I need a weather program!

Featured Replies

I'm desperate, help! What are you guys currently using for real weather with FSX; what are the latest and greatest programs that you are happy with in terms of 'hardcore simming'?I've used both Activesky Evolution and Activesky 2012 in the past and present, and frankly I dislike them more than I can say without employing profanity. The Activesky series has never failed to fail; at least for me personally, and I'm tapped out at trying the various tweaks that never seem to work. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it, and I'd rather have fair skies set through FSX itself than to ever have to use Activesky ever again. Having said this, what are you guys' experience with the other weather programs currently available for FSX? Thanks for your input!

Maybe if you told us what you hate so much about AS we could lead you in the right direction. Most really enjoy it.

Maybe none of my business, but I'll just explain my point of view. I'm a member of a 700+ local community that's quite talkative. Some of them have REX, some AS, and, yes most of them really enjoy them, but again, there are some, that are not so happy with them. I noticed one detail: Those who love either REX or AS have one thing in common - they all have high-end computers. The same is true for those who hate it - they have low-end PC's. Logical conclusion is, both REX and AS are too complex and chew up into hardware resources - already overstressed CPU misses some commands and then something doesn't happen. Rising priority of REX or AS to prevent then produces significant drop in FS X performance, but there are still occasions when weather is not loaded into the sim. User thinks something is wrong with the software while actually it is not. And when this fact is explained, most common reaction of average user is: "I'm not buying or upgrading my machine just because of a piece of software."Just my 1 cent.

I'm a long time REX user and very happy with it.they are also in the process of releasing a major Upgrade to among other things ,improve the weather engine.it's a massive upgrade which is free to all previous buyers.my other plus for REX is also to the team behind it.an amazing bunch of people who will help you even if it's not REX related.I'm also a fan of Jim Skorna from HIFI.always ready to help.it just so happens i use REX though. My REX install at the moment is about 11gb so quite big and i use the 1024 textures .the weather does look very good.steve-0

I have ASE and I love it, it is giving me very realistic weather from departure to destination, much better than the weather engine from REX.Honestly I doubt you'll find better!David Di Domizio

Thanks Steve!!

As2012 has a better weather engine that REX. REX has better textures than AS2012. I use bothfor their repective strengths.-George

FSrealWX cant be beat, constants updates, great support, it works perfectly, and its free.

Jay

For FSX the best program is AS 2012.For FSX and FS 2004 installed on the same computer ASE is the best. For older machines running FS 2004 only, ASv6.5 is the best.

My advice, I'd personally to wait to purchase REX if you're thinking about it to see if they're going to address the violent wind shifts in the upcoming Essential release.

Currently, Activesky 2012 is screwing up temperature aloft depictions and clouds are popping in and out unrealistically. Yes, yes I know I can disable DWC and tweak this or that, change this or maybe this, try this or maybe this, update this or reinstall this. I've done the tweaks and spent literally hundreds of hours going through forums, support tickets, etc over the years.
From reading your post, it sounds like the things you hate are the bugs withing FSX itself. Everything you mentioned does have fixes as well, as I experienced them all as well too, but not after I fixed it. I'm afraid that you may just hate every weather add on you try because the wind shifts and temp problems are problems with FSX itself and how it interacts with weather add-ons.The only other thing I could suggest for you is the FSRealWx mentioned above, I've also heard good things about it. You can look at the new REX but I'd bet money you see the exact same problems.Jim's absolutely right about AS2012 being the best. It is not perfect but they have done the best that is possible within the confines of FSX. Coupled with registered FSUIPC (a must have) the problems you mentions almost completely disappear. I understand that you don't want to hear that, but aside from what is mentioned in this thread, what you're asking for doesn't exist.
