that I really cannot fly without some kind of head tracking, so I am quite desperate to find a replacement :-)What's your experience with state-of-the-art head tracking? Given that I was still using V4 I am slightly out of date. Frank Olaf Sem-Jacobsen
February 23, 201214 yr Personally I love my Track IR4, and if it died, well then I would have a great reason to update to Track IR5!! I have been thinking about going ahead and updating it anyways. Track IR certainly seems to be very popular as far as head tracking devices for flight simulators. :( Don B
February 24, 201214 yr I've got a TIR5 and I absolutely love it. My personal understanding is that it offers significantly improved resolution, which dramatically improves smoothness. I don't think you'll regret spending the $150 on it. Joe Sherrill
February 24, 201214 yr If you really want to overdo things, try out everything else, then come back to where you knew you belonged the whole time--TRI5. Dan George (woodhick)Check out Greenbrier Aero Club, the VA for and about the GA pilot.

February 24, 201214 yr Author Thanks for your comments. It appears that there is only a single real solution to my problem, so I went ahead and bought myself a brand-new TrackIR 5 together with the track clip pro (not really sure yet how much this will benefit me, but time will show :-) ). The sad thing is that it is not only $150 in Norway, it is closer to 250 with the Norwegian sales tax (and this is without the track clip pro). Anyway, it should arrive in the beginning of next week, and I'm really looking forward to it because it turns out that I don't really want to fly without it at all. Frank Olaf Sem-Jacobsen
February 24, 201214 yr Good! Something everyone else hasn't mentioned is the much wider field of view with TIR5. It's significant when close to the camera. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules

February 26, 201214 yr Only if you throw your kit down out of frustration LOL.I thought the same thing... Until it happened to me! That piece of hardware is a bit too fragile for it's design purpose: Being clipped to the side of a headset! ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
