Qantas and the Boeing 777

Featured Replies

You must have access to Qantas' bank accounts yeah?

They havent been around for 80 (or is it 90) years by just guessing and flying un-profitable routes

How about you ring Qantas and tell them they have been doing it wrong this whole time and should just purely operate 777's

I contend that you are incorrect. Passengers prefer a good connection rather than staying on the same plane. Not everyone going to Europe is heading to EGLL.

But there are many who do fly to Europe who would prefer to fly direct to EGLL, LFPG, or some other major hub airport and connect from there with 737's A320's or even by rail and car vs having to stop in I don't know, lets say Tokyo or Singapore. Also if they do consistently fill 747's and A380's (the one aircraft so adored by passengers that it spurred Airbus's love at first flight PR campaign) on many long hauls then it does make sense to have the higher capacity aircraft serving those routes.

Yes all legacy US airlines have gone through bankruptcy (and they operate T7's) but sometimes you have to reorganize and often its from mismanagement that does not involve fleet and labor, its funny how here in the US management in most companies always tries to pin things on labor but you know what a ramp guy shouldn't be earning below $20/hr if he has been with the airline for over 25 years and has a family to support.

Qantas seeking alliance with Emirates:

Qantas crisis talks as share price falls

Geoffrey Thomas, Aviation Editor, The West AustralianUpdated June 9, 2012, 5:03 pm

Qantas is in secret crisis talks with arch rival Emirates and other airlines about the possibility of a comprehensive alliance or an equity tie-up after its share price plunged below the psychological barrier of $1 to close at 97¢ last night.

The talks come after a horror week for the Flying Kangaroo, which announced on Tuesday it was likely to post its first loss since privatisation in 1995, with its international division haemorrhaging $450 million.

Qantas’ retail and institutional shareholders, who have not had a dividend in four years, dumped the stock after the loss warning, wiping 25.3 per cent off the value of the airline up to Thursday’s close.

The slide continued yesterday, with a further 8.5 per cent plunge after rating agency Standard & Poor’s rerated Qantas’ investment-grade rating as at risk with a 90-day credit watch.

CBA Equities transport analyst Matt Crowe said aside from a deal with Emirates, Qantas “may be forced to sell off non-core (assets, cut more routes or reduce its fleet” to maintain its investment-grade credit rating.

“Yesterday was the strongest volume of shares traded in two years (92 million) and the market is concerned with Qantas’ credit rating and its negative implications,” Mr Crowe said.

Qantas has talked to Air New Zealand and Singapore Airlines.

A Qantas spokesman said: “At any one time we’re in discussions with other airlines. We don’t comment on speculation.”

Chairman of the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation, Peter Harbison, said Qantas needed the Emirates deal urgently.Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce has been battling a raft of bad decisions by previous management and increased competition from low-cost airlines with modern, superior fleets.

Many go to places in and around Italy, Greece etc. And these passengers are starved of connecting flights

Very true!!

Great read Greg. I have the same situation too. I wanted 1 stop to Manchester but only emirates do that (at 3x the price too). QANTAS just don't seem bothered with Perth, so much that they don't even have a lounge at the international terminal, unlike Singapore, emirates and virgin (through the use of singapores lounge).

I don't see QANTAS adding anymore flights out of Perth for a while and instead international airlines and Virgin will continue to grow from here. Maybe if they had got the 777-200LR on a Perth - London route non-stop, there international department wouldn't be in the negatives.

You cannot have a 777-200LR on a YPPH-EGLL route and be profitable.

Firstly it needs to be less than half loaded to actually be able to get to EGLL.

Secondly with that in mind they are not going to fill the seats to make it profitable.

Take a look at how other airlines operate. The US 15 times the population of Australia yet from Miami they ONLY have a 757 heading to Colombia. Not a 777!

777-200LRs are not suitable for QANTAS. The A330 is. Why? What type of aircraft is being flown into Australia by International airlines? The A330. The 777-200LR is extremely expensive compared to the A330. QANTAS buying the A380 was a big mistake. It is costing them now.

I don't think you realize how much English people live in Perth, so comparing Perth to Miami makes no sence at all. Also, many airlines have connecting flights to england out of Perth daily so how QANAS can't they capitalize on the market share that exists on this route.

I think I do realize how many English people live in Perth. In fact, the English community in Perth is probably the highest outside of Britain.

And no, QANTAS cannot compete. I have already explained(read posts above). If they could they would have.

Why does Qantas fly to Dallas? I saw an ad last night showing this route, but I don't think it would be that popular. They also fly to Brisbane. However, here in Houston, not a single flight to Australia. What equipment do they use on KDFW-YSSY/YBBN?

They use the 744ER and they do it for the connection opportunities at their Oneworld partner's fortress hub in DFW, that being AA. The eastbound is non-stop between SYD and DFW, however the 744ER can't make DFW-SYD nonstop on the westbound so they have to stop in Brisbane. Obviously, stopping in Brisbane makes more sense than stopping somewhere like HNL because you then allow your non-Sydney bound passengers to be able to make a connection thus having a one stop connection for them as opposed to stopping in HNL and then continuing on to SYD where they would still have to make a connection to their final destination.

Ahhh, thanks Paul.

What about A380s? Since Daniel said they made this huge mistake in ordering them, why don't they go ahead and use them on this route? I have no idea what Qantas is doing here.

I think this went from an open discussion to a closed one.

The 777LR might be too big for the route from PER to LHR, but the 787 would be ideal.

With 777s QF could open up new routes to the US or Asia, while still flying the A330.

and Daniel while I admire your knowledge of the field, I think you should calm down a bit... Secondly yeah many flies the A330 into Australia, but honestly many flies the 777 also and even the A380(With Malaysian coming soon also).

Thirdly the routes form LHR and LAX gulp up a lot of premium seats, and I don't see the demand for those in much of the discussion in this thread

Yes, this is true, Geoffrey Thomas states that QANTAS is in pain because they should have 35 units of the 787 by now...... listen below.

Air Austral has had to pull out of Australia. So that is one less 777 coming in. Cathay flies the A330 into YSSY (in fact everywhere in Australia except Xmas time which sometimes they use an A340). As far as I know only Thai flies its 777s downunder.

Only Virgin Australia and Emirates operate the 777-300ER in and out of Australia now. Maybe Qatar. Who else?

And Air New Zealand. The 777-300ER that comes from LHR-LAX to AKL, then fly's to either Brisbane or Syd I think. Then returns to AKL to take up NZ2 to LAX

Royal Brunei Boeing 777-200ER. Brunei - Melbourne and back. They used to fly to Auckland.

Delta use the 777-200LR to fly into Sydney I think.
