March 19, 201214 yr I've never had an OOM error in X-Plane, though I haven't been using it that long! I've certainly had a few in FSX. 64bit will really open up a lot of possibilities for X-Plane! For example if PMDG follows through with it's plans to develop for it. Right now the NGX in FSX takes it to it's limits. Many still have problems getting enough system resources to run it. Right now they may face the same issues in XP. If the App is made 64-bit, it will allow them to make the model and future ones even more detailed in graphics and systems.Hmm.. don't get your hopes up for too much. A lot of people seem to have this 'holy-grail' image of using 64 bit architecture for the sim platform and think it's going to radically change their lives. While I agree it is the way forward, I don't think you will see an awful lot of improvement unless you're one that suffers frequent memory exhaustion errors. As Ben Supnik wrote in his blog, moving to 64 bit isn't going to magically make it run faster, nor is it going to allow aircraft developers to model more detailed aircraft systems. All it will do is allow the software to utilize more main memory, so that limit of 4GB (if the app is large address aware which I believe XP10 is) is removed. Most things graphics related in the sim use graphics memory rather than main memory, so you won't see much/any improvement here. Without wanting to kill everyone's excitement, to be honest I expect unless you currently suffer out of memory errors, I doubt you would even notice the difference running a 64 bit version. March 20, 201214 yr I've never had an OOM error in X-Plane, though I haven't been using it that long! I've certainly had a few in FSX.That's because there never has been anything to really tax it in respect to Virtual Address Space to cause a OOM. A PMDG level addon, especially one like the NGX will certainly do so.Hmm.. don't get your hopes up for too much. Your right about the speed, 64bit won't be the holy grail in regards to performance, it will however allow far more detailed addons/scenery with the larger address space without running out, causing OOM's. March 20, 201214 yr There are regions where I can't fly because of OOM errors, even with resolution set to normal + compressed. I was easily able to blow XP9 above the 3,5/4GB, you can bet it is much worse with XP10 (all that while preserving good FPS wich indicates that at least I could fly without crashing a lot again). So yes, 64-bit for me is GREAT news, even if it means to wait for some plugins to get the overhaul. * 2010 MacPro, 27' display * Snow Leopard * XP10 *
March 20, 201214 yr For those who are looking for OOM errors, just get my new HD Mesh Scenery :( ... it is quite good at building up memory pressure (it usually crashes, when the "scenery shift" happens ... which is, when X-plane need to load new scenery tiles while you are flying).http://forum.avsim.n...-mesh-released/And you are correct, that 64bit is mostly about memory problems and NOT about performance in general. March 22, 201214 yr Ben has posted some more useful information on the blog concerning mostly 64 bit. It seems now is about the right time for me to switch to 64bit with my next machine.Just testing the Edit is back. ;)I have noticed a couple of programs I use regularly are specifying 64 bit as a better option now. (photo editing software etc)
March 24, 201214 yr Most programs I use regularly, including LibreOffice, Firefox, FlightGear and of course my operating system are "64-bit" since years. X-Plane is the only program where I still need ia32-libs. I'm glad to hear this will change soon. :( Georges - OpenStreetMap - Ubuntu GNU/Linux -
