System Mechanic Blues

Dave,

As mentioned, your only real option probably is to re-install Windows and not use System Mechanic again.

It's not just FS2Crew that's affected, it's all 3rd party programs that use Microsoft Speech Recognition, like Vox ATC, IYP, and the whole lot of us.

You mentioned that you were in contact with Iolo, did they acknowledge the problem?

They will offer you a solution to exempt FS2Crew.. Carrying it out solves nothing! When you reboot system mechanic, it will aotomatically replace the exemption. Alll they do now is offer you to download the latest version with no positive answers to the problem.

The banging your head against the wall because it feels so bloody marvellous when you stop phrase comes to mind.

I have now given their support (if you can call it that!) this url. Let's now hope they can give some credence to this! before they lose any more customers.

What good would exempting FS2Crew do anyway if the damage has already been done? It seems to me that a company that can write code that manipulates the Windows registry(pretty well for the most part) would be able to figure out what exactly is causing the problem and fix it. I would think that the registry keys when SAPI is working should look a certain way. If something is being altered shouldn't it be reasonably obvious to somebody who actually knows what he's doing? They need to just assign somebody to the problem and figure it out.

That is all I am expecting Steve.

Let's hope they get off their butt and do something now that they realise this isn't going to go away. I have done all I can but there is strength in numbers guys.

A more constructive way would be for you to converse with 'System Mechanic' in an attempt to resolve this issue Bryan as you can be more of an influence than us 'punters'.

No, they haven't acknowledged anything.

Yes, they do need to assign someone that cares as the general attitude is that we, are a load of idiots.

I think this thread has run its course.

I can't speak for 'System Mechanic'. This is their problem to fix.

If you've run 'System Mechanic' and voice control stops working (albeit with FS2Crew, VOX ATC, IYP, Voice Buddy or another voice control program out there), your only recourse it seems based on experience is to re-install Windows.

No further discussion on this topic will be entertained.

Wow

The phrase 'Passing the buck' comes to mind Bryan. :Phbbbt:

My Windows 7 Voice recognition works okay. I can control my computer using it so why does System Mechanic stop FS2Crew from working?

The "No further discussion on this topic will be entertained." remark has reduced my respect for your support, which has always been excellent. The suggestion that "I reformat my 2T HDD just to run FS2Crew" is also drastic action!

Have you any idea how long it takes to replace many add-ons, get activations (As almost all devs think we are all pirates) load all the previous payware? It's not hours, it's days!

System Mechanic is based in the U.S. so a simple telephone call to their control centre would get more reaction than one or two of your customer relying on email becuase I am in the UK. I have actively boosted your sales by 'spreading the word' in many other locations so now I need your help?

You speak their language re; technical solutions, I am 70 years old and don't have your technical knowledge.

Only with your input, can this problem be resolved. Dismiss it and you will lose customers.

I was a bit surprised at the topic being put "off limits" too.

However on a positive note :

when this problem first was noticed as being a System Mechanic issue it was too late for me and I had to reinstall Windows 7.

No big deal as I only have FSX on that particular computer.

I find System Mechanic a very useful tool for keeping the computer in order so did not want to stop using it.

I asked Iolo about it and was just advised to do selective registry searches and backup up the registry before a clean out.

I always make a System Mechanic registry backup now before doing a tune up.

Anyway I have just allowed the System Mechanic automatic updater to update it to version 10.8.5.0, tune up version 3.0.127.0, and have done two quick analyses and one deep analysis of the system with the suggested removal of redundant software and registry entries (after making a backup of course), and the voice button in the FS2C main panel is still active.

So on the face of it, it would appear Iolo have done something about the problem, very quietly.

If anyone else tries the update and registry clean up make sure you do a registry back up before you do the clean.

Everything is certainly working normally for me again.

Sorry, guys, for sounding curt.

But I found myself repeating the same information over and over again.

I hope Johnan's solution worked.

I just phoned the "System Mechanic" people again (they have a nice 24 hour tech support line) and they said they are "aware of the problem and working on it".

I credit them for at least admitting there is an issue with their software.

They didn't say anything about Version 10.8.5.0 and 3.0.127.0, though.

Well thank you for that Bryan. I hope that your stick with it and work out a solution for us. I wasn't getting anywhere with them as their lack of information was not forthcoming.

It is like I said before. Your a developer and your voice counts more in our favour.

As a footnote, I haven't had one problem since using System Mechanic whereas before, I was continually paying for repairs to Computer fixers for their time.

Thank you Bryan. I'm sure that the issue has been frustrating to you as it has been for us. We just want to be able to use your terrific product without having to turn the rest of our computer lives upside down. It is encouraging that Iolo "is working on a solution". We appreciate your contacting them again, they didn't seem to be paying much attention to us. I do want to continue using System Mechanic for it has gotten me out of many jams in the past.

Does it seem too much to hope that their solution might actually include a registry fix for those systems that have already been damaged?

Steve Giblin

They may not have changed anything in SM, but I have run it as aggressively as possible and still the "voice" button remains lit.

It may be something in my particular configuration which is preventing SM from damaging the voice system, so until they admit to having solved the problem, if at all, I doubt if they could/would offer a fix for previously damaged systems.

Depending on other installed software that would have to be reinstalled, at least Windows 7 itself can be reinstalled quite rapidly compared to other versions.

I am using a 2T HDD. you must be using 3G mate!

Dave Taylor gb.png

I presume 3G refers to a mobile phone system.

I don't have a mobile so I am not into these things.

I use a SSD but in any event Windows 7 installs in about 15 minutes but what takes time is adding SP1 and the other Windows updates, although it can be left to get on with it, while you do something else.

My problem is that I have everything on 1 drive. It is a nightmare to reinstall everything. If I do have to reinstall Windows I may purchase an SSD and put windows and FSX on that drive and everything else on another. At least that would give me another reason to do a reinstall. In the mean time I'm going to be patient to see if it gets resolved by Iolo.
