May 3, 201214 yr Hello, I just received my new Dell 30" monitor and I have been just extremely impressed by how much detail I have been missing. My system specs are as follows: Mobo: MSI Big Bang CPU: I7 960 3.2 stock clock RAM:6 Gig of 1600mhz 7 7 7 24 Triple Channel GPU:EGVA SSC 570 GTX PSU: Corsair 1000HX SSD: 1 Corsair 3 Performance 120 Gigs for the OS and Add-ons and programs. HD 2: 1 74.Gb raptor for all my Documents and other games HD 3: 1 300 Velociraptor for FSX HD 4: 1 1TB Seagate Storage/ Movies/ Music/ Photos HD 5: 1 2TB Seagate barracuda for Full Back up. OS : Windows 7 64 Bit Home Premium Monitor: Dell 30” Ultrasharp U3011 2560X1600 Speakers: Creative THX 5.1 System I am hoping someone with similar specs can help me make some adjustments to achieve the best possible FPS in FSX. I was running very smooth with the 24” monitor with several add-ons( NGX/KLAX/AS2012/UT2/GSX) . I am still running smooth but I have noticed I am getting lots of gray textures, which is more than likely due to the high resolution. Does this mean I need to possibly upgrade my GPU? If so what would be best? I can also OC my CPU to 4.0 I just need to upgrade my cooler. For all those of you with really nice systems, if you are not using a decent monitor you are wasting your computers performance. Dell offers 3 ultrasharp monitor sizes (24”, 27” and 30”) all are a bit more expensive but the picture quality cannot be compared. To me it was like going from VHS to DVD. Thanks in advance. Edgar Edgar Corripio
May 3, 201214 yr Hi Edgar, leave the GPU, it is an excellent card and more than adequate to run with hi end rigs! If you look at my specs you'll notice I too have the 30" Dell Ultrasharp, and you are right, it is simply a stunning monitor. I am very confused about the grey textures you say you are having, it certainly is not down to anything with the rig. Sure, to be honest, to get the best you should OC your i7, but of course that has nothing to do with your current problem. I suspect you have simply not set the monitor up correctly. If you go into the menu you will find that there is a host of different options. I suggest you read the manual and try some of the different presets. BTW, between you and me, you're right, fellas who haven't experienced these monitors don't know what they're missing. Let us know how you get on. May 3, 201214 yr Author Howard, Thanks for the response! Yeap I was bit ify about speding the money on this monitor. I was actually going to upgrade my computer but to be honest it runs every thing really well as it is. So the next best upgrade was the monitor and Boy!!! I am so angry I did not do this sooner. The problem I am having is when I change camera views some textures (UT2 Ai aircraft and some areas of the Cockpit) stay gray for a bit. I have my system set up as per Nick's instructions over at flight1. I also have the Highmemfix hack in the cfg. I have no problem if I stay in the Cockpit view the whole time but it is so hard not to look around. What addons do you run on your system? I am going to order a good water cooling kit for my CPU so hopefully that will help a bit. I honestly feel like a little kid with a new toy with this monitor. Best Regards Edgar Edgar Corripio
May 3, 201214 yr Edgar I had a problem with gray when I switched from an ASUS 24 LCD to a ASUS 27 LED monitor. I changed from the normal mode to theater mode and everything seems to be okay. This affected not only FSX but all other programs also. The desktop background I use is black and it back to black now not black with a very slight hint of gray. Michael Cubine Michael Cubine
May 3, 201214 yr "I am going to order a good water cooling kit" Best thing you can do is to get a water cooler smart idea best thing I ever did easy to install get the corsair h70 at least also leave the thermal paste that comes with it on it dont mess with it, good luck I have 27" dell ultra but spent to much to upgrade right now 30" huge money. Are you saying there is a delay in texture loading? If so, then this would certainly make sense. Running the 30" ultrasharp will take more guts than running any other monitor, simply because of the higher resolution. Running your rig at 3.2 does not help, and if you combine this with perhaps not a fully utilised cfg then this will account for delayed texture loading, if indeed that is what you are suggesting. May 3, 201214 yr That stock clock is killing you, need to get water on it and overclock it, even a small amount makes a big difference in how fsx will react true story. Rich Sennett
