Just a quick question, please keep in mind I am not really familiar with anything ETOPS related, so just asking:

 

Caribbean Airlines flies from Port of Spain to Toronto, basically most of the way above the Atlanti. Do their aircraft need to be ETOPS certified, are those flights so called ETOPS flights?

Most of the time, upper winds blow easterly, so when you fly west you are flying with a headwind of anywhere from 10 to 150 kts, so it varies a lot depending where you are at what time. Going east is much quicker, especially if you get in a higher speed wind area.

Now I see. So this is why flights from America to Europe are much shorter than flying the opposite direction. Good to know:-)

Depends, if they keep close enough to the coast, then you dont need to consider them ETOPS. Direc great circle route would put you about 15ish minutes into ETOPS area, but 75minute ETOPS will do, that should be fairly easy to achieve. Alternatively, you can route a bit west over Hispaniola.
