March 1, 201214 yr Great and simple to read guidance for TOGA is provided by Captain Mike Ray, a retired United Airlines captain:http://www.utem.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=46 He says that one of the most important things to remember is to set the missed approach altitude on the MCP once you have captured the glide slope on landing, otherwise when you push TOGA, nothing significant will happen. March 1, 201214 yr Ed,As Matt mentioned, TOGA is guidance, it is not a mode that takes control of the aircraft. If the AP and AT are off, but you have the FD on, it's up to you to set the throttles and follow the FD manually with the yoke. If AP and AT are on, they will follow those commands for you.If you need to think about it in a different way:Leave the AP off, but configure yourself for an approach (Nav freqs and courses) and hit APP on the MCP. If the FD is on, you can follow that down to the runway. If the AP is on, it will follow it for you. Similarly, if you hit TOGA without the AP or AT on, it will just provide guidance (FD) and thrust limits (for the throttles). If AT is off and you hit TOGA, it will not auto-engage AT. Nothing can auto-engage AT, to be honest. You have to manually flip the switch.OK. Makes more sense now. Thanks a lot.Hi,Some good info here, but not all correct. You need to look at three distinct cases:-AFDS configured for autoland: Autopilot A & B BOTH engaged with localizer and glideslope captured AND flare armed annunciated. Autothrottle is engaged.Pushing the toga button will engage go around mode. Autothrottle will move forward to produce reduced GA thrust. Autopilot will remain engaged and will pitch up to follow flight director GA guidance....cheersMarijn De GussemeThis is exactly what I was looking for. All pieces came together now. March 1, 201214 yr Author Hello - I am the original poster. WOW some excellent information here. I didn't expect such a response.Thank you to everyone that chimed in on the discussion. It's good to get the correct proceedures established. Now to try out the various options until they sink in and are second nature.Thank you again, Iain WilloW (YMHB) flaps2approach.comB737-800 simulator

March 2, 201214 yr Commercial Member A bug with this was fixed in SP1c - previously under certain conditions you'd get no "popup mode" FD bars if you pressed TOGA while doing a visual approach with the FD bars off. That's fixed. The trick used in real life to retain A/T go-around ability on a manually controlled visual approach by the way is to leave the A/T switch on but just deselect the MCP speed button - this puts the A/T in ARM and gives you manual control of the thrust. If you press TOGA while in this state, the A/T will reengage and automatically increase the power. Ryan MaziarzFor fastest support, please submit a ticket at http://support.precisionmanuals.com