May 3, 201214 yr Author Thank you all for the good responses! Yes, Howard. My problem is that the textures are taking longer to load it seems. I did try the other monitor mods but I left it at standard since it was the one with the most use i think. I might give the game mod a try tonight and since how that goes. I beleive my Cfg is well configured but I guess I can change some other values in certain areas. Like lowering some autogen just to see if I get any improvement. Rich, your 27" Ultrasharp Dell is still an excellent monitor!!! The difference in the cockpit lights is incredible! When compared to my old 24" LG LCD. I guess I will experiment a bit this weekend and order the cooling kit. I am looking at the XSCP cooling kit which is a bit more than the Corsair 110 but I think having a reservoir helps alot. Again Thanks alot guys. Sincerely Edgar I will post any changes, if any after my testing this weekend. Edgar Corripio
May 3, 201214 yr Edgar, what are your slider settings in FSX? What scenery and aircraft are you using when you notice this problem? Also, it would be helpful if you posted your cfg. As Rich has said, you really need to OC that CPU, but thta doesn't mean you can't optimize what you already have. May 3, 201214 yr Amazingly if you dont mind spending a little money get fsx booster4 for windows 7 it works great, you could delete your fsx cfg. file then startup fsx and build a new one run booster first I find its working very nice for me have fps at 30 set in fsx menu but have not played with it yet, was using Bojotes tweaked cfg file and frame limiter which was nice but booster seems just great without any tweaking yet, I stress yet I have to get to that but right out of the box I was impressed and I have most addons running with no problems, might help. May 4, 201214 yr You can get the i7 over 4 ghz easy with a good air cooler. I'm running my 920 at 3.8 on a stock intel fan...
May 4, 201214 yr Hi Edgar yes its an amazing program, I would feel more comfortable with the water on that cpu before you oc, no dis respect dreadnought but you could run into some weird problems to be sure water it down lol, Edgar save that cfg file for safe keeping just in case ---- CLOUD_COVERAGE_DENSITY=8 ---- change that 8 to a 12 you wont believe what your clouds will look like after that, good luck, any questions just ask. fyi I wouldnt try running another monitor on that card with that big monitor I have a gtx580 and 2nd monitor for a mapping program and did notice some wave type effect on my 27" while panning the outside view which I cant live with so I will hold off on 2nd monitor for now tried it with 24" and 17 " same thing so not into pushing it, also you should get afterburner to max out your gpu fan speed while in fsx then turn it back down after your done in sim. May 4, 201214 yr Commercial Member I'd start by wiping out your FSX.cfg, generating a new clean one and then running it through the ******* Altuve tool ( http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html ). The gray model when switching views for a few seconds is normal though - I get that myself at 1920x1200. It's just the textures all loading back in - when you're in spot view for a while it unloads all the VC stuff. The textures used in the NGX are larger than the FSX engine was intended to support and it's probably not as efficient as more modern games are at loading them in. The GTX570 is probably fine for FSX at the high resolution of the 30" display because FSX isn't hugely GPU dependent, but if you're going to play other games, you probably want to look into a new 680 I'd think... From what I've gathered in reviews over the last few years, the 570 maxes out in GPU intensive games at 1920... May 4, 201214 yr Some good advice there Edgar. However, after rebuilding your cfg. you need to add the HIGHMEMFIX, as this is essential and not a tweak but a value that addresses a known FSX graphical issue. I would also recommend you run your TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD at 1024, I think this is default anyway. Also, carrying on from what Ryan said, if your texture loading delay is particularly apparent with the NGX, then I suggest you go to the performance options panel and run the aircraft with lower res textures. I have tried this and it can make a big difference. You only need to choose one of the options, you'll just have to do some experimenting. I would suggest, once you have your vanilla cfg you try a single tweak, nothing else for the time being, and that is the BUFFERPOOLS tweak, which I notice is absent in your cfg. This single tweak can produce a huge increase in performance, again you will have to do some experimenting to find the best value. It may or may not work but could offer an overall improvement. BTW, if you look at my rig in my signature, I run all my NGX flights at normal autogen with 30% AI using MTXpro!
