May 3, 201214 yr As a 20-year Navy guy myself, I sure would like to see something painted blue. F4U would be my preference, but I'll take what I can get.
May 3, 201214 yr Author The F4U always reminded me of the Star Wars Imperial Shuttle, lol or maybe I should say that the other way around... "Arguing with a pilot is like wrestling with a pig in the mud, after a while you begin to think the pig likes it."
May 3, 201214 yr Author Hard to fly = more fun. It would help users learn about handling, power, speed (t/o and landing) ... list goes on and on. "Arguing with a pilot is like wrestling with a pig in the mud, after a while you begin to think the pig likes it."
May 3, 201214 yr I'd like a corsair or hellcat along with a WWll carrier Oh yes - carrier ops would be excellent! Of course, that's number 2 on my list - still dreaming of a helicopter!
May 4, 201214 yr That's my Daddy, center upper row under the spinner. He led those other seven fine aviators on the adventures of their lives back in the mid 40's. He told me the F4U was a handful and I understand three of those other aviators were replacement pilots due in no small part to carrier operations.
May 4, 201214 yr Author Thats awesome having family with such a strong aviation background. "Arguing with a pilot is like wrestling with a pig in the mud, after a while you begin to think the pig likes it."
May 4, 201214 yr AFAIK for a while the USN couldn't use the F4U from carriers because the landing gear was too rigid and it caused the plane missing the cables if the landing was a bit too hard. That's why carriers had the F6F and most F4Us were operated by the Marines and anyway from land based airports, until the landing gear was fixed much later, meanwhile the F6F became the standard carrier fighter. Anyway, if Flight had have "Hawaii-related" WWII planes, it should have F4F Wildcats, F2A Buffalos, TBD Devastators, SB2U Vindicators, SBD Dauntless, PBY Catalinas, P-36 Mohawks, some P-40s and B-17s. Those were the planes operative in the Hawaii area in 1941-1942, and the ones that saw combat at Pearl Harbor and Midway. The very firsts TBF Avengers saw their first battle at Midway. Hellcats and Corsairs became operative much later, when the front had moved far away from Hawaii. Microsoft should avoid an attempt to retrofit a "theme" to its basic warbirds, because there's not a real one. Just say "those are the airplanes we liked to do". LDS
May 4, 201214 yr Doubt the next DLC will be a 109. From the first paragraph on their site (about the P-40): "With the release of the P-40, the penultimate release in Microsoft Flight’s warbirds in Hawaii theme, here’s a quick look at how each of our DLC plane releases fits into Hawaii’s rich history of military aviation." Were there 109's in Hawaii? jake JAKE EYREIt's a small step from the sublime to the ridiculous...Napoleon Bonaparte
May 4, 201214 yr Thats awesome having family with such a strong aviation background. Unfortunately, much of that history has been lost. I salvage what history I can but, due to the '73 Military Personnel Records Center fire and poor family archiving, I know little besides what I can remember from childhood. Robert S. Dunn Senior's naval career is interesting but it's a subject for another forum (somewhere). Relevant to your topic and thread, Mr. razorhog703, I'd buy the F4U Corsair for personal sentimental reasons, VC or not. I'd buy the F4F Wildcat for similar reasons as the Wildcat was the first carrier aircraft flown by my Dad before the arrival of the Corsair. I'd consider the F6F Hellcat for it's similarity in appearance to the Wildcat altho my father flew the Hellcat very little. I bought the Mitsubishi before the Warhawk was introduced because I had some unredeemable change in my GFWL account and therefore the A6M2 was only five U.S. bucks extra. I was looking for more agility than the Mustang, which I think flies much better in FSX. I wouldn't mind a wartime livery for the P-51 if that's the theme were exploring here in Hawaii. I passed on the P-40. It has no history for me nor a functional cockpit. I'm spending much more time simming in general thanks to MS Flight renewing my interest. I'm following Prepar3D with DirectX 11 support with high hopes. I'm still tweaking X-plane 9 and learning X-plane 10 demo. Thank you for your comment. I've been dying to share with someone who might care that scan of a crumbling 1940's newspaper featuring Dad and his mates in front of that big Corsair engine for a long time. It's the only relevant photo of that era I've got.
May 4, 201214 yr If you are really aching to fly WWII war birds, the CFS "IL-2 1946" is an excellent and inexpensive sim which has several aircraft out-of-box (check it out at amazon, super cheap!). Not only can you fly them, but the armaments are functional and accurately modelled along with nice damage modelling of those target aircraft (which can easily be yourself). The "hyperlobby" app is an online portal to IL-2 public servers, which is also highly recommended. The only downside of IL-2 is its graphics are primitive by todays standards (but definately adequate), but once in combat that's the last thing you are concerned about. BTW, if you never done a CFS expect a huge learning curve to get the gunnery down, for IL-2 models its realism decently well. Carrier take-offs and landing are modelled as well; works fine on Win7 too if you don't load it in the default "program files" directory. And finally, stay completely away from the "Cliff of Dover" release; it is amazingly awful and never should have been released! May 4, 201214 yr Robert, you have the same big smile in your avatar as your dad in the picture! Looks like he was a fun guy! Best regards. Luis Hot, humid Caribbean paradise!

May 4, 201214 yr Informative, but how does the P-51 fit into Hawaii theme? Not arguing, just a question. "The 15th Fighter Group was re-equipped after the Pearl Harbor attack and remained in Hawaii as part of the Hawaiian Defense Force, although rotated squadrons to the Central Pacific attached to Thirteenth Air Force groups. In April 1944, received P-51 Mustang fighters and trained for long-range bomber escort missions. The group deployed to Iwo Jima in February 1945. Was reassigned to Twentieth Air Force for the remainder of the war, returning to Hawaii and Seventh Air Force in November 1945."
May 4, 201214 yr Robert, you have the same big smile in your avatar as your dad in the picture! You kind people make it difficult to stay on thread topic. Thank you for your comment, Mr. Tirado. Dad was a U.S. Naval aviator above ALL else. His last duty station, command of a Naval Reserve squadron at Andrews AFB ended his flying career. He proceeded to drink himself to death within 2 years at age 47 because of his loss of flight status. I have warmest respects and love for his memory. I felt the avatar represented my image and personallity and I use that image whenever I need an avatar on the net. It's actually a caracature of Ted Turner of CNN, America's Cup yachting and Atlanta Braves baseball fame, whom I closely resemble and I "borrowed" it. If you are really aching to fly WWII war birds, the CFS "IL-2 1946" is an excellent and inexpensive sim Thanks for the reccomendation to us all, Rod O. I, for one, will look into CFS's sim.
