FSX? Not impressed

Featured Replies

Specifically using FSX with Windows 7, John; two things come to mind:1). you need to add HIGHMEMFIX=1 to the [GRAPHICS] section of your fsx.cfg, which you will find in:- C:Users (your user id here) Application DataMicrosoftFSX ....... and:2). You may as well drop this file into your FSX root folder while you're "in the preventing future issues" mode.... This is the dreaded UIAutomationCore.dll fix. The file is here:-http://dl.dropbox.com/u/52676345/UIAutomationCore.place_in_fsx_root.dll - just change the name to that above and place it in FSX root. That's all.It fixes an issue whereby fsx seems to count up the number of mouse clicks in any particular flight, and then freezes when it gets to a certain number, leaving the sound running as if nothing has happened, and you screaming at the locked screen. This file is the Vista 32-bit file and when it's in the root folder fsx will uses it in place of the W7 version.Lastly - what is your hardware?

Can't say I've had any of these problems with FSX. For the more recent FS releases, the only one that ran better for me than the previous one "out of the box" was FS2002. For me, FS9 needed plenty of tweaking and eventually new hardware to run "as well as" my FS2002. So FSX isn't any different for me in that respect.scott s..

Thanks, Bigmack, I guess so. I uninstalled and will try again. Trouble is I run W7 x64 and it came out after FSX. Are there any particular install issues I should know about. As I say it is the GOLD version of FSX. Should it be installed in Programs, or in the root directory?John
If you have the Acceleration version install that. I install everything into my program files folder. If you're not familiar using Win7 user rights and permissions, install outside program files. Turn off UAC, Uninstall and reinstall FSX gold or accel. Once you have it up and running from default install, shut it down and restart. Then start making your tweaks a few at a time. Re start after each tweak making sure it works for you. Make a list of the tweaks you make, also write down the starting value that way if something goes crazy, you can go back. Nick tweaks are ok, but should only be used as a reference guide. It's not the holy bible. FSX reacts differently on everybody's computers. You must experiment with what's works or don't with your system.

Knock on wood, I have never had a problem related to UAC with my FSX install - I do not have UAC disabled either. But I did install FSX outside of the programs folder, in fact on it's own physical hard drive. As far as overclocking, I personally do not see the need to reset everything in the system back to default just to install FSX. However anyone that overclocks, should do some serious stability testing to be sure the system is stable at the overclock achieved, I know I do.

Thanks for fix and the link, Paul J.Hardware: Asus Rampage mobo, Q9650 (oc to 3.8 Ghz), EVGA GTX260 1MB (oc), OCZ DDR2 4MB, Dual Boot. First HDD: W7 partition 130GB, FSX partition 350GB 7200 SATA; Second HDD: partitions for XP Pro and FS9. Loads of cooling fans. Widescreen NEC Multisync, GoFlight GF-TQ6, Saitek Pro Rudder Pedals, CH Eclipse Yoke. WideFS links to a laptop running ASE, Ground Environment, Radar Contact, FS Flight Keeper and VA loggers of various kinds - not all at once though!W7 was installed before XP so I have the option in the BIOS of choosing which OS to use.I run a triple monitor set up for FS9 using a second video card giving three outputs. I realise that my triple mon arrangment will not work in FSX.http://pic20.picture...7/376825951.jpg

:( I still think FS2002 had a lot going for it. There were some beautiful addon sceneries made for it - often small scale by folks like Don Elliott, Tom Fica, Frank Betts. I still use these ported over to FS9, including some of my own attempts. I reckon the AI engine was much superior to the FS9 version. It would be interesting to install FS2002 and max it out on my current system. Thanks again to all who offered advice.John

Hmm... Sounds ok. That Q9650 can be pushed a bit more, I think, John - there're a good number out there that do 4.1 and 4.2, and some even higher, though I wouldn't try it without water! :( (By the time you blow it the SB will be cheap enough to get it inside the monthly cheque....... :( )

The point that's needed here is getting a good running stable FSX system. Once that's achieved. Then he can apply tweaks and OC's. Don't put the cart before the horse is my theory.

Aaah... I see... yes, it's certainly been around for - probably hundreds of years, hasn't it? :( The 'toughie' with a computer is that it's not so simplistic as a single cart; and a single horse - pretty much everything can be twiddled to death, so one might consider that getting a decent, stable and useable platform might be the first thing to fix, and the right direction in which to proceed, as then he can play with the FSX settings, knowing that he's able to test against a known pc speed, rather than thinking (and being advised, of course) that it might get better when he overclocks it..... And.. well, seeing as how he's "been at it for 30 years" he probably has a very good idea of what he has to do next without you or me telling him anyway - but not many folk - at least on Avsim - run a 9650 any more, and he might not know that 4.1 or 2 is probably needed, and that it actually is "do-able" with that proc. Cheers! :(

Dude calm down and take a deep breath. I run a 9550 quad core and can achieved the pleasures I want from FSX. I glad you can get what you want from your I7, and yes you have a bad &@($* system. I give you your props. But I was only making suggestions that works for me that may work for him. Even though I been at this for 20+ years.

Progress! :smile:The sim is still not fine-tuned by any stretch of the imagination, but I can make a short flight without any of the problems I referred to in my first post. I am fairly sure I can improve things more. I accept that my system is not going to show FSX off at its best. I'm a low, slow flyer so maybe with low traffic and no water effects I will get acceptable frame rates.I did the reinstall with overclocking off and have not reset this. I had trouble when I tried to run higher than 3.8GHz - I got error messages saying that the setting was incompatible with my graphics settings. So, I settled for 3.8. Paul J, I took your advice re the .dll and the [GRAPHICS] addition. Just a few things more: Must I always start with the Trike in mid-air over Friday Harbor? In FS9 I always started with the default Cessna but rarely on the runway at KSEA. With an addon scenery there it took too long to load! What is the simplest way to set up a triple monitors system so that I can replicate the sort of views I can get in post #20? Maybe someone could post a link? I must admit that my method for doing this in FS9 is laborious and has to be customised for every plane. Furthermore, not all planes are suitable, and none of the default planes can be set up this way. Thanks again.John
