How much of a frame hog is the NGX?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, this is a simple question. I run a pretty decent machine at 4.6Ghz and I love flying the NGX. Normally I'll get around 20-25frames in the VC at a payware scenery like KBOS or latinvfr KMIA. But I wanted to know from other people if the ngx is bad for frames when in the virtual cockpit because earlier I was landing in Miami using LatinVFRs scenery, and on approach I was getting around 20 frames maybe a little less, on the ground it went back to about 24fps but I'm trying to understand if this is normal or if maybe I should be getting better results considering my desktop. I figured approaches into heavy payware airports are always going to drop in frames when in the VC because your getting a whole view of the airport. Oddly enough though when I load up at a big airport my frame rate is better than when landing and taxiing to a gate.

Anyway, what kind of frame rates do you all get when flying in the VC on an approach/ground etc?

I'll be the first to say I haven't checked frame rates in a long time. I get some pretty good smoothness when I need it.

Locked at 30FPS.. if I keep the mouse pointer out of the VC!

The scenery is going to override anything after a certain point - if the scenery isn't designed to get good frames it won't matter which airplane you're flying honestly... I can make default planes a slideshow with certain sceneries...

EDIT: but I checked. I"m getting 30fps with the ngx at KBOS, with a very nice addon, I just forget who did it. And I'm maxed at 30fps.

I have very temperamental frame rates that jump all over the place (I have it set to unlimited, which, other than the inconsistency, gives me the best results), but I don't notice any difference as opposed to similar addons, like Captain Sim products.

temperamental jumping frame rates? That would keep me up at night lol. But yeah, I undersantd what you're saying. And that means, who knows? fps up, fps down.

Ever since I got a good machine to run fsx on i've become obsessed with getting the best possible frames, and i hate being obsessed with it haha. Do you use FlyTampa KBOS Fatback?

I don't know. I just looked for and couldn't find it. It must be there somewhere. It's not flytampa. And yeah, it's so easy to get hooked on fps. Just turn off the counter and fly. That's what I do and it works. I don't even think about it.

I'm still running an old dual core E8400 and I usually get around 20~25 FPS in all default airport and 20 is what I expect a decent frame rate to land the NGX with smoothness. Below 15 is no good to land for me, and that's currently holding me off from buying a lot of addon airports, well except the UK2000 and some photographic scenery.

ill check exactly once i fly it this week again....by the way whats your system specs?

can you post your system specs please?

im trying to get the best out of my system and recently ive been very pleased with it, 20-30 fps using the ngx and as2012 with rex2.0od textures...no payware airports yet tho

i7 4790K 4.8GHz, 16GB DDR3 1866MHz, EVGA RTX 2080 XC. 1TB M.2 SSD, 4TB HDD, 4K display.

For the complexity and texture quality, I would argue that the PMDG NGX is a very frame rate friendly aircraft.

But your mileage will depend on many other factors:-

- As Ryan said, the complexity and performance of the scenery area you're in,

- Your AI and other resource intensive settings (you can run some AI, but don't expect 100% AI, sitting at Heathrow in the NGX!),

- Your system, in particular, the NGX really needs (IMHO) a 64 bit system.

I tried to run it on 32bit Win XP last year, and despite RyanM giving me a lot of support and help, the NGX was not happy. I personally think a 64bit OS, and a GPU Card with no less than 1GB are minimum standards for the NGX. But it you meet those standards, it performs great. It is for example a lot more FPS friendly than say the F1 Mustang, on my system. Where the F1 Mustang gives me 22 FPS, the NGX will give me 30 FPS. Not a slant toward the Mustang as I love it, but I have to enjoy it with settings pretty low in FSX, to get the fluidity.

I'd agree with that to be honest. On a decent system, it actually gets pretty damn good frame rates. Those PMDG guys must have signed a pact with the devil or something :LMAO:
