FSX? Not impressed

Featured Replies

As an old sod who started this FS lark about 30 years ago with Molimerx's Jumbo for the old BBC micro, I gotta get this one off my chest. :(Since then, I've flown them all, even made a few sceneries, and tweaked FDEs in my time. Finally, and against my better judgement, I bought FSX Gold. This is the DeLuxe version with Acceleration Expansion Pack which gets around all them Service Pack thingys.I've spent all day trying to set up a short flight in the default C172 without success. The problems? Too many to list but here's some:1. Impossible to calibrate Saitek rudder pedals, CH Eclipse yoke, and GoFlight TQ6. It seems they calibrate but then some default process kicks in and wipes it all out. I've been using FSUIPC for years to calibrate in FS9 and I know the pitfalls. This FSX has me beat. Am using the latest FSUIPCX version.2. When I took my PPL my instructor told me to look to the end of the runway to keep the aircraft straight. In the C172 the pilot's view seems to dip down so that perhaps only half the runway can be seen, even on a short strip. A horrible feeling of not knowing where your going.....3. When I make an adjustment to Settings, and then have to restart the sim, the adjustments are lost! For example I do not want tool tips, but they keep coming back every time I restart.4. Numerous CTDs with the 'fatal error' message.Perhaps I've missed something obvious. I suspect I have not. Roll on X-plane is all I can say, if this is the best MS can turn out!JohnP.S. Running W7 x64 bit with more than enough grunt in the system to run a C172 off a short strip in the middle of nowhere. :(

Hi John,FSX is extremely impressive, but not out of the box. When properly setup, on the right hardware, with the right addons there is nothing in the universe that can touch it or even come close. As an old time simmer, FSX impresses the snot out of me! :good:Kind regards,

Installed outside of the Program Files folder?Installed Deluxe, ran FSX, then installed Acceleration and ran FSX?

FSX impresses the snot out of me!
Is that a Canadian expression? :lol:They should have that on the box!

Have you tried X-Plane? I did. It doesn't even come close to FSX and for many reasons, it's no longer on my system. I hope you do buy it though to see for yourself (have a strange feeling though that you are part of X-Plane development team).Jim

Betelgeuse, if that is the way you ask for help, stick to FS9 or switch to X-Plane.

KInd regards

You're right. FSX isn't really that impressive, until you spend a couple hundred bucks on addons, a couple thousand on hardware, and a month or so getting it tweaked properly. Then it really is impressive. Unfortunately, you don't even have the option to tweak XP that far, so it remains just meh. We really need a new platform, but that has yet to emege.Regards,George

With all of this know how, it sure seems like you'd be able to figure FSX out. I know this was meant to cause a stir, but really? FSX had been out since 2006...

I suspect you missed something. I run FS9 and FSX proberly 50/50. And FSX with the proper tweaks runs great on my meger machine. The only thing that keeps me inmersed in FSX is the PMDG 737 and the Dukes. If iI can fly them in and out of major airports with AS2012, 70% AI, GE pro, Orbx, RC, UT using all CH products, you should be good to go with the default 172. I never use the default 172 except to load first, then load my payware AC. You're definitly doing something wrong.PS the LDS767 and Leonadros MD run good in FSX also

HAve you removed the joystick joystick assignments in FSX,I use FSUIPC pay and now that I understand the calibration better with my pathetic joystick I can actually do pretty good carrier landings. As posted dont install FSX in the default folder, disable UAC it cam really impress me sometimes. XPlane still has someway to go.

Jim, I'm a pensioner and not on any development team. A strange feeling you had indeed! I can see from your PC's specs that I've a way to go before I can get the FSX fires lit properly. I guess the same applies to X-plane though.

Yes, I did all that. I will disable UAC, thanks for the reminder. I agree, XPlane still has a way to go, which is why I am trying to get FSX up and running.

Thanks, Bigmack, I guess so. I uninstalled and will try again. Trouble is I run W7 x64 and it came out after FSX. Are there any particular install issues I should know about. As I say it is the GOLD version of FSX. Should it be installed in Programs, or in the root directory?John

You really need to get the basics sorted out!http://www.simforums...187.html#198187Install FSX outside the programs folder pref. on its own drive, but you´ll know all this when you read NIckN´s guide, good luck.

Try to assign all your hardware via FSUIPC4 (here), you will never look back! John Cook's FSUIPC Guide (here) will tell you how.Cheers,- jahman.

Thanks for the link, Tor. That should set me on the right track.I've o/c'd my PC to 3.8 GHz so Nick's already offered a timely (gettit?) reminder to reset this to default before installing FSX again. Also, the UAC disable. Yes, it has its own drive. Lots of space there.Good stuff, many thanks.Jahman, just read your post. Thanks for the links and encouragement. John

Many many people run this OS with FSX (including me) with no issues, other than what has already been stated: Don't install under "Program Files".I would recommend (and other people will have done this differently):1) Install FSX and all of your add-on directories under simply C:FSX (or similar)2) go into options for the short-cut to FSX and configure it to always run as administrator. Or simply right click and run as admin.3) In your virus software there should be a way to exclude a directory from being scanned. Exclude c:FSX (or similar). This will keep your virus scanner from scanning fsx as well as add-ons that you have installed under the FSX directory. This will allow faster loading of files. If you don't see the potential of FSX with add-ons, I highly suggest going out to youtube and simply typing in "FSX". Watch a few videos, and you'll see what the rest of us see.Good luck!
