Got my rudder pedals! And now I suck even more at landings

Featured Replies

When flying, I put my stick and throttle on my desk's keyboard pull-out drawer and move the keyboard up onto the desk surface. This puts the controls at a comfortable height just a little above the arm wrests on my chair. I have a very deep keyboard drawer, though, which lets me pull it way back and still have plenty of room to move the flight controls without hitting the edge of the desk. The mouse goes in between the stick and throttle so I can reach it with either hand, depending on what I'm doing at the moment.

I have the joystick on my desk slightly to the right. It's the most comfortable position for my right arm. I do have to prop the keyboard up on the boxes I have my monitor on to get enough room for the joystick, but that's not a problem.

The CH yoke does not have detents in either elevator or aileron, and I prefer it that way. A detent for the steering might make more sense in a car racing game, but not in a flight sim. It takes a bit of getting used to if you've always had a detent, but I really prefer it without one.

Getting pedals without a detent would be a major plus. It's especially annoying when flying a helicopter, as you end up moving the pedals back and forth across the detent quite often while maneuvering. Being able to put my heels on the floor so I can hold a bit of pedal is something else I've wanted for a long time. I'm amazed that it's taken a company this many years to make a decent set of pedals.

You know now I'm gonna have to buy a set, right? :D Curse you!

You're very welcome. But you may want to read up a bit more about the pedals: I only used them a short while and I have no experience with other pedals at all, so don't take my word on it. However, I did read good reviews about this set, of course, otherwise I wouldn't have bought it. The older Saitek pedals are a LOT cheaper but you have to keep your entire foot on them all the time: I bought these because I read they were more convenient. Don't know if the old ones have a detent.

Thanks Jeroen. I've done a lot of reading on the pedals already. The only thing I couldn't find was if they had a detent, and the actual description of how easy it was to keep your heels on the floor.

I've got CH Pro Pedals, with a detent, and full feet on the pedals. Been using them for years, and wishing for the features I mentioned. :) All I really needed to know was about those two features.

Ok. But er... with a detent you mean a clear point where the pedals stick...? I just read somewhere else these rudders have a detent, and so I wonder what YOU would call an annoying detent... (I always get nervous when people are going to buy something because of posts by me  ). I can't remember they have a real detent which you have to pass or get out of, but unfortunately I can't check it right now (until tomorrow evening...). Maybe someone else can chime in before Hook spends his hard earned money on rudders which a HUGE detent...

EDIT

http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=29206

Ah, so it has a detent. I'll wait for someone else to make pedals without one. Preferrably CH.

And don't worry, I don't make purchase decisions based on just one description, and I wouldn't have pulled out my credit card for at least a month anyway. :)

I'm loving my Logitech G940 pedals, but they are part of a 3-piece set so not an option if you have a good stick & throttle already.

They do not have a detent, just a light centering force that brings them back to neutral when all pressure is removed. They are full-feet pedals that cup the heels, which I prefer as it's more natural for me to adjust and hold their position with leg movements than foot movements. It's what I'm used to doing in RL. It is a very comfortable position and I'm finding myself resting my feet in them when web surfing. I wonder if I can set them to scroll my browser?

Which makes me wonder: how do you guys with joystick use it? On the desktop, on your lap, in front of you or to the side...?

My desk might be a bit low, so to feel comfortable I removed the desk keyboard pull-out drawer in order to use the Saitek Pro Flight Pedals and keep both feet on top of it.

The desk is quite big "L" shaped so upper space is no problem. Im ambidextrous so I can place the joystick and mouse to either side of the keyboard, but I tend to be more precise with the left hand,

.

Radios (NOT connected) are a bit to the side of the right sided monitor, throttle quadrant hmmm….. I guess some friend got a permanent lease on them.

Are the Saitek combat pedals better than the regular Saitek Pro Flight Pedals?

I was going to go with those, but after hearing about the Combat ones, those look even better.

Frankly I don't know, never tried the Combat version. (No friends have them either)

If I had to hold pressure on one pedal for an hour using only my leg muscles, I'd get leg cramps. I know this because I've done it often enough. Trim isn't always available for this purpose. At least with my heels on the floor I have an anchor point and won't need as much pressure.

What real life aircraft have rudder pedals that cup the heels? Can we get a pic?

These are my dream pedals:

I understand the quality is top notch - this particular version, the F16/C - is made to plug in directly to my TM Cougar Hotas, so I would have control over the axis adjustments via my Cougar's software, just like I have now with my older TM Elite Pedals.

I just wish there were on online retailer here in the states.

I like that: "... self calibrating, so no additional software is needed." Um. What if you need a flatter response curve?

Reminds me of the promos for Das Keyboard. It's a standard keyboard with NONE of the keys labelled, because everyone can touch type, right? Tell me... do you touch type the function keys? Basically it's cheaper to make because they don't have to label the keys, but costs more because it has such a special feature.

Those pedals are a bit pricey, aren't they? Well, if you want them, there are probably people here who could buy them and ship them to you.

Capt and First officer pedals ... 4th row pics.

Those are standard pedals that do not cup the heel. Thanks for the pics, tho.

The rudder pedals in a 737NG are the most expensive foot-rests in the world !
