777 747 V2 HUD

Featured Replies

With that reasoning, sure.

But I was thinking... since 787 was an extension on 777 rating anyway... It would mean a shared rating and common cockpit for mid-long haul to ultra-long haul fleets, with prospect of extending the commoniality into short-to-mid haul with eventual 737 Max replacement. Not thinking HGS is the most essential part of the 787, but as soon as they started replacing displays and so, they might as well add the option. I am not sure if they will be going that way or the other, but I think the idea has some merit.

787 is a separate fleet at all the airlines who've gotten it as far as I'm aware. It's still a 2 week course to transition to it from the 777.

But they could have made the hud an option for the airlines who want it and for the airlines who want to make the easiest transition they could have ordered 777's without it. I think Airbus managed a smart move by making all the cockpits largely the same starting with the A320 and keeping a large portion of the commonality in the A380/350.

We have HUD's only on the B737-800's at AA.

BTW... the main reason why it's common for 737's to have HUD is to have a 3rd navigation system which is required to fly Cat III C. Most wide bodies already have 3 autopilots or nav systems incorporated to allow for Cat III C operations.

I seriously doubt they're going to ruin cockpit commonality with the older 777s by doing that - it'll probably have some of the integrated EFB type stuff on the ND (taxi diagrams etc like the 748 and 787 do) but I doubt it'll have HGS. Think about where these aircraft are likely to fly too - major international airports with full autoland capable runways. You really don't need an HGS for that. With the 787 it made sense because it's a brand new type and it's conceivable some airlines could use it in places where the HGS would be useful since it's a smaller aircraft. I seriously doubt you'll see a 777X going into any place that would necessitate the use of an HGS though.

I was sure I also heard something about HGS for the 77X. Your reasoning does make sense - however we'll see what Boeing confirm.

Nice shot! I think it's harder to appreciate the HGS in the FSX vs real life if I'm honest. I like it, but not something I'd fall over to use in FSX itself.

Which is actually similar to A320 to A330/40 conversion course, as far as I can tell.

I still think it would make sense, I am not saying you are wrong though. Only time will tell.

I wouldn't want a HUD I mean its neat but it don't work from where I set my view point.

Actually, FEDEX has installed the HUD/EVS on their MD11s and MD10s. They have a current firm plan to install them on their 757s, 767s, and 777s. They have yet to decide if they will install it on their A300s. They cite safety as the reason. Our fleet of Gulfstreams all have EVS. They are very Mx friendly. I only know of one jet that has had any HUD issues.  It would overheat on the ground and not display until inflight. We have a couple of jets that have some minor altimeter splits at altitude due to the disrupted airflow to the Pitot/Static system from the rain gutter around the camera. Gulfstream has moved the camera to the top of the nose on the 650 to correct the problem and get a better picture. The FEDEX jets also have the camera on the top of the nose. With the added benefits and lower minimums, Boeing has also taken a strong interest with EVS. The National Guard in Maryland has EVS on their C-40s/737NG. I will admit that getting used to the HUD takes some time. I would find myself looking around it on landings. Once I set the right brightness and used it more, I like it. The 3 degree line, flight path vector and flare cue makes landing on unmarked runways very easy. EVS is awesome. Amazing that i have the runway clear while the other guy sees nothing. Boeing is looking to add duel EVS systems to aircraft to increase SA.

Too bad it won't be on the 777, I really do love the HUD. I guess I'll have to wait for the PMDG 787 then... haha.

All airports, even ones with CAT3B, can benefit from HUD use. I believe you can actually fly to lower minima with the HUD, pretty sure Horizon /Alaska Airlines have some of the lowest takeoff/landing minima due to the use of a HUD. You only have to fly with it once to realize why Boeing calls it the biggest advancement in safety. This is why they made it standard on the 78, by removing the decision from accountant-run airlines.

As far as putting one on a 747, I'm sure it could use it. The problem is there is no room. Sit in a 747 Cockpit seat and your head will be a few inches from the overhead panel. Because you are sitting so close to the ceiling panel, due to being in the upper deck, there is probably no room to put the hardware (projector) which sits on top of your head in a HGS setup. I think once we see an advancement on the hardware to minimize it or at least mount it remotely, that is when HUDs will really start taking off.
