March 18, 201214 yr I just downloaded and installed. No problem installing to a separate D: drive, but I left all the other default download directories as "default"...C:Useryadayadayada.Then I downloaded the Demo aircraft.Then I downloaded the Hawaii Pack.Then I went to see where all the "stuff" was "saved" 'cos I didn't want to fill up my C: drive with Flight downloads. But...hmmmm...not much there in those directories.Am I correct that when you purchase something like the Hawaii Pack, or one of the Airplanes, it all really just gets installed into the Flight directory and NO massive-sized download files remain in the C:User directories? I was thinking I was going to have to archive a bunch of downloaded stuff from the Hawaii Pack, but is it more like, "Once you bought it, you don't need to archive anything after installing it, 'cos if your computer trashes you can just re-download everything you purchased previously?" March 18, 201214 yr Am I corrct that when you purchase something like the Hawaii Pack, or one of the Airplanes, it all really just gets installed into the Flight directory and NO massive-sized download files remain in the C:User directories? I was thinking I was going to have to archive a bunch of downloaded stuff from the Hawaii Pack, but is it more like, "Once you bought it, you don't need to archive anything after installing it, 'cos if your computer trashes you can just re-download everything you purchased previously?"No, addons will not get installed into the Flight directory, unless you have gone into settings in GFWM and designated that is where to put them.By default they will go into your C: drive - you can go into settings and see what is listed there by default, for addons to be downloaded/installed into.The folder is not easily identifiable, for my addons for instance, the folder name they are installed in is 4d5308d2. Mine are installed to E:/Microsoft Games/ - because that is where I specified in the settings on my GFWM menu. So inside the Microsoft Games folder, I have two folders - one the aforementioned 4d5308d2 which is my addons, and another - Microsoft Flight. This is because how I set it up originally in settings and how I wanted my installs. If I wanted my addons installed right into the Flight Folder, then I would just have specified that folder/path in the settings menu prior to downloading them. Now inside that numbered folder for my addons, 4d5308d2, I have a subfolder named 00000002. Inside that subfolder, I have two subfolders, named with a very long sequence of numbers/letters that I won't bother with copy'ing/pasting here. One of those subfolders is my Hawaii Adventure Pack, which is 882 mb, and the other is for the Maule, which is 101mb.I presume any future addons I may purchase will also go into their own folder within the E:/Microsoft Games/4d5308d2/ folder as well. I know at the least they will go into the Microsoft Games folder there, as that is how I have it set in GFWM...So really, a little careful planning from the outset will put the game and any addons exactly where you want them. For me, just like FSX, I prefer to not have them on my system partition - my C: partition. I don't like have any games installed on that partition, I am just one who believes I might bet a little better performance by not having them on my system partition - I think it also maybe helps with any UAC issues as well, I can certainly say I have never run into any permissions issues with any games I have installed, including FSX.Now whether it's a good idea to install addons directly into the actual Flight Folder itself, versus outside of it like I have it, I have no clue on. I at least have mine installed into the Microsoft Games folder, so the two are at least very close by for orginazational purposes if nothing else.As far as the actual downloaded file itself, the installer gets rid of it once installation is complete, so there is no need to worry about finding a large file that needs to be archived/deleted. Once it is done, it is done and ready to go.I hope some of this information is helpful to some... Don B
March 18, 201214 yr ***** How To Change Your Downloads Directory In Flight if You Installed Flight in a Non-Default Directory, But Left The "DLC" Download Directory as Default *****I installed Flight onto my D: drive during the initial download and install. I did this by telling the installer to put it on my D: drive. However, I did NOT change any of the other directories, for like downloading DLC's. This placed all after-installation DLC content on my Win7 OS drive in C:UsersmyusernameAppDataLocalMicrosoftXliveDLC(a numbered folder name). I don't want DLC files filling up my OS drive, so...I tried to manually move that "numbered folder name" to my D:Microsoft Games folder, but that hosed Flight. After some trial and error, I discovered how you CAN get the folder moved WITHOUT having to re-install Flight.1. Start Flight and go to your Pilot's Page, and click on Settings (you need to be logged in to "Live" already...I have my Flight do that automatically when Flight starts)2. Select "My Downloads"3. You will be taken to your My Downloads page in your browser. Click on "Settings".4. Change the "DownLoad Content will be saved to..." directory to wherever you want. I selected the D:Microsoft Games folder on my D: drive. I DON'T think you should select the Microsoft Flight sub-folder under that, but I didn't try that.5. You wll get a warning box that says something like, "This will remove all DLC content from your Flight installation. To re-install it, go to your downloads page and re-download it. Do you want to continue?"6. Select "Yes" (or maybe it was "OK"...whatever).7. When #6 is finished and you are back at your downloads page, any previous DLC you added to Flight will now have a "Retry" button for it. Click it, then re-download it. The DLC will be re-downloaded into a NEW "numbered" folder under the D:Microsoft Games folder on your D: drive (using my example above) and the DLC will be re-installed into Flight.8. Go back to your DEFAULT DLC folder under your USERNAME on your OS drive and look in it. In mine the original DLC content was still there (the "numbered sub-folder"). If so, delete the NUMBERED SUB-FOLDER UNDER the DLC folder to get the DLC content off your OS drive. 9. The next time you start Flight, everything should be fine with all your DLC there.Happy flying! No need to un-install Flight and re-install it all from scratch.Thanks to "dburne" above for pointing me in the right direction to figure it out! MODS: Feel free to make this a "sticky" or add it to the Tutorials section in the forum for Flight if you want. Rick Ryan
March 18, 201214 yr Thanks to "dburne" above for pointing me in the right direction to figure it out!You are most welcome, glad it helped you!I too like you, ended up needing to delete that dlc numbered subfolder from my OS drive, once I had reinstalled to my E drive. Don B
March 18, 201214 yr I'll have to give that a try... eventually.Now, can anyone come up with a method that doesn't require a re-download? Just pretend I'm on dialup, (or have to pay a few hundred dollars for the required bandwidth, as some peope would).Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
March 18, 201214 yr I reinstalled it because I couldn't get it to download the Maule and wanted to start all over with a new ID and account.I directed it to install in my Windows 8 program files directory, which is on my D: drive and is where all my Windows 8 software is installed.I ran the game and it ran fine but when I looked later I found that all is did was create a Microsoft Games Folder with a Flight folder underneath it, it installed the game in my Users folder on drive C:.Weird!I downloaded the Maule through the online page to my new account and I now have the Maule show in my Hanger, but I still can't access it,I just sits there with the camera going around but I can't fly it, very frustrating.I think they could have done a lot to improve the way all of this works, I'm a real fan of flight sims but this is turning me off.Mike
March 19, 201214 yr When I was downloading it for the first time I just back spaced the C and replaced it with a J for my fight Sim dedicated drive, everything worked fine.
