I finally beat the Gold on the Maule Landing Challenge 4!! Probably tried a hundred times and it's all buggy as hell, but I did it!

That totally didn't look like it was going to be a soft landing at first. It looked like it calculated all your scores quick too before half your Maule disappeared into the ground!

Great job! Congratulations!!!!

That one gave me lots of headaches too. I was just about to give up on it and got it.

Touching down tail-wheel first is not really advisable, unless you like snapping it off. That's one of the reasons I don't do the landing challenges... they give you high scores for doing things very wrong. :pardon:

Some of the landing challenges are really bizarre. I don't know whether it is me or not, but the very dark lighting in some of them makes it almost impossible to see the runway unless you are right on top of it. The rule of making a good safe landing is a good approach, and a couple that I have tried, from the starting position they give you, it's almost impossible to make a good approach, unless you circle around a bit, but if it is so dark you can't see the runway from any distance, that this is difficult too.

Well done Todd. Didn`t look like a Gold landing though. As RoboRay said, tail wheel first is not advisable. But if it gets you Gold - HOORAY!

As a real-world pilot, I am very familiar with proper landing procedures - problem is that this particular challenge is so bugged that doing it right simply does not work! The correct way to do this landing would be to land uphill at the beginning of the runway, main wheels first with a close-to-three-pointer attitude. I have tried this countless times. It either does not register or I don't even get enough points for a Bronze. The way I demonstrated in the video is the ONLY reliable way to get anything close to the points needed for Gold. Landing it stalled with the tail first tends to give a better chance of not jumping the crest of the hill as you go downhill while still keeping high enough "soft landing" points, even though you can land MUCH gentler and get 0 points for it (which just confirms the bugginess of this challenge). Like Bobsk8 said, a lot of challenges require other-than-normal procedures that would not really be done in real life. But that's part of the fun of the game/sim (whatever you wanna call it).

Nah no worries - that definitely a very video-gamey landing haha. Certainly not how I land in real life. Although in real life they often feel worse than that :Hypnotized:

I noticed that you landed with idle power which contributes to the difficulty in putting it down on a steep up hill.

 

I would recommend carrying a lot of power right up into touch down. Basically slow fly the plane right onto the runway and transition to a more level attitude prior to the tail wheel touching. while my throttle input was dynamic, I would ballpark it around 40% throttle right up to the last seconds.

 

using full flaps you will need to be very careful with your attitude and height judgment to make sure you don't fall onto the runway.

 

 

I noticed a some of you critiquing me on my landing technique... not to be rude but honestly, I'd love to see someone do a "proper" or "correct" touchdown and get a Gold score... this was purely for the objective of getting the Gold award, which was the last award I needed to have all the Golds. I tried every possible way, and this was the ONLY way to get a good, consistent touchdown and a consistent high score. Then it was just a matter of doing it again and again until I happened to get a high enough score. So like I said, I truly would love to see someone do a properly done landing on this glitched challenge and obtain the Gold.
