Why are MD 80's still flying?

Featured Replies

They're old birds aren't they.. even MD 11s are a bit younger but seems MD 80's are more popular. There were more than 860 something in 2009 and in 2011 they were 621 (yes, i read it from wikipedia). Kind regards

I'm really glad they are still there to be honest. Last wednesday was my first flight in a SAS MD-81, and I must say that it was the most pleasant flight I had had so far. This is partly due to the fatc that the plane was half e,mpty, so it was nice and quiet, but it's also the design of the cabin, the relatively low noise volume of the engines... Specifically that last item surprised me, since I was sitting at the back of the plane, at the aft aspect of the wing root, so I could overlook the flaps. One very fun thing was the fact that I could interpret whatever happened on the plane, thanks to both the Leonardo Maddog and Super 90, which I have both flown a lot. Really adds to the experience of a flight, I must say!

Because buying new aircraft is expensive. Delta, American, and every other major 121 operator are in the process of wholly replacing their MD-80s.

You could say the same about any aircraft still flying....Why are DC-3's still flying? Why are 727's still flying? Why are DC-10's still flying?Truth is they are all awesome and I wouldn't want to see any of them disappear anytime soon.Cheers

I love the MD-80's, but dont like being a passenger in them. Too cramped inside, no leg room. (At least AA versions are)Rob

Because it is cheaper than buying a new airplane.

Whenever I have to fly on MD-80s I always grin when the flight attendant goes through the safety card and announces the features of the "Super 80" I have to ask myself what is so super about it? I guess it can't get any better. The only way it could get worse is if they came with 3 seats on each side instead of 2 by 3. This would be bad because not only would you be cramped and have undersized overhead compartments, but you would no longer have a center aisle if the seats were 3 by 3. Oh, they could put skinnier seats in it. I feel the same way about the 757. It is beautiful on the outside and I would be happy in the cockpit, but if you are seated near the back rows it gets uncomfortable waiting to disembark the plane.Keith
