March 31, 201214 yr I tried V 1.2 to check out the changes to simconnect and I remember that I didn't think p3d performed as well FPS wise compared to FSX. The project didn't go ahead at the time and my developer license lapsed. I have another project so I have installed p3d again with v1.3. I am getting similar results. For testing I am running at 1920x1080 with both sims set comparably. At the default p3d airport I get ~21fps sitting there. In fsx at that airport it's around 38-45. I normally limit it to 30 but as p3d isn't hitting that I removed the limit to see where each was going. I am using a 6970 , i5 @4.5 gigs, 8 gigs ram running off a SSD. Any advise? Obviously it should be running at least the same but not for me just now.?Thanks,Jason
March 31, 201214 yr Author OK, I knew to untick that thing that starts with Bathy but I didnt, I went from 22 to over 30. Still behind fsx on my machine, I am using them in areas where I dont have any additional scenery to keep comparisons similar. I do have rex running on fsx though. It's not way behind but not an improvement yet. I don't need an improvement but if it's expected I should get at least the same as FSX I will keep plugging away.
March 31, 201214 yr Author It seems my performance may match yours then :) It's OK as it is, I won't go chasing FPS unless someone tells me there is a magic trick I didn't perform :)
March 31, 201214 yr In the short time I've been using P3D, I've noticed a few things. FPS is not always better than FSX, but most of the time it is smoother. The bigger improvement for me, is that (I believe) they have definitely done something to the way the engine batches autogen and 3D objects. In FSX, my biggest problem was artefacts and spikes which occurred when the engine rendered a large batch of autogen which happened regardless of Bufferpools settings. In P3D, objects no longer 'fill in' as you pan around (batching) and instead always seem to be present, much like FSX pre SP2. This has, for me, almost alleviated the spikes and artefacts. I say 'almost', a couple of times I have seen them, but it's not nearly as bad as FSX. Of course it's early days and I don't yet have my entire add on scenery library imported, but I've just tested Earth Simulations' Guernsey product which was notorious for spikes in FSX, and in P3D it was a smooth, stutter free and spike free ride! March 31, 201214 yr Hi,I noticed that P3D has the same problem as seen in FSX, I get better FPS and performance with a setting of unlimited from within P3D. So I still use the external limiter program for P3D. I have gained about 8FPS, naturally the hardware/software options on my/your setup may vary immensely, so YMMV while using this external limiter. March 31, 201214 yr I seem to be having good performance with a HD4870 with 512meg ram, Not a default airport but at orbx KHQM on the runway im getting 25 to 35fps and in the air around that area im getting 35 to 40fps so its good for the area :)I was using a Nvidia GTX470 1.2gig of memory on it until it died the other day and i was getting 50 to 60+ fps in the same area with higher settings than im using now.On the stock start up flight ( the one that ships with P3D ) im getting about 50fps using Trackir through ezdok with rex clouds. Im tweaking the AA and AF settings through Radeon Profile Tools software.Due to the limited amount of gfx ram i have had to lower some settings like, Global Texture res - 1024x1024, LOD radius - Large, Water reflection - Sky, Scenery complexity Dense, Cloud Detail - High, AI Aircraft - Off and land and sea traffic all set to 5%.Here is an overlooked tip, you may have a fast cpu and gfx card but running out of gfx memory can cause fps issues and if you tweak the sim you should remember there is a limit on what the gfx card can handle and sometimes poor performance can be due to that. -Paul-
March 31, 201214 yr Author Thanks for all the replies guys! I have not added bojotes tweaks to p3d but I have in fsx. I read it's not necessary but I dont suppose it could hurt. I was about to buy the SBS licnse for orbx and it popped up free so I put that in and was able to fly around at ~ 5960x1080 and maintain ~30fps so that was encouraging. In the past I had needed to span only half of my two outer monitors. Gandy, at startup with the default flight you are smoking me with 50. Maybe that has to do with the ati vs nvidia difference? I dont know but my 6970 and [email protected] can't match it. I was thinking of getting a new 7970 or a 680. I know the 680 would be better in fsx but ati to triple screens better. Hard to know which way to go on that one.
March 31, 201214 yr My Nvidia card has died and now im using a ATI HD 4870, with the Nvidia card i was getting 70+ and with the ATI card im getting around 50fps but im using a screen res of 1920x1080.If you are not already using it i would recommend Radeon Profile tool as its almost like Nvidia Inspector but for ATI cards and you can create custom profiles, as my HD4870 is not great im using x16 AF, x4 AA multisampling, mipmap set to Quality, if i had a faster card with more memory then i would be using higher AA with super sampling.http://www.radeonpro.info/en-US/ -Paul-
March 31, 201214 yr Author I am using ati tray tools so I can set everything as well. At your settings at 1920x1080 I still dont hit 50. Which is good, room to move :) As I say, I am happy enough with it as it it. I will give it another hour of tweaking and call it quits on that front.

On my system the biggest gain in FPS was from disabling Water Reflections completely in prepar3d 1.3
