Sids stars and ATC

Featured Replies

FSX ATC will always vector me out even if I provide a sid flight plan. Is this procedure reflective of a real world environment? so in the above case in FSX I should follow the vector and resume my flight plan once I am told to use my own navigation?

The default ATC included in FSX is less then desirable. It won't recognize sids or stars. If your looking for a more real ATC scenario, I would recommend taking a look at either Vatsim, IVAO, or Radar Contact.

Vatsim and IVAO are both free network environments were you can connect as a pilot and talk to trained controllers. Alternatively, Radar Contact is a separate ATC program that is much more up to date with current ATC procedures, Sids, Stars, etc.

thanks champ. Ive read up on vatism I just wished they had a trainee section with green controllers and pilots.

Radar contact looks interesting will check it out.

Both vatsim and ivao have a official ''flight school'' and lots of ''private'' schools. My personal opinion is that vatsim is quite more professional, but on ivao (they're also professional, don't worry) they're a bit more like a ''family'', especially here in the italian division. I'd suggest to use ivao if you fly in europe, vatsim in the usa

IVAO is the way to go when you fly Europe. Each country has a training division.

Forget about FSX ATC, it's crap.

If you don't want to fly online, it's better to fly procedural: SID, route, STAR, approach chart.

I fly in the EU and UK with Vatsim and it's awesome, as for IVAO I haven't tried it.

Speaking of IVAO, is there one of those live maps that shows you how much ATC and Traffic is online like Vatsim has? (not to hijack this thread)

Before Vatsim I used RC4 and that is good also, but once you switch to Vatsim I have found you can't go back to anything else lol The realism is just unbelievable!

Kind Regards,

I agree, vatsim is awesome in Europe, and some of the areas in northern europe (scandinavia++) are infact better staffed and trafficed in vatsim than in ivao - its not like eu-vatsim = dead or anything.

You can get online traffic info for ivao through a tool called Dolomynum http://www.dlmn.net/dl.html

EDIT: Looks like Dolomynum has been removed from its website. You can get a copy of it from avsims library -> http://library.avsim.net/search.php?SearchTerm=dolomynum&CatID=root&Go=Search

Danny, for viewing ivao online traffic and atc, go to webeye.ivao.aero

That's a very simple tool, if you're registered you can use ivae which is like vatspy

If you use FSX ATC, you will need to build custom flights for it to recognize SIDS/STARS.

I use Simroutes for that. Works pretty well, but you will still be given vectors on the approach.

But I consider that fairly realistic, so doesn't bother me too much.

I never have any trouble with the departures.

I have lots of routes saved from Flightaware, and a Simroutes "flight" to match every one of

them I run.

BTW.. When saving a flight using Simroutes, the cruise altitude will be set to 000, and

you will have to edit your cruise altitude to whatever you want. Never use FSX for this, or

it will ruin the whole plan, and do the usual FSX route. You have to edit the cruise alt using

a text editor.

Even if you include the STAR waypoints in the flightplan it will still vector you way far out from the airport - no way around this, just how it works. Get Radar Contact or use online ATC if you want something better.
